SpartacusWP (スパルタクスWP, Suparutakusu?), Class Name Berserker of "Red" (“赤”のバーサーカー, "Aka" no Bāsākā?), is the Berserker-class Servant of Deimlet Pentel of the Red Faction in the Great Holy Grail War of Fate/Apocrypha. Shirou Kotomine assumes command over him before he even meets his Master, but Berserker goes rogue before Shirou enacts his plan to officially become his Master. He is instead forced to contract with Avicebron when captured by the Black Faction.

He is one of the Servants of Ritsuka Fujimaru of the Grand Order conflicts of Fate/Grand Order.

Profile[]

Identity[]

The strongest GladiatorWP and the ringleader who raised a large-scale rebellion of slaves in Ancient RomeWP known as the War of SpartacusWP.[5][6]

A ThracianWP gladiator captured by Romans who became a symbol of rebellion. He was affiliated with a gladiator training camp in the CampaniaWP region, but escaped with seventy-eight of his comrades in 73 B.CWP. He managed to repulse an assault force of nearly three thousand dispatched by the Romans, leading to him being known as a hero who inspired armed uprisings by slaves in many places. His army grew to seven thousand men, and they kept defeating the Roman army without losing a single battle. They were unable to cross the AlpsWP and instead decided to head to the island of SicilyWP. They hired pirates to make the voyage, but were betrayed and attacked by the Roman Legions.[4] He always fought at the head of the front lines, and even when the revolt was subjugated by the army, he fought until his death. Perhaps due to that, Spartacus’ corpse is said to have been torn to pieces and never found anywhere on the battlefield afterwards.[6] It is believed his body was scarred beyond recognition after he fell in that battle.[4]

Being his first and only loss, he remained a shining beacon of hope to the under trodden slaves. His name was carved in history as a hope of the oppressed humans.[5]

Appearance[]

Spartacus is described as "pure muscle", the only words that can truly do him justice.[5] At over two meters tall, those who look upon him will be drawn to his extraordinary mass and find a sense of hopelessness as they look up to try to gauge the height of the giant of a man. He has pale skin covered in innumerable scars to show the immense amount of training and battle it has weathered, and he is covered in leather straps tightly coiling about his body and face. He smiles through all of it, as if enjoying the act and asking if "is this all that constricts me?" He can be considered very frightening when his scar-riddled face remains composed and smiling regardless of whether he is being struck or striking his opponent.[4] His whole body gives of a feeling of someone out of the ordinary.[5]

Personality[]

Spartacus hated all oppressors in life, and he fought the masters to protect the weak, care for them, and heal them. His will to fight was set aflame by those with power, and more than anything, fought them to stand in defiance. He never questions his faith that it is a strength of humanity to endure anything. He only ever acts according to one single thought: "to revolt against the oppressor and to protect the oppressed." Following the most virtuous option, he will choose the path of suffering. He will not strike an enemy in numerical inferiority, and he will only fight back against an enemy stronger than him. He strikes back after stopping the enemy's attack, and turns the tables to grasp victory only at the last minute.[4]

Fate apocrypha spartacus shirou

Spartacus and Shirou.

Having been summoned as a Berserker, Spartacus is always thinking of only "rebellion". Because of that, it is widely said that he is a Servant who wouldn't hesitate to kill his own Master and whose "defeat is certain from the moment he is summoned" among the regular subspecies Holy Grail Wars.[6] For the moment, he will probably stay obedient to his Master.[5] He is capable of judging whether his Master is an “oppressor” or not.[6] However, if the Master shows an attitude that is even a little "Master-like", he will unmistakably attempt a mutiny on the spot while on high spirits. As the binding of the Command Spells also does not have much effect on him, he will become an extremely troublesome opponent.[5] The problem is that pretty much all the Masters who participate in the subspecies Holy Grail Wars are magi in the first place, and they are categorized as oppressors in the eyes of Spartacus. If his Master was someone who "accidently got involved in the war", it would be fully possible for Spartacus to fight at their side right until their defeat. He is particularly compatible with Shirou Emiya, as Shirou's battle is always against those above him and against himself. But it is another matter entirely whether or not they would be able to achieve victory in the Holy Grail War.[6]

