Li ShuwenWP (李書文WP, Ri Shobun?), Class Name Lancer (ランサー, Ransā?), is a Lancer-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile[]
Identity[]
Appearance[]
Li Shuwen with his heyday body, summoned as a Lancer.[1]
Personality[]
To put him in a few words, a blade that cuts sharply upon being touched. Li Shuwen has regained his youth; therefore, he is equipped with a condition where his rough nature is laid bare in the open. On the topic of one having attained their youth to some extent after becoming, more or less, heroes, there are many people who will have that sort of breezy feeling of feeling young again, but for Li Shuwen in particular, that nature is stronger within him.[2]
At the time of having grown old, he was intimate with children as the “grandpa who taught them boxing”, but Li Shuwen as he is now swings his evil fist of his own accord, devoting everything he has to fight a formidable and tough enemy, and being a martial artist with even some austere sense.[2]
Fundamentally, he would fight with anybody who is a strong Servant, but the one who he wishes to fight the most—is the elder Li Shuwen.[1]
Relationships[]
- Scáthach
- What resulted of the last bout in the fifth chapter? It is not clear because of the Human Order correction.[2]
- Wong Fei-hung
- In the history of Chinese martial arts, this person is the master standing at the highest peak. Imagining about that special move which leaves not even a shadow behind, Li Shuwen wonders how closely it can reach him, so he will not calm down unless he kills that hero, even if he is only dreaming of such a moment.[2]
Role[]
Fate/Grand Order[]
Fifth Singularity: E Pluribus Unum[]
Li Shuwen is neutral towards the conflict between the Celts, the Americans, and the Resistance, only wanting to fight Scáthach. He later encounters her, along with Ritsuka’s party, while fighting Shadow Servants summoned by Medb, near their camp. He introduces himself to Scáthach and challenges her to a duel. She refuses however unless he can defeat Mash, otherwise he must leave. After fighting Mash to a standstill, Li Shuwen sees the group stands a chance against the Celtic. He then requests Scáthach to fight him at the end, regardless of the world’s state. After she accepts his requests, he says Thomas Edison seems to be possessed by something.[3]
Later, he participates in the climatic battle between the Celts and the Americans, having complied with Scáthach’s request to aid the Americans.[4] He fights Beowulf until Clan Calatin bursts from the ground, having been summoned by Medb[5], and assists against them until they’re destroyed by Arjuna’s Pashupata. He later meets Scáthach in Land of the Shadows, and the two begin their appointed duel.[6]
Event: Sanzang Coming to the West[]
Li Shuwen plays the role of Shu Wujing. He and David (who plays Zhu Bajie) fight some monsters and drive them away. However, the two end up getting stuck beneath rocks for some reason.
Eventually, he is rescued and recruited by Xuanzang Sanzang after she had done the same for Bajie. Afterward, however, the group becomes surrounded by monsters that Bajie and Wujing encountered before. After killing the monsters, the group agrees they need a horse. They meet Lu Bu playing the role of the White Dragon Horse. Due to his frightening disposition, Sanzang refuses to use him like a horse until Ritsuka hands her a scripture he was protecting. After reading the scripture, she declares to her disciples that they’ll collect the rest on their way to Tianzhu.
Continuing their journey, Wujing asks Sanzang what happened to her previous disciples. Sanzang recalls dismissing them for a reason yet unknown to her. She gets hungry, so the group finds a full of fruit. However, it turns out to be a trap set by Golden Horned King and Sliver Horned King (played by Stheno and Euryale, respectively), who welcomes the group to the Lotus Cave. Wujing warns Ritsuka that if they answer to their name, they'll be sucked into the Purple Gold Red Gourd and melted alive. However, he sees neither it nor the Suet Jade Flask. Golden Horn and Sliver Horn claim those Noble Phantasms aren't necessary and call upon Bronze Horn (played by Medusa). Wujing's will to fight falters upon seeing Bronze Horn and thinks she should be saved. Sanzang, however, tells him not to fall for the kings' tricks. After forcing Golden Horn and Silver Horn to retreat, the group eats themselves full of the food in the cave and takes its treasures. They then continue onward to Tianzhu after Sanzang lets Bronze Horn go free.
Red Boy (played by Mordred) confronts the group, intending to stop their journey. After driving her off, the group nears the Flaming Mountains. Wujing warns Sanzang of a nearby presence, so the group enters the mountains to lose their pursuer.
