BritainWP (ブリテン, Buriten?) is the name of an island off the north-western coast of continental Europe. It designates both the island itself, Great BritainWP of the British IslesWP, and serves as an alternative name for the country covering the whole island, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the United KingdomWP for short), which is formed of three constituent regions known as "countries": EnglandWP to the south and east, WalesWP to the west, and ScotlandWP to the north. Britain is the oldest known name for the island.

History[]

According to myth, the descendants of Trojan prince Aeneas eventually settled down on the island, becoming the founders of its first kingdom.[1] Before the island was known as Britain, it was called Albion (アルビオン, Arubion?).[2]

Eventually, after Gaius Julius Caesar's Britannia campaignWP,[3][4] Britain came to find itself integrated into the Roman Empire as a province called Britannia (ブリタニア, Buritania?). Under Emperor Nero Claudius, heavy taxes were levied against the province, and Queen Boudica, seeking revenge for what happened to her and her daughters, rallied the various kings of Britannia and incited a rebellion with her at the head. She gained multiple victories, overwhelming the imperial army, but was eventually defeated by Nero Claudius's army, ending with her death.[5][6]

In the fifth century, Britain started to decline after the Western Roman Empire collapsed on the continent. The empire had been believed to be indestructible, but it was only awaiting its destruction at the hands of invading barbarians. In preparation for the war against the barbarians, Rome deprived her island province of any military forces left there. Once Britannia lost the empire's protection, it could not escape becoming independent, causing it to break into smaller countries soon after.[2]

Foreign forces known as the Saxons invaded the island from across the sea in search of food and land, while the Picts in the north also warred the native Britons. This led to an alliance of the British kings, but one of them, King Vortigern, the incarnation of the white dragon born from Britain in order to one day destroy it, betrayed them, aiming to use the Saxons to fulfill his own desire of unifying Britain. Londinium, the cornerstone of Britain, a fortress city constructed when the Roman Empire once ruled, was reduced to ruins. Uther Pendragon, the greatest of all kings, was defeated by Vortigern in battle and killed. Vortigern granted the Saxons land, and the respite afforded to them temporarily quelled the invasion, but from this day onwards started Britain's Dark Age, where war became an everyday occurrence.[7]

Britain's salvation came in the form of King Arthur. Arthur Pendragon, born between Uther Pendragon and Queen Igraine, a Queen hailing from the rival kingdom, grew up under the guidance of the Magus Merlin, and became the king after pulling out Caliburn, the Sword of Selection, out of its stone. For ten years, Arthur led the famed Knights of the Round Table to achieve innumerable deeds, defeating the Saxons at the Battle of Badon Hill and bringing peace to the land of Britain for ten years.[8] However, Queen Guinevere and the serving knights grew more distant from the king precisely because he was too ideal. In the civil war that raged at the end of his reign, he crossed blade with his very own son, Mordred, at the Battle of Camlann, and was mortally wounded. In legend, the body of King Arthur was transported to Avalon, where he is healing his wounds in peace.[9]

During the Age of ExplorationWP, Britain was considered a second-rate power with no real influence beyond its borders and no colonies of worth overseas. People like Francis Drake, who circumnavigated the globe, paved the way for Britain to become the dominant superpower, giving rise to the British Empire.[10] The United States of America was originally a colony of the British Empire, before it broke off from its parent nation after a Revolutionary War,[11] and expanded across the continent of North America.

Britain was the birthplace of the Industrial RevolutionWP, a series of massive changes in technology and society that spread around the world in the 1800s.[12] These changes caused damage to both the Association and the Holy Church, and led to the current political situation within the Clock Tower.[13]

In the World of Fate/EX, Britain is one of the many nations under the control of the Western European Plutocracy, with the British Royal Family among its most prominent members.[14]

World of Magecraft[]

Because of its status as an island and the "navel of the planet", the Age of Gods came to an end in Britain later than the rest of the Earth, finally disappearing in 500 AD thanks to the actions of King Arthur. The Age of Man is in part anchored to the World by the spear Rhongomyniad wielded by the king[15][8] and currently held by Gray.