Spartacus appears to have normal thoughts at a first glance. Due to his unique rank of Mad Enhancement, he can fluently talk on a highly advanced dialect.[5] He can speak things like "Those who are bound are strong! For until the time when they are set free, anger and sadness will continue to be accumulated", but he cannot actually communicate on an even level with others. Always fixated with thoughts of "always making the most difficult choices", he cannot be controlled and never listens to others. It is impossible to come to a mutual understanding of intentions with him due to this.[1][4][5][6] Rather than disobeying commands, he cannot truly understand them in the first place. Although he can recognize others and converse, it is only in the context that his current course of action is the correct one. He identifies that the Red Faction Servants are not enemies, while painting the Black Faction as his sought out oppressors. He will not even consider strategy, putting off any such suggestions as foolish and even very likely turn his anger on any Red Servant attempting to forcibly stop his march.

He is entranced by battle, showing a wide grin as he strikes his opponents and takes their blows from start to finish. Rider of Black describes him as someone born to fight and kill, not enhanced by the Berserker class, but rather unfit for any other from the start. Rather than showing any such measure of sanity as anger against his enemies, he fights, kills, and crushes all with an expression of ecstasy that is nightmarish to his opponents. This unnerves both his opponents and onlookers, even causing those with diluted emotions to become infected by his madness and flee. The constant smile during his battle leaves both Archer of Red and Lancer of Red with a chill down their spines. Even Rider, who had no fear in facing giants and rampaging beasts in life, is frightened by his smile, showing that one is greatly confident or no longer cares about which side has the upper hand in his insanity. The only thing able to change his expression is the idea of being enslaved, turning his smile into an expression of murderous rage. As despair itself, it is a fate worse than death.

He has no motive to seek the Holy Grail; his dearest wish is just to proceed to fields of battle. For him, who only aspires to rescue the oppressed and rebel against the oppressor, the battlefield is a place where there is only the weak and the strong and also a place full of the everlasting pain and trials that he desires.[4] He can be said to be a fool, but not delusional in his madness. As he reaches the head of his oppressors, joy and glory follow after the clouds of battle clear and the suffering ends. With "absolutely perfect" logic with no flaws, he has forgotten the fact that all that awaited his own suffering was a cruel and tragic death. His will to keep moving forward in the face of all logic goes beyond "hatred" and "conviction", but, in spite of his madness, has carved an unbreakable resolve onto his own heart. Lancer of Black describes his rebellion as the embodiment of his noble spirit, unable to accept that the strong will always trample the weak. Fighting until he has turned the strong into the weak, he does not fight out of altruism for the sake of the weak, but rather for a world where all are equal.

Fate/Apocrypha[]

Beginning Stages of the War[]

Upon being summoned, he is noted to frequently rampage, searching for an "adversary for his rebellion." While they had planned to use him in a more coordinated strike, Caster of Red, "feeling pity" for Berserker, reveals to him the location of Yggdmillennia's headquarters in Trifas. He begins his march straight there despite the Red Faction's arguments, taking the most direct route. Shirou Kotomine decides not to stop him because even a Command Spell would only delay the inevitable. Shirou must follow in his wake to deal with any trouble Berserker causes to the public, and he sends Archer of Red to support him for the moment. As he has no chance of breaking through seven Servants on his own, she attempts to stop him, even though such an action is futile, due to Berserker's rebellious demeanor. Rider of Red also joins her. The Black Faction takes notice, planning to capture the lone Berserker as a pawn for themselves. After the sun sets three hours later, he is impeded by the Black Faction's homunculi and golems, though he destroys all of them with ease.

Berserker encounters Rider of Black and Archer of Black surrounded by half of Yggdmillennia's force of golems. Archer returns to a position on the castle, while Rider engages him. Excited by Rider's declaration, he charges to crush Rider's arrogance, easily forcing Rider back with just the force of the blow gouging the earth. Rider charges at him while wielding the Trap of Argalia, and he seeks to meet it head-on, certain that he will strike Rider down after being pierced. It instead forces his legs to return to spiritual form, dropping him to the ground. With their goal of capturing him, Rider commands the golems to attack and press down on him, but he continues to beat them off him even though each weighs over a ton. Even without his feet and overwhelmed and pressed by the golems, he rips through them and proceeds towards the castle.