There Sanzang tries and fails to walk through the fire to extinguish it. After White Dragon Horse saves her, the group slays their demon pursuers. Wujing then informs Mash (who made contact with Ritsuka earlier) that it's been a month since they departed from the Tartar territory when she mentions a time lag. Mash says it's only been four days on Chaldea's side. After the transmission is cut off, it is revealed Wujing and Bajie were only following Sanzang half-heartedly to fight strong opponents, which upsets the monk. Ritsuka tells Sanzang the scriptures are the key to the journey, according to Romani, when a spear-wielding woman appears. She tells them the Flaming Mountains are a test and leaves with the scripture containing Sanzang's memory after lecturing her. Bajie asks Sanzang if she knew her, but she can’t remember clearly. When Wujing identifies her the woman as Nezha, Sanzang remembers they need the Banana Leaf Fan, Princess Iron Fan’s Noble Phantasm, to cross the Flaming Mountains.
Leaving the mountains, the group goes to the Banana Leaf Cave to get Banana Leaf Fan. Princess Iron Fan (lplayed by Florence Nightingale) refuses to give it to them since there are no reports of illness around the Flaming Mountains. She then accuses them of spreading disease and threatens to cook Bajie, forcing the group to fight her.
After defeating her, the group returns to the mountains with the Banana Leaf Fan. Sanzang is concerned that it looks like a certain holy sword though. Calling it Excalibanana Leaf Fan, she extinguishes the flames, and the group crosses the mountains.
Later, the group meets the Ox-Demon King (played by Artoria Alter). Sanzang returns the Banana Leaf Fan to her. As a sign of gratitude, the Ox-Demon King gives Sanzang the scripture she possesses. She then shows the one Nezha gave her when she visited earlier. She claims Buddha gave her a mission, revealing he sealed Sanzang’s memory inside the scriptures the group has been collecting. If Sanzang takes the sixth scripture, she’ll recover her lost enlightenment, and her journey will end. Sanzang refuses so Ox-Demon King decides to make Sanzang realize it doesn't matter who recites the scriptures. Recognizing the upcoming battle is hers, Sanzang tells her disciples not to help her as she thinks it’ll incite Buddha’s wrath and prevent their return to their world. Her disciples, however, declare they’ll stay and help her fight the Ox-Demon King. After being defeated, the Ox-Demon King confesses she complied with Budhha in exchange for him removing the odor of Iron Fan’s disinfectant.
Continuing the journey, Ritsuka asks where Tianzhu is. Wujing answers it is India. He also reveals when the living Sanzang entered India, Mahayana Buddhism had already perished, and the famous Jetavana Monastery fell into ruin. The surviving teachings were left to few monasteries and rare scriptures. The group then comes to River Ganges and sees Arjuna and Karna on its shores. Nezha arrives and explains they’re Underworld guardians.
After Arjuna and Karna is defeated, Ritsuka is able to rayshift back to Chaldea. Sanzang confirms Wujing’s suspicion that she’ll stay behind and set off on another journey. Calling him Li Shuwen, she tells him that his levelheadedness kept her from crying during the journey. Li Shuwen then disappears.
Final Singularity: Solomon[]
Li Shuwen is one of the "E Pluribus Unum" Singularity Servants that appear to aid Chaldea.
GUDAGUDA: Legend of the Imperial Capital Grail[]
The Shuwen that appears in the Singularity is a Servant summoned by the Holy Grail to take part in the Singularity’s Holy Grail War. Bored by the lack of worthwhile opponents, he sought to fight an official Servant in their territory, hoping they’ll provide a greater challenge. He is disappointed, however, when the official Lancer is killed with a single strike.[7]
Ritsuka’s party soon arrives and is welcomed by Shuwen. Okada Izou decides he will take Shuwen on himself, believing him to be a glorified athlete. Though initially excited by Izou’s boastfulness, the ensuing battle quickly proves to be yet another disappointment for Shuwen. Shuwen tells Izou that he could have been something with his natural talent if he had training. Izou is greatly offended and boasts that he can make any style his own just by seeing in action once. Shuwen believes Izou surpasses in raw talent, but that is all he has. He continues that a true martial artist must be skilled in many disciplines and suspects Izou died young and foolish. Seeing Izou cannot fight, Ritsuka orders Okita Alter to fight, despite Izou’s objections.[7]
Despite her amateurish swordsmanship, she manages to kill Shuwen. Shuwen commends her conviction and understands she greatly cares for Ritsuka. He tells Izou that their skills were close, yet still very distant from one another. Izou asks him why he’s helping him, to which Shuwen confesses that Izou reminds him of himself in his youth. Shuwen then advises him to rebuild his skills from the ground up and to show his superiority to his opponents rather than boast of it. While the task is the same, he believes Izou changing his approach will change how he feels about it. He then disappears, saying that it’s fun to surpass one’s own limits.[7]
