Fujino Asagami (浅上藤乃, Asagami Fujino?) is the antagonist of the third chapter of Kara no Kyoukai, "Remaining Sense of Pain". She is a classmate and friend of Azaka Kokutou, both of whom attend Reien Girl's Academy.[2]

Profile[]

Background[]

Born Fujino Asakami, she is the daughter of Miyuki Asagami and Hanefune Asakami, a descendant of the Asakami Demon Hunters and inheritor of their telekinetic abilities. She has been taking medication since childhood, as her father wanted to seal her powers as he believes in the modern era, nobody needs people with unusual abilities anymore.[4] By giving her an over-dosage of medication, she developed insensitivity to pain. She became the eldest daughter of the Asagami after her mother remarried Kouzou Asagami. When she was little, she was able to bend things without touching them, gaining the villagers' attention.

When she was in her first year of her junior high school, she participated an interscholastic field day where six of the city’s junior high schools participated in the competition. She injured her leg while she took part in the track and field event, Mikiya Kokutou took care of the injured Fujino even though she was a student from another school and she fell in love with him after he showed her kindness.[5]

She entered Reien Girl's Academy at high school and she became close friends with Azaka who also entered at the same time.[6] Although the Academy rarely allows students to go outside, Fujino is allowed to enter the city twice a month due to periodic medical appointments.[2]

When she went for her periodic medical appointments, she was snatched by a local gang and was periodically raped by them. The gang eventually became bored with her inexpressive face until one of the delinquents struck her from behind, causing her sense of pain and her powers to sporadically return. During in one of the rape assaults, she believed that her abdominal pain was caused from one gang member stabbing her with a knife. In retaliation, she awakens her abilities and kills all of the gang with the exception of Keita Minato, who managed to escape.

As she wandered the town fearing what he might reveal, she meets Souren Araya who offers to heal her spine, though his motive for doing so was to have her fight against Shiki in hopes that she would be able to surpass Shiki's inner potential.

Appearance[]

A girl in her late teen, Fujino has pale skin, red-blood eyes with a melancholic look, and long dark purple hair with a hime cut and two longer side bangs that almost go to her chest. She mostly wears the school uniform of Reien Girl's Academy.[2]

Personality[]

She is noted to be a model student, being kind to classmates, never causing trouble, and frequently achieving the highest scores, except for Literature, as she "lacked expressiveness".

Despite her mild and passive personality, she is the type that cannot stop on her own accord after straying once. Due to lacking some type of sensation, she cannot truly experience things despite having knowledge and common sense. Compared to Shiki who lacks a sense of existence, Fujino is someone who is similar yet different.[2] According to Souren Araya, she is "an existence unfit for society, who found pleasure in coming in contact with death".

The reason she walks onto the bridge is in order to feel beating of the memorable summer rain.[2] Her happiest moment would be walking with Mikiya to his home and the conversation she had with him.[7]

Chapter 3: Remaining Sense of Pain[]

The story begins when she sought to kill all of the members of the gang. Shortly afterwards, she was found by Mikiya Kokutou, who allowed her to stay at his apartment for the night, thought neither of them properly introduced themselves to the other. Despite this, Fujino recognized Mikiya as the kind senior who helped her after she sprained her ankle during a track meet when she was in junior high school.

As she killed Keita's acquaintances in an attempt to find him, she unwittingly found pleasure in the action, and later on killed an innocent passing-by driver. Hearing about this, Shiki resolved to kill her.

At the climax of the story, Mikiya revealed that he learned that Fujino had a terminal case of appendicitisWP, causing her abdominal pain, and Touko concluded that she had actually killed the wielder of the knife before he stabbed her. What caused her to seek revenge was a misunderstanding.