He cries out in glee as the golems cover his body, still advancing to find the "oppressors" who will soon be before him. Lancer of Black appears before him and claims to be he who stands atop the "oppressors". Not faltering in the least, Berserker raises his sword arm, but he is pierced by Kazikli Bey and has his movements sealed against his will. Lancer pierces him numerous times while only avoiding a killing blow on his spiritual core, but he still moves forward towards his oppressor. Wishing to ascertain if Berserker is simply a foolish rebel or something more, Lancer concludes that his rebellion is worthy of respect for the first time, but tells Berserker that they will change the direction of his rebellion. Enraged at the prospect of slavery, his smile leaves his face for the first time. Caster of Black causes the golems to fuse together into a stone prison he cannot even escape, and Lancer loses interest after ascertaining that he will become a subordinate.[7]

Battle At Castle Ygddmillennia[]

Caster of Black is eventually able to manipulate Berserker into fighting for their side, though Berserker still remains ignorant and mad, not taking orders from anyone. He participates in the first large battle between the Red and Black Factions, being released to rampage through the Dragon Tooth Warriors of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Berserker stumbles on the battle between Lancer of Black and Lancer of Red and is confronted by Archer of Red, who even uses her Noble Phantasm, Phoebus Catastrophe, to destroy most of his body. Berserker, however, regenerates quickly, beginning to transform into a gigantic monster due to his own Noble Phantasm, Crying Warmonger. Ruler, who has recently arrived on the battlefield, fight Berserker, protecting both Sieg and Rider of Black from him. Berserker's Noble Phantasm eventually reaches its limit, causing him to release all of the damage he has stored in a beam of energy. The attack though is blocked by Ruler's Luminosite Eternelle, although it does cause major damage to the surrounding area. Berserker fades away after this final attack.[8]

Fate/Grand Order[]

Second Singularity: Septem[]

Spartacus is a general in Nero Claudius‘ amy; he is part of the Gaul expedition force alongside Boudica. He meets Ritsuka Fujimaru and Mash Kyrielight when they arrive at the expedition camp with Nero. He seems to take a liking to the pair according to Boudica, though his rebellious speech only confuses them. He also doesn’t consider Nero an ally like Boudica, at least according to her. They both later spare with the pair to test if they’re ready for the upcoming battle.[9] Later, the expedition force begins their battle to retake Gaul from the United Roman Empire. Spartacus and Boudica lead the charge while Ritsuka and Mash go with Nero to the enemy’s main camp and defeat the enemy commander, Julius Caesar. Spartacus nearly goes in the wrong direction until Boudica redirects him.[10]

Spartacus later joins the military march towards the capital of the United Roman Empire, an exact copy of Rome. He is placed in the rearguard with Lu Bu as part of Nero's plan to capture the enemy capital. The rearguard is soon attacked, but Ritsuka and Mash help repel it so the two Berserkers don't chase after stragglers. However, the rearguard suffers another ambush while the vanguard was dealing Darius III and his undead troops. Spartacus and Lu Bu repelled the attack, but they broke away to chase the remnants.[11] They eventually return though in time to join the assault on the enemy capital.[12] However, while rampaging at the palace's entrance, they're annihilated by Altera's Noble Phantasm.[13]

Valentine Event: Chocolate Lady's Commotion[]

Blackbeard calls upon Spartacus to aid him against Ritsuka and William Shakespeare. He calls Valentine's Day the ultimate tyranny and says Spartacus is most motivated on this day. He then triggers a fight by telling Spartacus that Ritsuka is an oppressor. Spartacus is defeated and disappears, telling Ritsuka to keep the tyranny moderate.

Final Singularity: Solomon[]

Spartacus is one of the "Septem" Singularity Servants summoned to aid Chaldea.

Event: Inheritance of Glory[]

Following the conclusion of the Great Holy Grail War, Darnic, still fused with Vlad, remained in the Greater Grail. Stilling wishing to acquire the Grail, he manifested mindless replicas of the war’s participating Servants (except the Rulers) to fight endlessly in a recreation of the war inside a recreation of Trifas. Eventually Spartacus, Atalanta, and Frankenstein attack Yggdmillenia Fortress, where Ritsuka’s party is based at night. They defeated by the group and disappear with the morning light.

Due to Sieg’s influence, Spartacus, Atalanta, and Frankenstein manifest with a sense of self the following morning. When Sieg says his main body, Fafnir, cannot be move for the time being, Sparatcus almost calls it the perfect oppressor. Ritsuka however interrupts to say that’s not the case. Spartacus says he came to fight, and questions who the oppressor is if it’s not Fafnir. He then decides to wait until the oppressor appears, sleeping in the garden to Frankenstein’s annoyance. He later wakes up that same night to join the fight against the replicas of Astolfo, Siegfried, and Mordred approaching the fortress.

