Gameplay

Fate/Extella is an action game similar to other musou games, where the player controls a Servant to fight hordes of enemy programs as they gain control of the map for their respective faction by capturing Sectors. Sectors are the areas of the map that are required to be captured in order to win the game, and each Sector has differing values called Regime Rank with higher values increasing the chances of winning but also the chances of a enemy Servant appearing. Capturing a Sector is done defeating the "Commander" enemy program that controls the Sector and only appears once enough enemy programs are defeated in said Sector. However, there may be times where the player may need to a destroy a enemy reproduction program called a "Plant" to stop new enemies from spawning. Sectors may also be laid with traps but they can countered by Code Casts. The faction that succeeds in capturing a Sector will be closer to completing the Regime Matrix, the mark of victory, though Sectors can be recaptured. Once the player faction has succeeded in completing the Regime Matrix, a boss Servant of the opposing faction will appear to fight and their defeat means victory for the player faction.

Combat involves using combination of light and heavy attacks with each Servant sporting their own unique move set to unleash devastation about enemy forces. By continuously landing hits a special gauge is filled and once filled the Servant can perform a special attacked called Extella Manuever that deals large amounts of damage to groups. Additionally another gauge can be filled to enter an empowered state for a short duration called Moon Drive, which increases their attack, and grants them guard break to break through enemy defenses. Nero and Tamamo no Mae however can enter Moon Crux, which acts the same as Moon Drive but gives them a new moveset. Servants can also be installed with skills before battle that grant them passive bonuses and abilities divided into three types: Red, Blue, and Yellow. Red skills are attack-based skills that can include increasing the power of a Servant's Noble Phantasm, or adding elemental damage to regular attacks. Blue skills are defense-based skills that can include raising a Servant's defense or their resistance to an elemental. Yellow skills are auxiliary-based skills that can include increased item drop rate or movement. Setting skills of the same color next to each other when installing them will increase their effects. Lastly, Servants can collect three Phantasm Circuits to unleash their Noble Phantasm to devastate enemy forces.

Hakuno, while unable to fight directly, can support their Servant by using Code Casts. Code Casts have a variety of effects such as healing or switching to a secondary Servant, which depend on what Mystic Code is being worn. Mystic Codes are pieces of clothing Hakuno can wear that grant them different Code Casts to support their Servant, which be earned in battle, and crafted by using QP (in-game currency) and upgrade parts. Unwanted Mystic Codes can be disassembled to earn some additional QP. Hakuno can also use their Command Spell to further support their Servant by using one to resurrect them, or use all three to restore their health and enhance their abilities for a short period. Outside of battle, Hakuno can talk with their Servant and increase their bond with them depending on what's said. Bond levels can also be increased by completing side missions, which are challenges provided by Servants, such as defeating X number of an enemy. Five challenges can selected before each stage, and completing these challenges will increase the bond level with the Servant that provided the challenge.

Development

The title was first announced through the website Project Cosmos with a countdown timer and a tagline of "A new fate begins to stir." The source codeWP of the website contained Hakuno Kishinami's Command Spell.

The scenario is written by Kinoko Nasu and Hikaru Sakurai, character design is by Arco Wada, and development is by Marvelous. They decided to forgo a title like "EXTRA3" for the work.

XSEED GamesWP announced on 7 June 2016 that they will localize the game in North America as Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star in Winter 2016.[2] A subsequent announcement added a Noble Phantasm Edition LE, while pushing the launch window back to 2017.[3]

A limited number of themed PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita models will be made available from the Sony Store in Japan.[4]

Nintendo announced on 4 April 2017 that the game will be re-released on Nintendo Switch on 20 July 2017 in Japan and 25 July 2017 in North America. In this version, the game is bundled with all DLC costumes for all characters for free, including Nero's Unshackled Bride outfit (the revealing version of Saber Bride outfit) exclusively on Nintendo Switch. Unlike Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita version, Nintendo Switch version of the game allows players to choose four languages--Japanese, English, Traditional Chinese and Korean.