Chaldea’s Shuwen later joins Chacha as one of her Seven Imperial Spears under the name Katou Shuwen. He is Cú Chulainn’s replacement, who has wandered off into parts unknown.[8] He is the second Spear to be defeated by Ritsuka’s party.[9]
Interlude[]
Abilities[]
While summoned as Lancer, there are no special changes in his basic performance. The golden age of his body has naturally his younger days as standard, but it is possible to conjecture that his martial arts reached its golden age when he approached old age.[1] Li Shuwen (Old Assassin) states that if he ever met his younger Lancer self they'd end up killing each other. When asked about who is stronger between the two, Li replied that his Lancer self is obviously stronger. That said, he still claims that he would win, as strength alone is not the only factor in deciding the victor.[11]
Combat[]
Scáthach states that Li Shuwen's technique is quite impressive, making her itch for a good fight. He has a great potential plaything, and if they were in the Land of Shadows, she would train him right away.[3] Houzouin Inshun while training felt so excited he challenged Li Shuwen to a duel. Ritsuka Fujimaru says that they were dangerously close to killing each other and that he was forced to stop the match. Inshun later confessed to Old Li that it seems like he still has a long way to go.[11]
Li easily defeated Okada Izou and regarded him as a waste of potential. This made Izou believe that a weak Servant such as Okita Souji Alter in her first Ascension wouldn't last more than a second against Li. Although she was doomed from the start, she still blocked Li Shuwen's attacks no fewer than three times. Despite Okita Alter lacking confidence in her skills, it is thanks to her ignorance that she was able to deliver a flawless, techniqueless decisive blow to Li. Still, Li claims that he may not have lost hadn't he relaxed his guard at the last moment. Ritsuka Fujimaru states that by this point, she seems a lot stronger than she was before. She says that the reason she is moving better is having seen Okita Souji fight, and that Izou's previous fight with Li helped to weaken him.[7]
The fight between Li Shuwen and Yan Qing is so incredible that Leonardo da Vinci gets dizzy just watching it, making her unable to determine who has the upper hand. Yan regards Li as a slow, brute of a Lancer. Yan claims that while there is nothing wrong with saving it all for one strike, Li's emotions get the better of him, allowing Yan to see through him. Li eventually admits that even with the benefit of his spear he stands at a disadvantage. While Li is quick to consider that perhaps he should abandon his second name "Divine Spear", Yan comforts him saying that he is the Skillful Star. Even against Yan Qing's fists, Li managed to dodge, parry and attack using his spear. Just when Yan thought Li's attacks were almost too direct, Li would start throwing "whimsical" twists. Mash Kyrielight notes that none of them were holding back.[10]
While Li is summoned as a Lancer, he can still fight without using a spear, as shown when he defeated Beowulf. Beowulf claimed that fighting Li was harder than fighting Grendel.[5]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Magic Resistance (D Rank): Nullifies Magecraft Spells that were done in one step (a Single Action). A Magical Resistance of the same degree as an amulet that rejects Magical Energy.[2]
Personal Skills[]
- Chinese Martial Arts (Liu He Da Qiang) (A++ Rank): A Chinese rationality. A count of how much one has mastered the martial arts that made becoming one with the universe its objective. The degree of difficulty for learning this is of the highest level and, unlike other Skills, A Rank is finally at a level one can say to have "learned it". Upon reaching +++, one is an expert among experts. While summoned as a Lancer, he has mastered the BajiquanWP - including spearmanship.[1]
- Sphere Boundary (B Rank): A technique that uses Qi to perceive the state of affairs in the environment around oneself, while also, having their own existence disappear. By mastering this to achieve a state of oneness with the universe, it becomes possible to even have one’s figure become naturally transparent. Due to being summoned as a Lancer this time, his usage of Sphere Boundary has not reached a complete Presence Concealment like before.[2]
- Juezhao (B Rank): The secrets of BajiquanWP that Li Shuwen had learned. With regards to Anti-Unit abilities, this is certainly said to be the ultimate one among them.[2]
Noble Phantasm[]
Li's Noble Phantasm is God Spear, No Second Strike, an Anti-Unit attack that is more similar to a technical skill but has been sublimated as a Noble Phantasm. Unlike his Assassin version, Li uses his spear for the attack, increasing its range.
Development[]
Creation and Conception[]
Yuuichirou Higashide and Kinoko Nasu are the scenario writers for him in Fate/Grand Order.[2]
Li Shuwen was illustrated by Arco Wada in Fate/Grand Order.
Comment from Illustrator[]
"Braids! CHEERS FOR BRAIDS!!!! HOORAY! The background of Li Shuwen’s last picture is based off a photograph taken at Yokohama Chinatown. Since I wanted to draw a nightlife Shuwen standing at a dazzling spot that resembles Chinatown and Kabukicho, his Third Stage outfit was determined through a reverse lookup of the image from his last picture."