The next day, the group is joined by the re-materialized Astolfo, Siegfried, and Mordred. During a meeting in the garden, it is determined that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon serves as the enemy base. The group learn from Avicebron that the Gardens cannot be attacked during the day since the golem he sent there, as per Chiron’s request, was immediately teleported out when night came. Seeing no alternatives, they agree with a frontal assault. As the others pick their respective roles and transports, Spartacus refuses to go with them because he smelled “oppression”. Thus, he will travel to the Gardens through his own method, saying nothing is impossible for him, even if the sky is his obstacle. Sieg tells him that, even as a Servant, he would need a Noble Phantasm or Skill that allows for flight. Spartacus replies nothing is impossible, claiming that if birds can fly, then so can humans. Therefore, he’ll become a bird to reach the Garden, and starts clucking like a chicken. Atalanta tells him he can’t become a bird in a single night as it’s insulting to birds. She then suggests he uses a rope to climb up to the Garden, which he accepts since it isn’t oppression.

The next day before the assault, the group has strawberry sandwiches out in the garden. Spartacus wonders if bread is a sign of oppression. Avicebron points out to him though that eating the insides of the sandwich without the bread oppresses the bread. Later, Spartacus climbs up to Gardens while the others were fighting the replicas. He arrives shortly after they defeated the replicas of Semiramis and Karna. The group recruit them when they gain a sense of will with the coming dawn. They are then guided by Semiramis to where the enemy resides, the Grail’s chamber.

At the Grail’s chamber, the group meets Darnic, the mastermind behind the recreated Great Grail War. Sieg explains how Darnic fused with his Servant, Vlad’s vampiric form via a Command Spell in a desperate bid to retake the Grail. Becoming a monster beyond that of a vampire, Darnic came close to retaking the Grail until Shirou destroyed him. It should have ended since a Servant should revert to pure mana and return to the Greater Grail when they died. However, that never happened because Darnic was human, and also because Darnic had been prolonging life by fusing his soul with that of an infant’s. Because of these factors, Darnic is neither a human nor a Servant, he is merely a being instinctively seeking to grant his wish to acquire the Grail. Sieg tries to convince him to surrender, saying a broken Grail cannot reach the Root nor activate the Third Magic. Darnic refuses and reminds the group that he already controls 87% of the Grail. He declares that as long as he possesses the Grail, none of the group will ever disappear, but they’ll disappear once he’s gone. He then proposes to use the Grail to incarnate them if they agree to join him. However, they all refuse his proposal because of their own principles as heroes. Spartacus merely responses that all oppressors must die. Expecting that to be their answer, Darnic connects to a replica of the Grail that emerges from within the Grail to Sieg’s shock. He then fights the group by having the replica Grail continually spawn replica Servants. The group struggle at first since the replica Grail is using their class affinities against them, so they decide to do the same.

After the replica Grail is destroyed, Darnic refuses to give up when he’s struck by Kazikli Bey from the supposedly sealed Vlad. Unlike the others though, he retains his memories of the Great Grail War due to Darnic fusing with him during it. He eventually convinces Darnic to accept that his broken dream can never be recovered.

After Darnic and Vlad disappeared, Semiramis teleports the group back to the ground. Spartacus declares his duty of stopping the oppressor is finished and disappears saying he’s off to the next oppressed land.

Lostbelt No. 3: SIN[]

Spartacus Meteor

Spartacus stopping a meteor

Spartacus is summoned with Mordred and Jing Ke when another container is launched from Xianyang. He encourages Jing Ke that they need to fight together against Qin Shi Huang. The group then forces Hinako Akuta and Prince of Lanling to retreat when they emerge from the container.[14] They later slay Jotun from the Norse Lostbelt. Spartacus is elated to protect the villagers.[15] While asking about colder areas outside the village, Spartacus and the others are shocked to learn the villagers are forbidden by law to leave. Fortunately, a youth knows of such a place in the nearby forest, and he offers to lead the group there. They then leave while the rest of the Shadow Border crew stay behind.[16]

