Sacchin
Tsukihime (2000)

Satsuki Yumizuka (弓塚 さつき?), also known as "Sacchin" (さっちん?, her nickname, a contraction of "Satsuki-chan"), is a student at Misaki Municipal High School in Tsukihime.

Profile[]

Background[]

Satsuki's crush on Shiki began when her sports club was trapped inside a room after-hours in the winter, freezing cold as they had all still been in their gym outfits. When it seemed as though nobody was going to come and rescue them, Shiki suddenly appeared and freed them by cutting the lines of the lock. She developed feelings for him from that moment onward, but he had never really noticed her.

Appearance[]

19-stk t02

Vampire Satsuki

Satsuki's overall appearance is mundane. She wears a school outfit, consisting of a white shirt with a yellow jumper over it, a cute blue bowtie, and a blue miniskirt, along with shoes and socks. She also has heavily twin-tailed brown hair and brown eyes, though they became red eyes after her transformation into a vampire.

Her hair appears short at first, but concept art in Geccha 2 reveals its full length after her hair is no longer tied up. She is described as becoming pretty by Neco-Arc after her transformation into a vampire according to what had been planned for her route.

Personality[]

She has an unrequited crush on Shiki, who only sees her as another classmate. She plays somewhat different roles in the game and the anime. In the game, she is shy and has somewhat of an inferiority complex while she is more outgoing in the anime. She is also quite popular between her classmates because of her affable personality, but she does not seem to care about it.

Due to her lack of a route in the original game, she is often made fun of in comedic segments, and she is especially tormented by Neco-Arc.

Role[]

Tsukihime[]

One day she finally worked up the courage to walk home with Shiki, and convinced him to promise her that if she is ever in trouble, he will come and help her. When she goes to investigate rumors about Shiki wandering around town late at night, SHIKI appears and bites her, turning her into a vampire. Most people simply die or possibly turn into a weak zombie when bitten, but Satsuki was an extremely rare exception who not only became a vampire, but quickly gained control over her powers as well. Her fate depends on the route.

Arcueid's route[]

SatsukiArcRoute

Satsuki walking home with Shiki

« So if I'm ever in a pinch, you'll come and help me, right? »

(Satsuki walking home with Shiki - Arcueid's route, Day 1)

Satsuki gets the courage to walk with Shiki Tohno back home, even though they're just classmates. She tells him how he rescued her and her classmates years ago from a locked room and thanks him for saving her, even though he barely remembers the incident. She asks him to protect her if she ever gets in trouble, to which he casually agrees. She doesn't come to school the next days and is pressumed to have disappeared. Presumably, she either didn't survive getting bit by SHIKI, or was killed by either Arcueid or Ciel.

In the anime, based on that route, Satsuki plays a more supportive role, and is never bitten by SHIKI. She is portrayed as somewhat more outgoing and a mutual friend of both Shiki and Arihiko Inui. She confesses to Shiki near the end of the series, only to be rejected.

Ciel's route[]

« Oh yeah, that was it. They said it's some kind of modern vampire or something. »

(Satsuki joining Shiki and Arihiko's conversation - Ciel's route, Day 1)

In Ciel's route she only appears when she joins a conversation between Shiki and Arihiko, as they talk about the recent murders in town. Shiki wonders why she butted in their talk, as he's not friends with her. She suffers the same fate as in Arcueid's route.

