Dust of Osiris (オシリスの砂, Oshirisu no Suna?) is a potential future version of Sion Eltnam Atlasia created from remnants of Sion's soul within TATARI. She is the Thirteenth of The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors after succeeding the Night of Wallachia. She is the main antagonist of Melty Blood Actress Again.

Profile[]

Background[]

Dust of Osiris is a version of Sion created from remnants of her soul consumed by Wallachia after drinking three liters of her blood. The pieces of her soul developed correctly within TATARI over time and fought to seize TATARI's control system. Normally it would have been an impossible struggle, but when Night of Wallachia was destroyed she was able to take control of TATARI. She is a potential future version of Sion should she stay with Atlas rather than chase Wallachia to Japan and eventually reach the position of chief of Atlas.[1]

She worked on creating the Philosopher's Stone to cure vampirism and revive Riesbyfe Stridberg,[2] and also continued acting as an Eltnam while working on the prediction of the future for the purpose of protecting humanity from unavoidable destruction and the acquisition of a method of salvation from it. Having found no way to save humanity, much like Zepia hundreds of years beforehand, she was eventually appointed as one of the Twenty Seven after Wallachia's death and sought to protect the future by destroying it herself and keeping an eternal record.

She is brought forth one year after the Night of Wallachia was destroyed by Arcueid Brunestud and Shiki Tohno, and uses her abilities to recreate the events of the previous year, "Hologram Summer", once again in an attempt to form an even superior "Night of Wallachia." Her goal is to reach the future summoned by Arcueid to defeat Wallachia. She believes that this is the "final and ultimate method of salvation"[3] due to the fact that the self-destruction of humanity is unavoidable.

Personality[]

Osiris claims to lack emotions and ego, believing them to be what destroyed humanity,[4] generally referring to everything with specific calculations, recalculations, and possible mental burdens as "processing slowdown." She only speaks to certain individuals that she encounters, and otherwise she simply continues with her calculations in a robotic fashion while preparing to destroy the intrusion. When Dust of Osiris is defeated, she briefly takes the form of Sion before disappearing.

She believes she is the discarded human husk of Sion[2][5] that was taken in by TATARI, and later developed into the "giant of Atlas", who differs from the vampiric remains of the real Sion who "degenerated towards humanity" and Sion TATARI who "degenerated into a demon."[1] She believes the original Sion also seeks the same conclusion, as they split from the same person.[4] Sion says that indeed originally this would have been her goal, but she has changed since three years ago and now believes in a better future, which surprises Osiris.[5] Sion TATARI likewise says that she would have reached the same conclusion as Osiris had she stayed at Atlas, but she thinks Osiris is foolish for only being able to come up with an ending that boring even though she was able to create the Philosopher's Stones.[6]

Melty blood Riesbyfe ending

Riesbyfe kills Dust of Osiris

The original will of Sion still exists within Osiris, and she feels troubled facing her own "worst possible condition" of Sion TATARI having embraced her vampirism.[1] Akiha claims that even if they're the same person Dust of Osiris is simply not the Sion she knows, and Osiris agrees that while she and Sion are both in ruin, it is Sion who is alive. Osiris can understand Sion's jealousy of Akiha's ability to decide based on her emotions.[7] Interactions with Shiki and Riesbyfe bring about her true emotions, and surface the will of Sion that wishes for the destruction of TATARI and the prevention of the birth of an even superior TATARI.[4] Shiki is called the "greatest singularity", as he directly identifies her as Sion despite his memory of the previous TATARI incident being sealed. She finds this to be unforgivable, and claims that he represents a goodness that could potentially make her throw away the logic of becoming TATARI.[8] Shiki, after defeating her, mentions to Sion that Dust of Osiris looked lonely, and Sion replies that Osiris' only saving grace was to be destroyed by him.[9] Before the events of the game, Osiris had expelled the still living Riesbyfe from TATARI because she could not accept having Riesbyfe inside her. Riesbyfe upon confronting Osiris says thaf if she has really become a computer it's fine for her to work for others, but as she is still human she should pursue her own happiness, because someone who doesn't understand humanity can't hope to save it. After fighting with Riesbyfe, as she is dying her personality returns to that of Sion, and she apologizes to Riesbyfe for her actions. She thinks that she is a disappointment for having been turned into a vampire by Wallachia after Riesbyfe gave her life to save her, and she is happy to have been killed by Riesbyfe, as it means Riesbyfe was able to protect Sion's soul until the very end.[2]

She has completely given up on a future that ensures humanity's survival, much like Zepia before her. She finds the idea of survival to be hideous, while believing the hollow outcome of destroying it and keeping an eternal record of their existence to be the only form of salvation.[3] She sees herself as the "bird of the underworld that mourned the future and ceased holding hope in it", and a "prophet soaring through the end, together with HermesWP." She has no interest in anything else, wishing to destroy anything that brings no profit to the planet, such as Aoko Aozaki's Magic.[10] She claims that she has done no wrong as she has never laid hands on a single person, unlike Night of Wallachia, but Ciel says that the cleaner she keeps her hands the more sinful her genocide is.[11]

Wallachia, also recreated as part of the Hologram Summer, finds that despite their similar goals, her scenario is greatly flawed. Osiris is surprised that he would resist her when their goals are the same, but he says that while he lost his mind after finding that there was no future where destruction was avoidable, she simply gave up and turned to preparing for what comes after destruction instead. He compares her to a child that doesn't want the curtain call. They may have reached the same conclusion, but they took completely opposite paths following it. He thinks that an end following the desperate struggle to live on is a satisfying conclusion, while what Osiris is trying to achieve is merely destruction. He also echoes Riesbyfe's sentiment that Sion should learn to enjoy herself as a human before hoping to save humanity.[12]

Role[]

Melty Blood[]

Dust of Osiris is the final boss of a number of character scenarios in Melty Blood Actress Again. She is a non-playable boss character that takes up the majority of the screen like G-Akiha and Neko Chaos Black G666.