Spartacus lets the youth ride on his shoulders while the latter leads the group to the nest. He tells him that one can notice different things when looking at the same thing from a different perspective, calling this growth. He confirms Mash’s summarization to the youth that he was saying the youth’s feeling to see outside the village were correct. He then encourages the youth that anyone can become like him if they train themselves, calling life a rebellion against adversity. When the group near a village, Spartacus suggest not passing through to not anger its denizens. They soon smell blood, however, so Spartacus tells the youth to hide while they investigate. They find Kritchat have destroyed the village, then follow their tracks to their nest. Despite Jing Ke’s concerns, the youth goes with them to the nest while Spartacus protects him. The group then enters the cave and finds the Kritchat and Jotun are living together despite their differing biomes. After destroying the nest, the group discovers the monsters cannibalized each other, having been forced to adapt to a new environment. Spartacus expresses his delight that the youth stood his ground despite his fears. They return to the village with the alcohol gland Jing Ke removed from a Dyavol Tron.[16]

Spartacus laments about how uneducated and unknowledgeable the villagers are. While he’ll fight as Ritsuka’s Servant, he tells them to observe the Lostbelt’s denizens to understand they both resist against the collapse of their worlds. Therefore until the time comes to settle matters through battle, he asks Jing Ke to be allowed to continue teaching the villagers poetry.[17] Another container is launched from Xianyang, but Mordred destroys it with Clarent Blood Arthur. However, Xiang Yu emerges from its remnants and attacks the group. He leaves with Langling when the latter comes to retrieve him. Spartacus later notes how Xiang Yu’s eyes were cold and far removed from the carnage of the battlefield, saying they’re truly the eyes of an oppressor. Leonardo da Vinci then reports an army is approaching by vehicle, so the group goes to intercept it. They fight Lanling and Xiang Yu when Qin Liangyu and her army arrive, ordering both sides to stand down. Qin Shi Huang then speaks to them through the vibrations of Mash’s shield after firing a focus magnetic beam at it. He agrees to hand Koyanskaya over if they agree to let him examine the Shadow Border, so the group reluctantly agree. After he examines the Shadow Border, the group realizes the construct at Xianyang is his true form.[18]

Later that night, Spartacus realizes the Lostbelt has the lasting peace that he always sought in life. He therefore asks Mordred if they as Heroic Spirits have the right to be here.[19] Later, he rejects negotiating with Shi Huang, believing it’s a type of battle that oppressors excel at. He believes they should defeat Qin and destroy the Fantasy Tree before Ritsuka and Goredolf succumb to Vitch‘s poison. He is shocked into silence when Mordred, even Jing Ke, agrees with a temporary truce with Qin.[20]

He later leaves the village with several villagers to march towards Xianyang. Eventually they are confronted by Ritsuka, Mordred, and Jing Ke. Spartacus fights them when they see he won’t listen to reason. They fight him when Nezha arrives to report that Liangyu has stolen the Shadow Border. Sherlock gave Nezha the Spirit Origin Graph and had her escape. Spartacus tells Nezha that Qin would’ve destroyed the Border and its crew if she rebelled. Qin Shi Huang then orders Xiang Yu to kill the group after learning they taught the villagers poetry, as he’d rather have them be peacefully ignorant. The group struggle against him when Hinako and Lanling arrive. The two groups fight for a bit when Qin Shi Huang suddenly has Hinako, Lanling, and Xiang Yu retreat. He has launched a payload from the Great Wall towards the group’s current location, and it’ll arrive in three minutes. At his request, Spartacus is empowered by Ritsuka’s Command Spell. He then jumps toward the meteorite and stops it with an overloaded Crying Warmonger. After Mordred catches him, Spartus tells the youth that he’ll never die, as he lives in the hearts of rebels before disappearing. His sacrifice encourages the youth to continue in his stead and the village to wish for Heroes, causing the leyline to connect to the Throne.[21]

Interlude[]

In his interlude Gladiator Circus, Spartacus is captured along with Ritsuka and Mash by Romans that plan to force them to fight as gladiators. After Spartacus takes out their captors, he and Mash defeat the monsters that came to the Roman camp. However, Spartacus is left confused when the Roman soldiers and their campsite disappear, saddened that there are no oppressors to fight. Briefly believing he has gained true freedom, Spartacus quickly realizes that there are more oppressors for him to fight, and tells Ritsuka that they will come with him until all of the oppressors are defeated.