When the Age of Gods came to an end, the last remaining dragon in the Isles attempted to dig its way to the Reverse Side of the World, creating the Spiritual Tomb of Albion in the process. The Clock Tower was established on top of the Spiritual Tomb shortly afterwards, drawing Magi from around the world to it for research. As a result, the Clock Tower has been the undisputed center of the World of Magecraft, at least in the Western world, since the Barthomeloi Magus family’s progenitor joined the organization around 1000 AD.[13]

Aylesbury[]

AylesburyWP (アルズベリ, Aruzuberi?) is a countryside village resembling a medieval town with unmatched concrete factories. Though the land was commercially worthless, development funded by V & V Industries (V&Vインダストリィ?) to make a band of factories, even if out of date, has made the village previously in ruin from a declining population into an industrial area.[16] The company is owned Van-Fem of the The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors (Remake), and he has used the area in order to prepare the area for the Aylesbury Valesti ritual.[17] Though both the Mage's Association and Church are monitoring the area, all that has gone into it are legitimate funds and human labor, so they cannot act even if they know it is a farm for the Dead Apostles. So long as that human fairness holds, they cannot act until the supernatural has caused it to collapse.[16]

While there is not a deadlock between all three groups, it can be said there is a careful balance of power. Both the Association and the Church are looking to take over the area on their own without any cooperation, so they are enemies in the conflict. The Association has more firepower than the Church, but Magi are fundamentally the same type of existence as Dead Apostles. They share the same craft, but it can be said the Dead Apostles, who have reached a higher level of the supernatural, have the upper-hand against them. The Church specializes in destroying Vampires and can be considered the Ancestors' worst enemy, so they are vying for the Association to quickly overwhelm the Church.[16]

GlastonburyWP is a town in England where Glastonbury AbbeyWP is located. King Arthur's alleged "tomb" is a site at the Abbey,[18] though it's not really where she was buried. She was actually buried at Blackmore Cemetery.

London[]

LondonWP (ロンドン, Rondon?) is the capital of the United Kingdom. Inhabited by eight million people,[19] the city is crossed by the River ThamesWP flowing through it, with the famous "London BridgeWPs" crossing it, such as the Queen Elizabeth II BridgeWP.[19]

London was originally LondiniumWP (ロンディニウム, Rondiniumu?), a fortress city established by the Roman Empire. Some time after Rome left Britain, Londinium was destroyed in a battle between the kings and brothers Uther Pendragon and Vortigern. Some years following that, King Arthur confronted Vortigern in Londinium's ruins, and after his defeat, built her castle Camelot in the location.[8][20]

In the summer, London is pretty cool, with the highest temperature hardly ever going above 25°C, the average temperature being only around 15°C, and, at night, it is sometimes even necessary to take precautions against the cold.[21] By contrast, the winters are actually not that cold. Though the days are short and the skies are cloudy, thanks to the westerly wind and the warm currents from the Gulf of Mexico, the temperature rarely drops below zero.[22]

London is often called the "City of Fog", partly because it is quite foggy in the winter, but the main reason is its smog. Since the 19th century, the enormous amount of fossil fuels consumed by the Industrial Revolution had given off smoke and soot that had mixed with the city’s natural fog, enclosing the capital in a thick smog that bound one’s vision to only a few meters in front of them.[23] The massive amounts of smoke emitted from steam engines during the Industrial Revolution even became a great social problem, as the sulfurous gases in the smoke got caught in the cold fog, retaining and concentrating into a fog of sulfuric acid.[24] The worst of all was the Great Smog of 1952WP; it is said that the thick mist of sulfur covering London caused over 10,000 deaths.[25]