Shiki triumphed over her during their final battle when she became able to perceive, and destroy, Fujino's telekinesis with the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. In an act of desperation, Fujino destroyed the bridge above them, though she came out injured and dying from the debris of the collapsing structure. After her defeat against Shiki, she cries out to Mikiya but also states “I want to keep thinking” about her entire life, similar to Kirie Fujou.[8] Shiki found her and stabbed her, but at the last second, Fujino lost her sense of pain, and her powers, and Shiki lost interest in killing her, instead destroying her appendicitis.

Numb with pain, Fujino mentally regressed to a child and afterwards was taken care of by her mother; she also seemed to have lost her sight, and it took her several months to recover. She has become somewhat famous for her apparent connection with both the serial killing and the collapse of Broad Bridge.[9]

Chapter 6: Oblivion Recorder[]

When school starts again following the main events of the chapter, Azaka meets with Fujino and asks her to tell her roommate that she is leaving the campus for the day. She is seen slowly adjusting to her disability in the movie.[7]

Kara no Kyoukai: Future Gospel[]

In October 1998, Fujino meets a student from Reien Girl's Academy, Miyazuki, on her way back to the hospital. Miyazuki had visited the Fujou building, the place where her best friend, Yuuko Andou, jumped off two months prior. Later in the night, Miyazuki, who wants to follow Yuuko into death out of guilt, again meets Fujino, who stops Miyazuki by threatening her with her powers and encourages Miyazuki to live on.

She is later seen answering Azaka Kokutou's phone call, and welcoming the latter back to Reien together with Shizune Seo.

Abilities[]

Fujino mystic eyes

Fujino's Mystic Eyes

Her ability, the Mystic Eyes of Distortion (歪曲, waikyoku?), straddles the line between ESP and Magecraft: an innate ability that was tampered by human hands.

She can create an axis of rotation anywhere within sight and warps them telekinetically, which causes gruesome dismemberments and deaths. Her left eye twists leftwards and her right eye twists right; a channel is needed for each direction. When perceived by Shiki, the bending appears as red and green spirals. Note that the 'Distortion' Fujino possesses is far more powerful than the average - by comparison, a normal user of Distortion would take several days just to bend a human arm.

The power of Distortion is limited as long as she thinks “unbendable” won’t bend.[10] But her powers do not work on conceptual things, and magical barriers and Bounded Fields cannot be bent, but what they are built on certainly can. Fujino cannot effectively adapt her bending abilities because she has no knowledge of magecraft, but she could become very powerful with the aid of a good teacher.[11]

In addition to her Mystic Eyes, Fujino also achieved Clairvoyance during the battle with Shiki; combined with her Distortion, this allowed her to bend objects outside of direct eye contact, making her a fearsome opponent. She achieves the greatest ability within the story when looked at from pure statistics.[2] After the events of the Broad Bridge incident, her eyesight became extremely poor to the point where she has to rely on a blind stick.[7]

Development[]

Kinoko Nasu explains that in the scene where Fujino monologues, the movie version differs as it focused mostly on memories of Mikiya, while the actual intent was a little different. The “I want to keep thinking” she said then was actually referring to her entire life up to that point, including her current state of feeling alive, and the state of numbness she’d lived in up until then.[8]

If Fujino knew Azaka was the sister of Mikiya, the scenario would have changed onto a completely different route. The final confrontation would have changed to Combustion versus Distortion and the Reien Girl’s Academy would be completely obliterated.[6]

Receptions[]

Outside of Kara no Kyoukai, she was given the nickname Fujinon (ふじのん, Fujinon?) by fans. It was later adopted by Kinoko Nasu, and he has mentioned that he considered her the most straightforward "moe character", citing her angst as a personal favorite.[12]

Q: So Fujino’s father forcibly induced her insensitivity to pain in order to suppress her power, but why? Didn’t the Asagami family want to pass on unusual abilities to their descendants just like the Ryougi family?

Q: So Fujino’s father forcibly induced her insensitivity to pain in order to suppress her power, but why? Didn’t the Asagami family want to pass on unusual abilities to their descendants just like the Ryougi family?