Other appearances[]

In Fate/strange Fake, Francesca considered giving Sigma Spartacus' manacles as a catalyst to summon him. She though decided against it, wanting to see what the Grail would pick for Sigma.[22]

In Type-Moon's April Fools' Day 2015, he is a producer in the Imperial Roma talent agency. His TMitter user account is @tmtt15_spa_P. He goes around trying to recruit idols and eventually gets arrested.

Abilities[]

Since Spartacus unified the rebel army that was just a simple gathering and attained successive victories over the powerful Roman Army, it is thought that his popularity and abilities as a war commander were excellent. But before all that, the main reason why he collected popularity was due being a hero that "always won by reversal", symbolized by his Noble Phantasm. For the soldiers of the rebel army, the more hopeless the progress of battle was, the more certain the victory beyond that became. He himself is not aware of this, but this reversal strategy conforms with the principles of showmanship and made him extraordinarily popular as a gladiator.[4] Taking no measure to avoid attacks and even seeming to leap into their paths, he takes all strikes while only growing more battle-lusted by the second. Attacks coming at him do not bring fear, but rather joy in that the more intense the strike, the deeper the despair it causes him, the more pleasurable his own counterattack will become even should he be run through by the enemy's attack. It is evident that his fists themselves contain quite some power. Shirou Kotomine notes that whether or not Atalanta can stop him may as well be decided by a flip of a coin.[23] In fact, stopping Spartacus calls for two Servants at the very least. Vlad III was able to restrain him with Kazikli Bey.[7]

The leather around his waist and between his legs are not protection in the least and he has nothing covering his pectorals, but it can be said that his flesh is not something meant to be contained within armor. The immensity of his mass makes it unnecessary to protect, shown by the countless scars that make it obvious that not one of those wounds had truly "pierced" him in life. Like taking a paring knife to a ball of metal, his body is a steel mass that may be cut, even drawing blood, but goes no further. With arms the "size of crocodiles" and legs that trudge with the force of mammoths, it is clear that his body's toughness is virtually armor in itself.

Berserker fights with his gladiusWP sword, fists, and grappling techniques, focusing only on his power in which he takes much pride. He proceeds into battle without the need for technique or proper judgement of the situation, allowing him to be thought of as a walking disaster in battle and causing every slash and punch to leave corpses behind him. His strength is great enough to be able to take down a Servant of lesser physical ability with a single strike and blow them back with the force of the swing even if they should avoid it, and he is much more nimble than his appearance would suggest, charging like a raging boar into battle. He throws enemies, cleaves them with his sword in wide, powerful arcs, suplexes multiple enemies at once, and tears his enemies limb from limb.

Skills[]

Class Skills[]

  • Mad Enhancement (EX Rank): Although Spartacus appears at first glance to have a low rank of Mad Enhancement due to his ability to speak, he is actually an irregularity far from the normal understanding of a Berserker. He is an uncontrollable Berserker with ranked-up parameters and loss of most reason.[1][2][4] Even while under Mad Enhancement, Spartacus can normally speak things such as "Those who are bound are strong! For until the time when they are set free, anger and sadness will continue to be accumulated."[4] However, because he is fixated with thoughts of "always making the most difficult choices", he never listens to what people have to say. In practice, it is impossible to come to a mutual understanding of intentions with him. Spartacus is indeed an uncontrollable Berserker.[1][2][4][5] Once he has set his objective, he will not change his mind at all. Even if his Master expends one Command Spell, it will only weigh him down and delay the inevitable.[7][23] In order to stop him, two Command Spells would be required.[7]

Personal Skills[]

  • Honor of Suffering (B Rank): When Spartacus's body takes damage, the Magical Energy cost necessary to heal his injuries with magecraft is reduced to one fourth of how much it would normally take.[1][2][4] Furthermore, even without the use of magecraft, the wound will automatically proceed to be healed after a certain amount of time.[1][2] In truth, the pain inflicted heightens his combat focus, allowing him to tap into his full potential; by corollary, if he is not injured, he cannot fight at full strength. The notion that "one must first conquer the pain inflicted by the enemy to attain absolute victory" is a fundamental premise of Spartacus' tactics.[4]
  • Unyielding Will (A Rank): Spartacus possesses an exceedingly firm will that will never, ever yield against any kind of pain, despair, or situation. In other words, he possesses a resistance against physical and mental damage. However, said resistance does not hold against illusion sorts of attacks induced by others. For example, there would be resistance against damage from “falling to a pitfall”, but there would be none against “an illusion that makes the pitfall looks like the ground”.[2] Although Astolfo was able to cleanly avoid his attacks and destroy one of his legs with Trap of Argalia, Spartacus still dragged himself on to defeat his opponent.[7]