Various areas of London are internationally well-known. SohoWP, whose name derives from a hunting cry,[26] is such an example, and the ChinatownWP in Soho is one of the largest in the world, with more than a hundred Chinese restaurants.[27] Another is Bermondsey MarketWP, believed by anecdotes to be a place for thieves to sell their goods.[19] An infamously known area of London is the district called WhitechapelWP, in East EndWP, where, in 1888, the infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper murdered and dismembered many prostitutes.[28][29][30][24]

London also has many famous streets, such as Druid StreetWP, where Lord El-Melloi II lives.[19] There is also Saville RowWP, known for its luxury fashion, where Lord El-Melloi II's suits are custom made.[31] For transportation, London is especially well-known for its red double-decker busesWP:[32][33] though the city used to use horse carriages for transport, buses and underground trains took over after they were introduced in the 20th century,[33] with London having had an underground transportation network since the middle of the 19th century.[34] London would introduce bendybusesWP in 2001.[33]

London is home to many famous monuments and locations, like the British MuseumWP, St. Paul's CathedralWP, Fortnum & MasonWP, among others.[32] One example is the figure of Boudica driving her chariot, which has been immortalized as a bronze statue at the Thames Path in the Westminster area.[6] The Tower of LondonWP is one other such spot, one of the most famous tourist attractions in the city. It is a castle overlooking the Thames river, originally built as a fortress, then used as an armory and a bank, before finally becoming a prison for nobles. For that reason, many kings and members of the royalty have been executed here, and many legends were spawned as a result of the regrets and laments of the people.[35] For instance, the tale of how an ancient queen’s ghost haunted it,[35] or how, deep underneath it, the head of an ancient king of Britain named Bran is buried, and it watches over the city.[34] Another story is about how the Tower's crows are the avatar of King Arthur,[35] and watch over London.[34]

The Mage's Association's current headquarters is located in London, called the Clock Tower. More specifically, its location is situated underneath the British Museum,[36][37] with its facilities extending from Regent's ParkWP up until WestminsterWP.[38] Its First Department, Mystile, the main academic building, looks like a normal old university on the outside,[39] while its eleven other departments have their own college townWPs in the districts and suburbs surrounding London (Slur, Rocks Road, etc).[40][41][42][43] The Clock Tower was originally only its headquarters in London, but in the hundreds of years since its establishment, and as it expanded, more facilities were added.[40]

Some affiliated buildings and institutions are known to be located elsewhere in the capital. The Tower of London[36] is still used to hold prisoners like Gazamy,[44] and the Lord of the Faculty of Spiritual Evocation preserves the place so he can use it to replenish his Magical Energy, absorbing the Magical Energy of the dead executed there throughout history.[35] On Charing Cross RoadWP, northeast from London's Chinatown in Soho is one of the four entrances to the Spiritual Tomb of Albion, the giant dragon buried beneath the city and a well of resources and revenues for the Clock Tower.[27]

In the Unlimited Blade Works scenario, Shirou Emiya and Rin Tohsaka move to London to study,[45] while Rin goes alone for a trial in the Heaven's Feel scenario.[46] In Fate/hollow ataraxia, Rin travels to London to prepare for her move there after her graduation, and meets Luviagelita Edelfelt for the first time, birthing their rivalry.[47] A series of events that started with delivering an important essay led to Rin and Luvia falling from the Tower of London. They survived the incident thanks to the intervention of Shirou Emiya (seemingly involving swimming in the cold waters of the River Thames in winter[48]), and in the aftermath received the nickname of Mary of July and Poppins of July.[49]

In Fate/Grand Order, the London Singularity manifests itself in 1888, consuming the city in a mass of fog that steals the Magical Energy of anyone trapped within it.[50]