Dust of Osiris is the cause of the events of Actress Again. She reenacts the "Hologram Summer" exactly like Wallachia's scenario one year earlier, which was one step away from attaining the Sixth, with the only difference being that she will recompute and correct the conclusion. She has taken the future of humanity's extinction brought forth with Arcueid's Marble Phantasm to defeat Wallachia and deployed it in a way similar to a Reality Marble. She believes this future is the Black Land (黒い大地, Kuroi Daichi?), the etymological root of alchemy,[13] and that it can be used to execute a better, swifter, form of annihilation compared to waiting for humanity to become extinct on its own. As a "mere smear on the world", she has taken it to bring about her desired future. It is the world showing the death of the planet in the future, where all life has become extinct, everything has been destroyed, and all has returned to dust. Following her goal of destroying humanity, she is using a great forbidden spell to seal reality in fantasy before TATARI dissipates. Following the world egg magical theory, once the world she created inside of the egg is completed, it will be switched with the world on the outside.[11] Aoko comments that such a large ritual may attract the First Wraith, Stanrobe Calhin, to the city.[10]

After humanity is destroyed, she wishes to create a record of humanity in a medium that will never wear away, the Philosopher's Stones that power Hermes. Since the record cannot be finalised until humanity no longer exists to add to it, and humanity's destruction is inevitable, she intends to speed up the process by destroying humanity herself. She believes there is salvation in completely ceasing the furthering of humanity's history, and making a record that will never be destroyed or forgotten in order to give all life significance. Even with no one to view the records, the possibility of other beings learning from it remains.[3]

Other appearances[]

Dust of Osiris does not appear in the game UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH, but Hermes makes a special appearance as a special attack for the character based on Sion, Eltnum.

In Fate/EXTRA CCC, Rani VIII crafts a Mystic Code called Dust Storm of Osiris (オシリスの砂塵, Oshirisu no Sajin?).

Abilities[]

Dust of Osiris is a Dead Apostle Ancestor, but she is no longer a true vampire after curing herself. She does not require the blood of humans to survive, having never harmed even a single person,[11] and she lacks the transcendent pride and obligation that they generally display, instead choosing to abandon the choice of continued survival.[1] She still possesses the Etherlite and wields it like Sion as a whip.

Philosopher's Stone[]

The method of creating an eternal record is through the use of the Philosopher's Stones (賢者の石, Kenja no Ishi?), the dust of the underworld transmuted using TATARI, and also called the Aqua VitaeWP (アクアヴィタエ?), the water of life, that is the basic and the deepest-most part of alchemy and the greatest secret of Atlas able to heal all pain, plagues, and death.[2][8] Initially created with the goal of curing vampirism and death, she will instead use them to power Hermes eternally. The ground in the Black Land is completely covered in Philosopher's Stones made with seven billion of the dead.[14] They consist of a blood-colored, gem-like substance that is made up entirely of lines of death when seen by Shiki,[8] and Akiha can hear them scream with agony.[15] Osiris uses the Unified Language in order to record information into the Philosopher's Stones. Individuals are disassembled and processed into living circuits for the Philosopher’s Stones. Those with superior magic circuits like Ciel are preferable to reach her goal.[11]

Hermes[]

She uses Hermes (ヘルメス, Erumesu?), a Spiriton Computer,[1] which will keep all records of humanity eternally. She refers to the processing unit as her main body.[4] With the crystallization of the planet and all of mankind transformed into Philosopher's stones, the circuit of Hermes, after drinking them, will continually think of the assumption that humans still survive, even after mankind has died out and the planet has cooled.[10] Arcueid claims this idea is one thousand years too late.[3]

In Fate/EXTRA, Hermes serves as the core of Rani VIII.[16]

Tatari[]

She has complete control over the abilities of TATARI, utilizing the gap from the changing of dates to shift the entire city of Misaki back one year to the "Hologram Summer" of Melty Blood. Only those involved within the events of the previous year experience the time slip, while normal civilians are kept within the correct flow of time.[17] The memories of those present are also altered, causing them to forget most of the past year, believing Wallachia is the cause and forgetting that they have met Sion before, with the exception of the real Sion, Satsuki, White Len, Shiki Nanaya and Aoko. She also creates images of Michael Roa Valdamjong and Riesbyfe that were not present the year before as factors in the completion of her scenario. She displays the ability to "program" individuals created through TATARI, though they are not completely bound by those orders. Riesbyfe was to act as a defense mechanism, and was programmed not to approach Hermes. She believes that the will of Sion before becoming Osiris is what allows her to deter from her role as a defense mechanism.[4] Shiki is referred to as a singularity that made the reformation of the night possible, and he is a fluctuating variable that keeps the "answer", Osiris, and the Black Land from being completed. She states that he is both a factor in creating and destroying her, and that before she is erased by the "correct answer", he must disappear in order for her to become the only Sion.[8] Riesbyfe implies that Shiki is able to resist the effects of Osiris' TATARI because of his Mystic Eyes.[18]

The beings brought forth by Dust of Osiris' calculations differ from those normally brought forth by TATARI. They are not made from rumors, but instead as a precise replication of the previous Hologram Summer. There are also those who were not present, such as Roa, created from the memories of the land, and Riesbyfe, brought forth by Dust to protect her. She can also control them to some extent if she programs their actions, but they are not absolutely bound to her. Those created still retain the autonomy allowed by other TATARI replications, meaning that they can attack or attempt to slay her if they so wish.