Noble Phantasm[]

Spartacus's Noble Phantasm is Crying Warmonger. A continuously activated type Noble Phantasm that converts all the damage inflicted by the opponent into Magical Energy that is accumulated in his body to boost or heal himself.[1][2][4][5][24] As such, the longer a battle is prolonged, the more advantageous it is for Spartacus.[24] The only way to beat him is to strike him with a mighty Noble Phantasm in a short decisive battle.[7][24] Although Mordred was convinced that she would be able to stop Spartacus from marching to the Chinese Lostbelt's capital by targeting his knees, even with Jing Ke's help, they were unable to subdue him because he kept getting stronger.[21]

Although the servants aiding Chaldea in the Chinese Lostblet would normally not have any way to defend against or destroy something as utterly destructive as Qin Shi Huang's meteor, Spartacus is able to vaporize it thanks to this Noble Phantasm, which changes to match what he’s up against. The more powerful the attack, the stronger Spartacus's counterattack will be. Boosted by a Command Spell ordering him to "Jump", Spartacus destroys the meteor before it hits the ground while having his Spirit Origin completely annihilated in the process.[21]

Against strong Servants and such, if the accumulated magical power is in large quantities, it will ultimately lead to a transformation of the flesh.[1][2][5] During the Great Holy Grail War, perhaps due to his connection to the present world, or his line being complex, the Noble Phantasm’s conversion rate went out of control and turned him into something unbelievable.[24] If he is damaged to the point of being on the verge of death, he'll release an enormous amount of magical energy that will destroy everything before Spartacus' eyes.[4] In Apocrypha, this attack was strong enough to completely destroy a giant fortress with one blow.[2]

Development[]

Creation and Conception[]

Spartacus was created by Gen Urobuchi and designed by Katsuya Terada for the original canceled online game project.[4]

Spartacus was illustrated by Ototsugu Konoe in Fate/Grand Order.

Comment from Illustrator[]

"It’s kinda hard to modify such a cheerful character for the ascension, but do all of you realize his rotund eyes peeking from the dark hole on the mask on his last ascension? Also, all of his differing expressions are based on his smiling face, so it was really hard on me...or so I thought, but it ended up enormously smooth. Also, I’m proud of how sexy his hip is on his initial stage, so you need to check it out!" (Ototsugu Konoe)[2]

    Spartacus
    The Gladiator
He is a Roman gladiator. He never questions his faith that it is a strength of humanity to endure anything. He only ever acts according to one single thought. To revolt against the oppressor, and to protect the oppressed. Following the most virtuous option, he will chose the path of suffering. He will not strike an enemy in numerical inferiority, and he will only fight back an enemy stronger than him. He strikes back after stopping the enemy's attack, and turns the table back to grasp victory only at the last minute. It is very frightening when a scar-riddled face remains composed and smiling regardless of whether you strike him or he strikes you.

    Legend
A ThracianWP gladiator captured by Romans, he was affiliated with a gladiator training camp in the Campania region. But in 73 B.C., he deserted along with 78 companions. The Romans dispatched a troupe of 3,000 men to pursue them, but Spartacus ambushed them. This victory encouraged servants all around to revolt, and the rebel army grew to 7,000 men. Heading North, the rebel army kept defeating the Roman army, but failed to cross the Alps, and headed to the island of Sicily instead, hiring pirates; but the pirates betrayed them, and they were attacked by the Romans. Spartacus died in that battle. It is believed his body was scarred beyond recognition.

    Status

    • STR: A
    • CON: EX
    • AGI: D
    • MGI: E
    • LCK: D
    • Noble Phantasm: C

    Skills

    • The Honor of the Battered

In the instance that Spartacus' injuries are repaired by means of magecraft, the required magical energy cost is quartered. In truth, the pain inflicted heightens his combat focus, allowing him to tap into his full potential; by corollary, if he is not injured, he cannot fight at full strength. The notion that "one must first conquer the pain inflicted by the enemy to attain absolute victory" is a fundamental premise of Spartacus' tactics.