    Legend
Once up on a time, there was a king in England named Arthur Pendragon. He was the legendary king who staunchly defended the land from the invading Saxons for a long period of time.
The name Arthur, written in the fashion of Romans is “Artorius”. Its feminine form is “Artoria”, which is the true name of Saber.
Artoria was born between Uther Pendragon and a Queen hailed from the rival kingdom. She grew up under the guidance of the True Magician Merlin, and became the king after pulling out the Sword of Selection. Later, she led Lacenlot, Gawain, and other famed knights to achieve innumerable deeds. They engaged the King of Saxons at the Battle of Badon Hill and brought peace to the land of Britain. Because the Scabbard of the Holy Sword stopped her from aging, Artoria continued to reign as the ideal king. It was ironic that Queen Guinevere and the serving knights grew more distant from Artoria precisely because she was too ideal. In the civil war that raged at the end of her reign, she crossed blade with her very own son, Mordred. At that instant, she pledged her service as a Heroic Spirit after death in exchange for striking a pact with the World. The one wish she hoped the Holy Grail could realise was “redo the selection of the king”. In legend, the body of King Arthur was transported to the Fairyland – Avalon, where he is healing his wounds in serenity.

    Tactics
Saber’s ability is maximally unleashed while engaging in an honourable face-to-face single combat. It is a method of battle that is full of chivalric honour, and it is also one that suits Saber's sense of aesthetics. However, this does not mean she dislikes strategising. Because she is also a capable military commander, she tends to loath fabricated strategies that have no concrete basis. She fine-tunes her strategy meticulously. While on the battlefield, she further adapts her actions in response to the ever-changing dynamics of combat. Naturally, Saber despises cowardly actions, strategies or not. For this reason, in the Fourth Holy Grail War, her compatibility with the cool-headed, achieving-his-goal-at-all-cost Master Emiya Kiritsugu was the worst.

    Class Abilities
    Magic Resistance: A
Artoria boasts the highest rank of resistance to magic amongst the Servants. She is capable of completely neutralising grand sorceries involving magic arrays and instant contracts. Even modern magi of the highest level cannot wound her directly with sorcery. Artoria is able to resist an action force onto her powered by one stroke of the Command Spell. Such is the extraordinary rank of Artoria’s Magic Resistance, sufficient to shake the very foundation of the Servant System. If the opponent is someone who attacks with sorcery, Artoria will charge without fear and determine the outcome of the battle with a slash.
Also, as her “Pendragon” name shows, Artoria is the holder of the Element of the Red Dragon, charged with the task of protecting the kingdom. She carries the very magical power of the Dragon. This humongous magical power is also the source of Artoria’s Magic Resistance. Due to the characteristics of Dragon, Artoria has much trouble with existences such as Siegfried, who is associated with tales of “Dragon extermination”. If she is targeted by “Dragon-slaying Sorceries”, it is possible that Magic Resistance will not function to its fullest extent.
In the story, Artoria retained her Magic Resistance of A while having Emiya Shirou and Rin as Masters, regardless the two’s differences in power and characteristics. On the other hand, while having Matou Sakura as her Master, her Magic Resistance decreased to B as a result of Blackening.

    Riding: B
Since “knights” are soldiers who are proficient in mounted warfare, Saber’s rank in Riding is very high. Chariots can be ridden the same way. Motorcycles and automobiles are treated as “modern mounts”, thus a high rank in Riding is also applicable. It is unclear if Riding is applicable to aircrafts. Saber’s Riding was elevated to A while having Emiya Kiritsugu as Master. However, Artoria can ultimately only control normal mounts. She cannot control Pegasi, Griffons, Dragons, and other Magical Beast, Divine Beast Ranked Phantasmal Species. This is due to her Class not being Rider, as well as the fact that she was a King in the Age of Man, thus did not have the fortune of having “Legends of Riding Phantasmal Species”.
Artoria rode a motorcycle in the Fourth Holy Grail War, but did not have the opportunity to demonstrate her Riding ability in the Fifth Holy Grail War. Provided with the appropriate mount, the battles might have developed differently.

    Personal Skills
    Instinct: A
Instinct is the ability to instantly identify “the best personal course of action” during combat. Because this skill allows for the prediction of trajectory, it is possible to avoid attacks from firearms. At rank A, it is essentially in the realm of predicting the future. Through this ability, it is possible to negate the penalties inflicted by visual and auditory interference to a certain extend.
Being able to discern Cú Chulainn’s ultimate technique certainly reflects her skills, but having exceptional Instinct also helped her immensely.