Akiha's route[]

Tsukihime.full

Satsuki trying to make Shiki into a vampire

« ...I wanted to talk more with you, Tohno-kun. Normally, just as classmates, to talk more. That's why I really don't want to die now. But this is for the best. So don't cry, Tohno-kun. You did the right thing. »

(Satsuki after being fatally stabbed by Shiki - Akiha's route, Day 3)

Shiki Tohno sees Arcueid Brunestud and like in the former routes, he has the urge to kill her. However he's distracted by Satsuki, who had been absent from school lately. Shiki notices something is wrong with her and follows her to an alley, when he sees four bloodied corpses. Terrified, he runs away to find Satsuki, who starts teasing him and appears to mistake the situation as Shiki killing those people. He notices that her hands are soaked in blood, and Satsuki reveals it was she who had killed those people, but only because she needed their blood to live, although Shiki is unable to understand. She then runs away, telling Shiki they'll see each other again.[2]

The next day, Shiki searches for her at the shopping district, but he ends up at the park. She tells him that she always loved him since high school the first time he talked with her. However, Shiki does not remember it at all. She then asks if he likes her. Shiki rejects her, but says he's still concerned for her. Suddenly, Satsuki starts coughing blood painfully and bites Shiki's neck, trying to turn him into a vampire to be with her forever. She then reveals that she always knew of his murderous impulses, because she stalked him for years. That was the reason why she never got the courage to talk to him, but felt attracted to him somehow. However, her bite has no effect on him and she begs him to help her. Remembering his promise to "help her if she got in trouble", he stabs her as she tries to bite him again. As she dies, he apologizes to her for not being able to save her, but she insists he did the right thing. With these last words, she turns into ashes and vanishes.[3]

These events would continue to haunt Shiki for the rest of the scenario, and he didn't want Akiha to share the same fate as Satsuki.

Hisui and Kohaku's routes[]

S313-sum

Satsuki after being attacked by Shiki

« I was always watching you, Shiki-kun. Even before I was saved in that warehouse, I was always watching you. I'm... really a coward. »

(Satsuki admitting her feelings for Shiki - Hisui's route, Day 3)

Hisui (or Kohaku, depending on the route) tells Shiki that Satsuki came searching for him and is waiting for him at the park. He does catch a glimpse of Satsuki, who now has red eyes due to being vampirized, but she runs away from him. Shiki goes looking for her and he is just about to give up and go home when he hears a noise from a nearby alleyway. He decides to investigate and finds the alley covered in blood and corpses. Satsuki admits that she did it and begs Shiki for help before running off. Later, he receives a phone call from Satsuki, who is waiting for him at the park.

The next day he confronts her at the park. He asks her if she's behind the murders in the city, which she agrees. She then asks if he likes her, but he rejects her because they're just classmates. Feeling rejected, she attacks Shiki to turn him into a vampire, but he is able to overcome it because he cuts the lines of the blood she bit on. He then has a murderous urge to kill her and does so without a second thought. Before dying, she says that she is happy because that was the first time that Shiki looked at her with serious eyes.[4]

Manga[]

SatsukiManga

Satsuki in the manga

« When I saw you talking to us so calmly....I was so relieved...And then I realized at that moment that there were all these people around me who seemed reliable....But the one who actually helped me at that moment, when I needed it....must be someone like you, Tohno-kun. »

(Satsuki reccounting to Shiki how she saved her in the past - Tsukihime Manga, Chapter 2)

In the manga (which is an adaptation of Arcueid's route) Satsuki is friends with Shiki and Arihiko. After she and Shiki walk home together, she tells him that she is going with her parents to a luxurious hotel to celebrate her birthday. Satsuki also tells him he was the one who saved her and her classmates years ago when they were trapped in a locked room. She leaves, before asking him to protect her if she ever gets in trouble.

Later Nrvnqsr Chaos provokes a raid in the same hotel Satsuki was staying. Assuming that she was one of the cassualties, Shiki decides to action against the vampire. However, she is shown to be fine the next day, because she couldn't make it to the hotel due to a cold.