    • Mad Enhancement

Rank-Up parameters, but robs most of reason. Even while under Mad Enhancement, Spartacus can normally speak things such as "Those who are bound are strong! For until the time when they are set free, anger and sadness will continue to be accumulated." However, because he is fixated with thoughts of "always making the most difficult choices", he never listen what people have to say. In practice, it is impossible to come to a mutual understanding of intentions with him. Spartacus is indeed an uncontrollable Berserker.

    Noble Phantasm

    • The Howl of the Wounded Beast

A permanently active-type of Noble Phantasm. It is possible to convert part of the damage inflicted by the enemy into magical energy and accumulate it in the body. The efficiency of this conversion into magical energy raises the more Spartacus physical strength decreases. The magical energy that was accumulated in the body like this can be used to boost Spartacus' abilities. If he is damaged to the point of being on the verge of death, possibly an enormous amount of magical energy enough to destroy everything before Spartacus' eyes will be saved up.

Since he unified the rebel army that was just a simple gathering and attained successive victories over the powerful Roman Army, it is thought that his popularity and abilities as a war commander were excellent. But before all that, the main reason why he collected popularity was due being a hero that "always won by reversal", symbolized by this Noble Phantasm. For the soldiers of the rebel army, the more hopeless the progress of battle was, the more certain the victory beyond that became. He himself is not aware of this, but this reversal strategy conforms with the principles of showmanship and made him extraordinarily popular as a gladiator. He certainly has no motive to seek the Holy Grail; his dearest wish is just to proceed to fields of battle. Because for Spartacus, who only aspires to rescue the oppressed and rebel against the oppressor, the battlefield is a place where there is only the weak and the strong and also a place full of the everlasting pain and trials that he desires.

    Berserker of “Red” [Servant]
One of the Servants of the Red camp. A Servant truly worthy of the title of mad warrior, who completely ignored the plans of the other Servants and Masters and disappeared like a star after merely rampaging around. His true name is Spartacus, the strongest gladiator who raised a large-scale rebellion of slaves in Ancient Rome.
Spartacus was the leader of a revolt and led the other slaves as a skilled leader, but he always fought at the head of the front lines, and even when the revolt was subjugated by the army, he fought until his death. Perhaps due to that, Spartacus’ corpse is said to have been torn to pieces and never found anywhere on the battlefield afterwards.
Having been summoned as a Berserker, Spartacus is always thinking of only “rebellion”. Because of that, it is widely said that he is a Servant who wouldn’t hesitate to kill his own Master and whose “defeat is certain from the moment he is summoned” among the regular subspecies Holy Grail Wars—However, in truth, Spartacus wouldn’t actively revolt against his Master. His Mad Enhancement is EX rank and it is virtually impossible to come to a mutual understanding with him, but he is capable of judging whether his Master is an “oppressor” or not.
…The problem is that pretty much all the Masters who participate in the subspecies Holy Grail Wars are magi in the first place, and they are categorized as oppressors in the eyes of Spartacus.
If his Master was someone who “accidently got involved in the war”, it would be fully possible for Spartacus to fight at their side right until their defeat. Though I will not give names, he is particularly compatible with a certain red-haired boy. His battle is always against those above him and against himself, after all. Of course, it’s another matter entirely whether or not they would be able to achieve victory in the Holy Grail War.
Though the chances of it are low, should Spartacus be summoned as a Saber, even more caution (in terms of rebellion) would be needed against him, demonstrating how troublesome a Servant he is. But he might still have a chance of winning if he was chosen by a child who doesn’t know anything.

The Howl of the Wounded Beast [Noble Phantasm]
Crying Warmonger. The continuously active Noble Phantasm of Berserker of Red, Spartacus. It is the type where his legend itself was sublimated and turned into a Noble Phantasm. There is actually a huge difference in how this Noble Phantasm is used depending on whether he is summoned as a Berserker or a Saber. When he is summoned as a Berserker, it turns the wounds he receives from enemies into prana and accumulates it in his body to boost or heal himself.
However, during the Great Holy Grail War, perhaps due to his connection to the present world—his line being complex, the Noble Phantasm’s conversion rate went out of control and turned him into something unbelievable.
Incidentally, if he was summoned as a Saber, it would have stabilized into the more respectable ability of “restoring his vitality and prana when he successfully endures the enemy’s attacks and also invalidating or reflecting back any more of the same attacks thereafter”. Though this would have been threatening enough on its own.
Either way, the longer a battle is prolonged, the more advantageous it is for Spartacus. The only way to beat him is in a short decisive battle.