    Mana Burst: A
The ability to reinforce one’s weapon and body through the infusion of magical energy. By reinforcing the ability of the body to a great extend using magical energy, the physically fragile Artoria was able to fight head on with monsters such as Berserker. At rank A, even a stick can become a weapon of great power.
Executing large-scale body reinforcement through Mana Burst is only possible with Artoria’s immense magical power.
(Translator's Note: This is basically analogous to Strengthening/Reinforcement Sorcery.)

    Charisma: B
Artoria possessed high Charisma, and reigned as the king of England. The morale of military forces she commands is extremely high. However, this strong influence is still insufficient to build a vast empire spanning the world, so it remains at rank B (enough to rule a country).
Caption: Artoria, the protector of the British Isles. Even with her Charisma, she could not avert the fall of her kingdom.

    Noble Phantasms
    Invisible Air
    Rank: C
    Type: Anti-Unit
    Range: 1~2
    Maximum Targets: 1 Object

A barrier that renders the blade hidden by entangling it with layers of wind, and altering the light refraction rate. It is closer to a sorcery than a Noble Phantasm. By using this barrier, Artoria can attack without the opponent recognising the sword’s reach and trajectory. Since concealing one’s Noble Phantasm also conceals one’s true identity, Invisible Air was highly effective at the early stages of the Holy Grail War. It also has other advantages such as increasing attack power and accuracy. Entangling the sword with wind and using the wind as the blade enhances the attack power, while having an “invisible weapon” provides an advantage in accuracy. (Translator’s Note: It is probably more “decreasing opponent's evasion” in RPG terms.) Since the advantage of Invisible Air lies in “invisibility”, the accuracy increase will not occur while engaging opponents who possess Eye of the Mind or do not depend on vision.
In the Fourth Holy Grail War, Artoria unleashed the condensed air and used it as a long-range weapon that mauls down groups of enemies --- “The Iron Mallet of the Wind King”.

    Excalibur
    Rank: A++
    Type: Anti-Fortress
    Range: 1~99
    Maximum Targets: 1000 Persons

The greatest and most powerful Noble Phantasm of Artoria (Translator’s Note: Not Avalon?). It is the strongest and most majestic holy sword that symbolises King Arthur. The pinnacle of holy swords. Excalibur was not forged by mankind, but crystallised within the Earth, using the wishes of mankind as the basis. It is one of the ultimate God-forged weapons, a Last Phantasm. Originally cared for by the Faeries of the Planet, it was passed into the hands of King Arthur through the Lady of the Lake.
Excalibur converts the mana of the wielder into light, and as the sword is swung, the light is released from the tip of the blade like a laser beam and destroys everything in its path. Of course, the mana consumption is extreme, thus it cannot be fired consecutively. In the Fourth Holy Grail War, the beastly giant sea monster summoned by Caster was completely incinerated by this Noble Phantasm. Excalibur is classified as an ‘Anti-Fortress Noble Phantasm” due to its magnitude and destructive power.

    Avalon
    Rank: EX
    Type: Bound Field
    Maximum Targets: 1 Person
The sheath of Excalibur, a Noble Phantasm with its origin in the Fairyland Avalon where King Arthur rests. The wielder will heal from any wound, and the aging process will cease. Unleashing the true name of Avalon will deploy a Bound Field that provides the greatest defence. A Noble Phantasm that annuls the interference of True Magic; its existence is equivalent to True Magic.
In legend, losing this sheath casted an ominous shadow onto the life of King Arthur, eventually cascading to the collapse of the kingdom. In modern times, the Einzberns excavated Avalon at Cornwall and passed it into the hands of Emiya Kiritsugu. Afterward, it was planted into the body of Emiya Shirou to save his life, eventually becoming the link that led to his bond with Artoria. In Fate Route, Artoria learned that Shirou was her “sheath”, which led the duo to emerge victorious in the Holy Grail War.