Kagetsu Tohya[]

« Bye-bye, Tohno-kun. And see you again someday. »

(Satsuki's message to Shiki - Kagetsu Tohya, Drinking, Dreaming Moon)

In "The Tohno Family Con Game", the whole cast plays an elaborate game of tag for Kohaku's sake. She particaptes but is successfully caught by SHIKI, who uses his power as her 'parent' vampire to paralyze her.[5]

She briefly appears as a ghost in "Drinking, Dreaming Moon". Shiki and SHIKI drink sake together in the night and the former believes it's all a dream. However at the end it's revealed he was having a conversation with SHIKI's ghost and Satsuki's ghost was with them too. Unfortunately Shiki couldn't see her, but she's happy enough that she could see him one last time.[6]

Melty Blood[]

Melty blood satsuki ending

Satsuki's ending

In Melty Blood ReAct, she appears in the arcade mode, and is a playable character. The scenario suggests that she did indeed become a vampire, but Shiki did not kill her. Nasu mentioned in a doujin anthology about Ciel (月の彼方、永遠の眼鏡 TYPE-MOON作品集) that Melty Blood was written using the events after the "Satsuki Normal End", whereas the manga version of Melty Blood suggests that Shiki did indeed kill her. She seems to have become good friends with fellow tragic vampire Sion, and together forms the "Back Alley Alliance".

In Melty Blood: Actress Again, she notices that Sion had gone somewhere and searches for her, Encountering Roa (who she remembers as a tragic vampire like herself who is forgotten by nearly everyone and tries to befriend) and Riesbyfe along the way, until she finds the Dust of Osiris and defeats her. Afterwards, she is seen roaming the cities with Sion and Riesbyfe (the newest member of the Back Alley Alliance).[7][8]

Carnival Phantasm[]

SacchinCP

Satsuki in Carnival Phantasm

« Okay! So like, the three of us barely get any screen time, but I do think that we can do our best together in this fashion! »

(Satsuki to Sion and Riesbyfe - Carnival Phantasm, Episode 2)

She makes small appearances in Carnival Phantasm and is mocked mercilessly due to her lack of appearance. She's completely ignored by the other girls and Shiki doesn't even bother to remember her name.

In the "Afterschool Alleyway Alliance" skits she tries to play as the straight man to the smart Sion and the hot-blooded Riesbyfe, but she's mostly ignored by them as well.

Other Appearances[]

She is the main heroine in Back Alley Satsuki. Ultimate Satsuki (アルティメットさつき, Arutimetto Satsuki?) is the final character to beat in the event. Her design and font theme is a shout-out to Gen Urobuchi's other work.

Abilities[]

Satsuki's exact status remains a mystery, but she had quickly advanced in rank as a vampire, going directly from human to being a Dead Apostle. This is due to her possessing an inherent Psychic ability, an additional "channel" is her brain, that made her naturally suitable to become a Vampire. Instead of acting under the Parent Vampire, her amazing "spiritual conception" as a result of her psychic ability made her into an independent vampire immediately.[9] She is one of 27 to 30 individuals in the whole world who possesses this special idiosyncrasy to become a Dead Apostle.[10]

She has a Reality Marble, Depletion Garden (枯渇庭園, Kokatsu Teien?), which rapidly decreases the mana of the area where the Reality Marble is expanded.[11] It is similar to Akiha Tohno's Plundering ability, but drains and dissipates the mana in the environment rather than absorbing the magical energy of a single target. It is extremely effective against Magi who need mana to attack or Elementals that require it in order to exist, but it has no actual effect on creatures that are cut off from the world, such as humans who don't survive on mana. This is uncommon even for powerful vampires and would rank her close to the Dead Apostle Ancestors as she even possesses the Mystic Eyes of Enchantment.

Development[]

TYPE-MOON had originally planned for her to be a heroine in the story, as explained in the Tsukihime PLUS-DISC story Geccha and alluded to several times in Kagetsu Tohya. This would eventually see fulfillment in the Tsukihime remake through Tsukihime -The other side of red garden-, by giving her a story path that was originally excluded due to time and design constraints.

Kotone of Fate/Zero was to originally be named Satsuki, but it was changed upon remembering it was Yumizuka's name. Gen Urobuchi forgot not only about the name, but that she even had a name.[13]

Satsuki's character image song, as stated in Geccha, is T'EN VA PAS, performed by Harada Tomoyo.

