- This article is about the Fate/Extra (CCC) Servant. For the Fate/stay night Servant, see Lancer (Fate/stay night).
Lancer (ランサー, ?) is the Lancer class Servant of Rin Tohsaka in the Moon Cell's Holy Grail War of Fate/Extra. While he is always featured in the story, he is only fought as an enemy the Rani route, while another Lancer is fought in the Rin route.
He is Cú Chulainn (クー・フーリン, ?), one of the great hero of Ireland. He is the demigod hero that appears in the Ulster myth, born between the God of Light, Lugh and Deichtine, the younger sister of the king of Ulster, Conchobar. His childhood name was Setanta and from a early age it has been prophesied that "This child will live as a hero".
Cú Chulainn means "Culann's Hound". This comes from when, after killing by accident the watchdog of a wealthy merchant called Culann, Setanta vowed the following:
"If this dog has a child, I will raise it myself into a strong and loyal watchdog. Until then, I will continue to protect you."
Even more than the physical strength to kill the famous hound of Culann bare-handed, the second name of Cú Chulainn is a praise to Setanta's caliber for being thoughtful to the master that lost his pet dog while still a child.
Upon growing into a strong adult, Cú Chulainn enrolled into the Knights of the Red Branch (赤枝の騎士, ?) that protected the king of Ulster. As a condition to marry a certain woman, he ends up going towards a ominous place called Land of Shadows. According to darker rumors, he suppose to meet his death. After overcoming many barriers, Cú Chulainn arrived at the Land of Shadows. The master of those lands is the witch Scathach. She took a liking of him and by training under her, he mastered many Magecraft and martial arts. In the Land of Shadows, he spent all the springtime of his life. A master that he could reverence, martial arts worthy of his passionate devotion and friends he could work hard together with. Especially, for him who had no opponents who could fight him on equal grounds, the friendship born between him and the swordsman Ferdiad, who was a rival that aimed together with him to be Scathach number one disciple, was certainly something unique. At the end of Cú Chulainn's training, he had learned all the martial arts of Scathach and, as proof of that, he obtained the demoniac spear Gae Bolg and left the Land of Shadows. While receiving the praises without stint of his close friend Ferdiad, he returned to his deared homeland Ulster.
In the legends, Cú Chulainn was conveyed as an heroic, deeply compassionate and pleasant young man. In the battlefield, he took down enemies without mercy, but he prized loyalty and possessed the nobility to never violate the vows he once exchanged. Among the Celtic warriors, there was a custom of each vowing certain commandment called "pledge(Geis)", and a curse would befall the warrior that violated their pledges. In accordance with his second name, Cú Chulainn had a Geis of "never eat dog for life", but later, several Geis like this became the main cause that rob him of his life.
The battle against the enemy army that came to invade his home-country of Ulster. In middle of a dilemma where the warriors across the country fell asleep due to a Geis, as the only one who escaped that Geis, Cú Chulainn had to hold back the enemy army all by himself. The queen of the enemy army, Medb scorned "What can a single warrior possibly do?" and marched triumphantly into Ulster. However, despite even riding superior chariots, Cú Chulainn repelled this large army by himself. Strictly speaking, he defended alone the path where the large army had to go through. Cú Chulainn who repelled the invading Medb army on countless occasions. Time until the Geis of sleep cast across Ulster was broken in that one year. Medb had to defeat Ulster within that one year no matter what. But Cú Chulainn's defense was an impregnable fortress and nobody was able to break him. During that fight, Cú Chulainn managed to capture Medb, who was the main culprit of the conflict, but released her.
"There is no way I can kill a woman."
For Medb, who was a queen, that was the greatest of insults. Turning into a personal avenger, Medb began to consider a plan that aimed not at defeating Cú Chulainn with strength, but rather weakening him by making him violate a Geis. Queen Medb proposed to Cú Chulainn that "If you accept a Geis, I won't break into the territory of Ulster beyond the necessary". They negotiated many Geis to him in their discussions. There was a countless number of traps in there, but Cú Chulainn accepted the Geis of the queen while acknowledging his own ruin. The pledge with Medb would certainly protect Ulster. However, all those Geis worked to entrap Cú Chulainn. Among the many Geis that Cú Chulainn exchanged, the two vows exchanged with Medb of "fighting only one warrior per day" and with his old friend Fergus of "one win and one loss" are famous. By the end of many schemes, Cú Chulainn continued to violate his self-imposed Geis one by one.