    Kewords

01 - Hunt of the Golden Hind: Golden Stag and the Eventide Tempest
This Noble Phantasm is Rider's ace in the hole and forms the basis of her day-to-day life. With her flagship, The Golden Hind, at the fore, a vast flotilla of smaller craft expand ever outward and exterminates her enemies with overwhelming firepower. Its attributes contain vestiges of not only the fleet that eventually defeated the mighty Spanish Armada, but also of the stories involving the golden stag and the eventide tempest that had spread throughout the whole of Europe.

The eventide tempest is the encapsulation of all storms, from blizzards to cyclones, which manifest in the imagination of men as beasts and soldiers, saviors and monsters. Depending on who is speaking, the leader of these apparitions ranges from a fallen King Arthur to the Norse god Odin to the first murderer of men, Cain. in England, it is believed that Francis Drake rides the endless storm despite the fact that the role assigned to her is usually given to malevolent figures of history and myth.

    02 - Invincible Armada
The name given to the Spanish naval forces during the period of history known as the Age of Discovery.

The Invincible Armada consisted of an estimated 65,000 men serving on more than a hundred large warships, each of which weighed in at over 1,000 tons. Its might was such that it earned Spain the reputation of being "The kingdom on which the sun will never set."

    03 - Logbook
The sailing logs of a renowned explorer who successfully circumnavigated the globe.

The logs themselves are illegible, with pages cracked and flaking. However, it seems that the author of these logs was a ship's captain who made their name as both an adventurer and fleet commander.

    Details

    01 - Character Background
The person who circumnavigated the globe and paved the way for England to become the dominate superpower in the Age of Discovery through its substantial earnings. This person was also the one who was given credit for the virtual destruction of Spain's Invincible Armada, which caused the nation once thought of as "the kingdom on which the sun will never set" to teeter on the edge of collapse.

She is a person who has dedicated her life to hedonistic pursuits and sees no difference between a paragon of virtue and a rogue scoundrel. She revels in all things gaudy, whether they are in war or in her private life, and is content to chase after ephemeral pleasures and leave nothing of worth behind, much like the passing of a raging storm.

She is particularly entranced with treasures of gold and silver, but her true love lies not with enduring treasure, but those treasures that explode like fireworks and then quickly fade away.

As she so often declares, "I chase after gold so that I can scatter it like a storm!"

It is for this reason that she is wholly incompatible with the Hero of Legend that symbolizes "an inexhaustible treasury." She would also be at odds with the fox-eared Caster, as Caster is the epitome of eternity.

As a devoted libertine, all that matters to her is the inevitable crash at the end of it all. A Legendary Spirit who is completely indifferent to the frailty of human existence, she is content to indulge in her own whims and desires until death comes to greet her.

She died of dysentery at the age of 55. Her dying wish was that she be buried in her full armor.

    02 - "Franciscus Draco"
Sir Francis Drake is generally considered the first person to successfully circumnavigate the globe (the first person known to have attempted this feat -- Ferdinand Magellan -- was killed halfway through his voyage).

Though a male in life, Francis Drake has materialized in Fate/EXTRA as a woman.

During the time of Francis Drake, England was considered to be a second-rate power with no real influence beyond its borders and no colonies of worth overseas. It was primarily due to his voyages and successes on the high seas that gave rise to the British Empire. The combination of the wealth he brought to the country and the detailed maps he produced while circumnavigating the globe allowed Britain to assemble a fleet that rivaled that of Spain's.

An oft-mentioned aspect of the Drake mythos is that of his ship, the Golden Hind. Not only was it the flagship of Drake's fleet, it was seen as a symbol of hope and a source of miracles. The exploits the Golden Hind made possible elevated Drake (known and feared by the Spanish as El Draque) to a level on par with King Arthur. Both are said to dwell in Avalon and "across the ocean", the city of the dead, and will eventually return to lead England to true glory.