Nasu: That era has long since passed. Though the Ryougis have been very successful economically, the Asagamis have been defunct for quite some time. Probably, Fujino’s father realized that their family no longer had any reason to exist shortly before their collapse. In the modern era, nobody wants people with unusual abilities anymore, so there is no need to pass them on. Rather, they should be eliminated. That’s what he decided.
Takeuchi: But that’s not right at all. If they had opened the Twist Shop FUJINON, they could have taken the world by storm! They’d open stuck-on bottle caps, moonlight as rubber rollers, and make sculptures for the Hakone Open-Air Museum!
Nasu: Hahaha. That’s a pretty niche place to work, huh?

Q: When Kokutou and Fujino met in junior high school, what kind of gathering were they at? Was Fujino a participant in some kind of sporting event?

Nasu: It was an interscholastic field day. Sort of like a big rally to promote a sense of community between different schools, I guess? Around six of the city’s junior high schools participated in the competition. Needless to say, it was mainly track and field events. Since Kokutou’s athletic ability was poor, he was given administrative duties instead of being chosen as a participant. Specifically, he was put on the health detail, which is why he took care of the injured Fujino even though she was a student from another school.
Takeuchi: Geez, with a job like that Mikiya must have been tripping flags with girls left and right that day without even realizing it.

Nasu: That’s right. They knew each other from Reien Academy. They were both outsiders because they didn’t enter Reien until high school, so they ended up becoming friends.
Takeuchi: I see. So that’s why Fujino didn’t know that Mikiya was Azaka’s older brother, huh?
Nasu: You got it! If she had known, the scenario would have forked off onto a completely different route. The final confrontation would have changed to Combustion versus Distortion. Yeah, Reien Girl’s Academy would be completely obliterated!

Q: I read that after the incident, Asagami Fujino lost her vision. Will she ever be truly saved, or is she doomed to suffer in some way forever…?

Nasu: That’s her crime and her punishment. But she didn’t completely lose her vision, you know, just her eyesight. Or maybe, her eyesight became extremely poor would be a better way to say it. As for whether or not she’s able to adjust to it, you can catch a glimpse of that in Chapter 6 of the original work. Anyway, if we’re talking about Fujino’s “Happy End”, that already happened at the beginning of Chapter 3 when she met Mikiya and walked home with him. You could say she was saved right then, since that conversation was the only thing she ever wanted. As far as Fujino is concerned, it would have been fine if her story ended right there.
Takeuchi: Ah. So that’s the reason she smiled then?
Nasu: Still, it was ultimately just a “Consolation Happy End”. The divergence point for the best ending had already passed three years prior.

Q: The scene where Fujino calls out to Mikiya in the rubble of the collapsed Broad Bridge was just too moving. Somehow or another, I demand you give him to her…!

Takeuchi: Eh? That monologue was directed at Mikiya?
Nasu: Not quite. For the sake of time and so as to not overcomplicate the message, the movie version focused mostly on memories of Mikiya during that scene. But the actual intent was a little different. The “I want to keep thinking” she said then was actually referring to her entire life up to that point, including her current state of feeling alive, and the state of numbness she’d lived in up until then… man, when you put it into words it really sounds kind of stupid. Anyway, it was pretty similar to Kirie’s situation in Chapter 1.

Q: By the end, Fujino was able to bend an entire bridge. But, is there anything that even she can’t bend?

Nasu: In Fujinon’s world, things she thinks of as “unbendable” won’t bend. Since I already talked about it in the Chapter 3 Pamphlet Interview, I’ll leave it at that.
Takeuchi: So then, what’s something that won’t bend in Fujinon’s world?
Nasu: Come on, that’s so obvious! Doesn’t it go without saying that it’s that guy she met at the interscholastic field day in middle school!?

Q: Fujino's bending cannot influence things that are conceptual, but can she bend the barrier and bound field of magi?

A: Barrier and bound field cannot be bent, but what they are built on certainly can. Fujino cannot effectively adapt her bending abilities because she has no knowledge of magecraft. With a good teacher, she will certainly become a powerful monster.