Shiki's classmate. During the vampire incident one year ago, she was bitten by the vampire Roa and subsequently went missing.
In Re-act, she appears as a dropout vampire who still sides with humanity despite having been turned into a Dead Apostle.
She is a pitiable girl, who had been Shiki's classmate several times since middle school, but never managed to capture his attention. Even now, she is nursing an unrequited one-sided love.
Something of an oddity, she was unremarkable as a human, yet had exceptional talent as a vampire. The fact that she was able to operate as a Dead Apostle less than a day after being bitten is totally unheard of.

Shiki's classmate. Her nickname is Sacchin.
She is a pitiable girl, who had been Shiki's classmate several times since middle school, but never managed to capture his attention.
She just happened to catch sight of somebody who looked like Shiki walking through town one day, and because of that ended up being bitten by a vampire. Afterward, she stalked the town at night as a half vampire herself, her body and mind crumbling, until she encountered Shiki and met her end.
Basically, your typical tragic heroine. She remained unrewarded to the bitter end, but I'd like to believe she at least received a fleeting salvation in her last moments.
As it happens, she had an exceptional predisposition for being a vampire. The fact that she was able to operate as a Dead Apostle less than a day after being bitten is totally unheard of. That she was only able to discover her talents after death… it's a little ironic, no? Exactly what you'd expect from the shadow heroine Sacchin.
Still, at her core she's a normal girl. Though she might be on the same level as the 27 Dead Apostle Ancestors as far as pure suitability is concerned, since her personality is still human it seems that she's doomed to be an eternal dropout.
In Melty Blood Re-act, she participates as a usable character for the first time, allowing players to enjoy situations that were impossible in the original story. Sion is her pen-pal and fellow back-alley dweller. It's a relationship based on the assumption that Satsuki was still alive when Sion first came to Japan.
The reason she doesn't have the corpse-throwing killer move that she demonstrated in Tsukihime is because the Satsuki in Re-act has still never killed anybody. Perhaps if there's ever a "full vampire" version of Satsuki, though, it will make an appearance as well?

Nasu: If you become a vampire, the Holy Church will be after you all the time, so he couldn't take that risk. If his objective (goal) was to become "immortal", he may have turned into a vampire, but other than that, well, it's whether or not he had the talent to become a vampire. There are only about 27 idiosyncratic people like a certain Ms Yumizuka and her "You thought I was common? but I'm actually SSR!" in this world!
Takeuchi: What? Aren't there actually a few more out there?
Nasu: Yeah, let's say we undercounted and add about three more.

    Depletion Garden [Technique name]
Yumizuka Satsuki's Last Arc. A reality marble.
Satsuki's powers blossomed after becoming a vampire, and this is her strongest attack. As the name "depletion" suggests, the magical energy in the deployed space is rapidly dissipated. Though it is similar to Akiha's Origami, the target of Depletion Garden is the world itself. Also, the depleted magical energy does not return to the user, Satsuki, but instead merely vanishes.
It is a field effect that could be considered the natural enemy of magi, who require magical energy to attack, and elementals, who require magical energy just to exist.
On the other hand, against organisms that are cut off from the world (for instance, humans, who don't use the magical energy in the atmosphere much at all) there will not be a pronounced effect.

    Sacchin Arm [Technique name]
A name attached to all of Yumizuka Satsuki's various throwing skills. ("Sacchin" is a pet name for Satsuki.)
"Grasping the Unfinished Dream" is a ground attack. The A version is most effective in combos, while the B version is best used against stunned opponents.
"Chasing the Unreachable Dream" is an anti-air attack. The EX version's hitbox, attack power, and ability to lead into combos are all amazing. I'd even go so far as to say that building up the gauge just to use this move is the proper way of playing Sacchin.
Maybe in the next version of the game we'll add a third kind of throwing skill. How does an air-to-ground attack called "Picking Up the Fallen Dream" sound?