During what was to be the final confrontation between England and Spain's Invincible Armada, Francis Drake was commissioned as a vice admiral in the English navy. Using an unorthodox strategy involving the use of fire-ships, he forced the Spanish fleet into open water where they could be bombarded with cannon fire.

In addition - and this is merely literary creation - there is also a story full of romance in which Drake was a companion of Queen Elizabeth and, just before setting sail for the world circumnavigation, switched places with the Queen, who could no longer go out in public due to receiving a wound on her face.

    Dan Blackmore [Character]
Dan is a former soldier, and a Master dispatched by England.
He served as a soldier for many years, and was knighted by the Queen. When he was young he made a name for himself as a sniper.
While the Royal Family of England is a part of the West Europe Plutocracy, it opposes the one who holds the power to lead the group, Harwey.
After hearing that Harwey had accessed Moon Cell, and that there was the possibility he might be trying to monopolize it, the Queen sent her most trusted private soldier to the Moon. That soldier is Sir Dan.
Dan comes from an old family, and his body possessed magic circuits. Dan resented his Magus blood, but one cannot refuse a direct request from her Majesty the Queen.
Although close to retirement, he was still a soldier, and thus he could only carry out his duty to the end.
With this, he went through one year of training and adjustment, and he became a spiritron hacker. At the ripe age of 60 he was a late bloomer of a Magus.

What Dan desires from the Holy Grail War is to be able to fight as a “Knight.”
While he has already received the title of Sir, he is a soldier who has crossed many battlefields. He came to lose many things through the battles in his past.
His ideals, his wife, and the life he imagined for himself when he was young. All of it burned away by the fires of war.
After living his life as such, all that he would be rewarded with was the end known as retirement from military service.
Dan greatly desires a clean separation between battle and everything else, and he only wants a clean fight. And now the Holy Grail War has presented itself as his last chance to be able to fight as a Knight.
Dan Blackmore suggests the importance of conviction to the protagonist.
    The old solider speaks:

“Even if you have regrets, you should never use them as an excuse.
I did my best while on the path that I was presented with.
No matter how warped or crooked that path may be,
I continued to represent my own soul.”

Despite killing many a foe, and losing his wife, when Dan takes a weapon in his hands, he is under no illusion. After taking up arms, you must bear responsibility for your actions. This goes for both the enemies you killed, and you who chose this path yourself.
To the protagonist who had not yet discovered the reason and meaning behind fighting, the old soldier compassionately sees him off.
Only at the very end are the mistakes you are responsible for brought into question.
Until then, you have no reason to stand still.
For that is the story of another certain knight I know too well.
To the protagonist whose memories still haven’t returned, and who holds but a vague desire to obtain the Grail, these final words from Dan were like those of a proud father.

[v] Fate/complete material III: World material - Theory of Magic - The two great forces in the Thaumaturgy world: Mage's Association, p.051

“Clock Tower”, the Highest Institute of Magic
The Clock Tower, the core of the Association and in fact what could also be said to be the Association itself, is based in the British museum of London. Magi from all over the world gather and devote themselves day and night to the study of magic, while at the same time, are busily tripping over and being tripped over by other factions and competing for power and budget. The organization is anything but harmonious and has a complicated bizarre structure, but the magical research there is without doubt the leading edge.

Below the building, there is the magi’s research area which includes studies and archives. It is only a venerable museum to normal people of course, but at the deepest part, there is a special area (prison?) called the “Bottom of the Bridge” where the Association confines many sealing designated magi deemed to be “dangerous because their talents were too outstanding.” Also, apparently the Gazamy the “Evil Spook”, treated as the number one disaster in the Association, is locked up at the bottom of the London tower.

The person of highest position in the Clock Tower, the “Director” has been the same person for the 2000 years since the founding of the organization, and because of this is thought to be something more than human.

The organization handling patents relating to magic is also the Clock Tower, and the current finances of the Tohsaka family is being by covered by the patent royalties that are being transferred to their account.

    Ranks of Magi
A magus is given a “rank” that matches his ability. The highest is said to be Crown (Grand), but details on it are unknown. Note that Lord El-melloi II, lecturer at the Clock Tower who has produced many Grands among his pupils, is stuck in the mediocre “fourth rank” for some reason.

    Color ranks
Separate from the normal ranks, color-based titles are given to those that have become special.
The highest are red, blue, and yellow based on the three primary colors. After that, there are the combined colors of orange, purple, green, black, and so on. The further down you go, the less your rank is. Note that there is no rule about only one person for each color. The Association will, without any stinginess, award a color to you if you’re a magus of great stature or one with an unusual talent.

    Sealing Designation Enforcers
If you receive a “sealing designation”, you will be confined and even your magic research will be gone, not to mention your freedom. Thus, the person given that designation will of course desperately resist that and won’t stop fighting. To forcefully retrieve magi who were qualified enough to be given a sealing designation, the Association dispatches “Enforcers.” There are around 30 of them total, and Bazett is one of them.

Lords, consuming their time in power struggles
In the Magic Association, no rather, the Clock Tower, there are a number of families that hold sway. They are called Lords and are the objects of fear. There are three major families of Lords and about 20 families of relatives. These families are well-known even in normal society. The history of one family is at shortest 500 years and the longest is over 2000 years. They have been plotting and plotting since a staggeringly long past.

The Sea of Estray, together with the Atlas Institute, is an organization called the original form of the Magic Association.
Among the founders of the Magic Association, there had been many heretical magi who were exiled from the Sea of Estray and the Atlas Institute and had no place left to go.
The base of the Sea of Estray is in Northern Europe. This base, with the nickname of the Moving Stone Coffin, is itself a moving mountain range. Normally it is wandering at sea as its name suggests, but sometimes it comes up on dry land.
It seems they research mainly body alteration, but the specifics are unknown.

    *What is an alchemist?
One who studies the flow of matter. That is what an alchemist is. The alchemists of the Clock Tower created products like the homunculi of the Einzbern by merging with western magery.
However, the ultimate goal of the alchemists of the Atlas Institute is set even closer to the original ideology, as the "transformation of events". The often spoke-up "transformation of base metal to gold" in alchemy is, to the members of the Atlas Institute, mere "transformation of matter" and is nothing more than a primitive art far removed from their ideals. Their alchemy is an advancement of the metallurgy of ancient Egypt, the root of the discipline, and has not been influenced by western magery like the alchemy that the Clock Tower magi handle.

  37. [v] Melty Blood Official Guidebook (2003-08-01) - Glossary: Clock Tower, p.077

    Clock Tower
The supreme headquarters of the Mage’s Association. Clock Tower refers to The British Museum. Shiki’s “teacher” was a pupil of the Clock Tower. The mechanisms of magic and magecraft are only briefly touched upon in Tsukihime, so if you want to know more please check out the novel Kara no Kyoukai (Garden of Sinners - doujinshi/self-published version) in which the main scenario writer Kinoko Nasu explains in more detail.

    Location
The building (academic building) that is the Clock Tower is located in the suburbs of London and has a similar appearance to country-wide Parliament(Big Ben). This is the First Department. Bounded fields in the surrounding areas protect against people (from physical methods include inspection zones on highways and cartographic erasure to bounded fields obscuring vision). In addition, eleven departments reconfigured themselves as satellite cities in districts surrounding London (Slur. Rocks Road, etc).
Professors on active teaching duty at the hub set up a London residence. Although the Clock Tower is fundamentally a research institution, their home (headquarters) so to speak are their department's cities.
For example, El-Melloi II rents an apartment in London. After he finishes his morning work as a Clock Tower professor, he returns to his home, Modern Magecraft city Slur, in the afternoon to take care of his students.

Q: Just what is Gazamy the Evil Spook thing that's been made out to be the top disaster in the Magic Association?

A: It's the name they call this magus that's locked in the bottom of the London Tower. Not that dangerous a person, but they say that no person has ever had a magic attribute as troublesome to magi as that. We'll eventually learn more of Gazamy probably.