In the middle of a open battle, he put dog meat in his mouth by being deceived to think of it as sheep meat. For the sake of his friends, his country and his king, he threw away all his divine protections. In the end, he was made to fight even against his best friend, Ferdiad. Thus, the hero that completely lost all his powers, in the rapids that became the cornerstone of the defense, at last received a fatal wound from a spear in his flank. The proud Cú Chulainn refused to perish collapsed, so he tied his body to a pillar and continued to fight until the end of his life. That was the rapids of the four branches (Ath nGabla). Afterwards, this Rune was made into a proof of determination by the Knights of the Red Branch.
His appearance strongly resembles his Fate/stay night counterpart except he has a pale complexion, he wears a similar outfit to his mainline self but it looks more advanced. It covers his entire body with light blue lined design, with a light flame design on his left arm.
His personality is based on his counterpart.
He is first encountered in the elimination round against Berserker. When the battle turned in favor for Lancer and Rin, Rani VIII decided to commit kamikaze by overloading her magic circuits and explode the whole arena. Lancer was impresses with her commitment but Rin orders Lancer to impale her etherlite heart before she explodes. Hakuno Kishinami teleported to the arena thanks to the command spell. In Rin route, as Rani was about to explode, Lancer sacrifice himself to save Hakuno and Rin. In Rani route, as Hakuno's Servants fights against Berserker, Lancer used Gae Bolg to impale Rani's heart.
Rin and Lancer would be Hakuno's opponent in the sixth round, however they hacked the notice board so that Hakuno wouldn't know the opponent. In the arena, an unknown enemy later revealed to be Lancer was following Hakuno and the Servant with killing intention till Lancer retreated to avoid cofrontation. The next day, Lancer once again tries to kill Hakuno by luring them to the arena and use a combination of his Runes and his Noble Phantasm to kill them from a distance at the school. However Rin stop him and a large detonation was found in the arena entrance. In the second level, Rin uploads Lancer's data into an effigy. Once Rani transfer the Anti-Lancer Firewall Bypass, the effigy is easier to defeat. By defeating it, they learnt both the class and noble phantasm of Lancer. After the elimination battle with Hakuno, Lancer apologizes to Rin for failing her, though Rin blames herself for being a weaker master.
In the manga adaption, he fought against Lancer in the preliminaries round. When Hakuno ask Rin for help, Alice and Caster sent both of the master and servant to a different environment. Alice and Caster summons Jabberwock to fight, Saber and Lancer temporary join forces. No matter how much they damage Jabberwock, it regenerates causing them to think of retreat. Rin uses one of her Command Spells to force Lancer out of his limits to break a hole in the barrier to escape.
Lancer is one of the bonus bosses of the game, paired with Kotomine as his master.
Lancer wields his famous Gae Bolg (ゲイ・ボルク, ?) spear. His Noble Phantasm Barbed Spear that Pierces with Death (刺し穿つ死棘の槍, Sashi Ugatsu Shi Ibara no Yari?) is a crimson spear feared for piercing the opponent's heart without fail when thrust. The truth is, this spear is released after the outcome of "hitting the heart", a reversal of causality. Before the spear is released, it has already hit the heart as a premise. It can be conjectured as an attack against fate itself, described as not hitting because it was released, but rather being released because it had hit. To avoid Gae Bolg, what is important is not a high Agility value, but the power to change fate before Gae Bolg is activated - a high Luck value. It is the most efficient Noble Phantasm, as it requires a low amount of prana to be activated and, furthermore, is a one-hit-one-kill attack.
Lancer is a Rune User (ルーン使い, ?), a Magecraft system transmitted in Northern Europe. It has been said that, by engraving letters of power into stone, various mysteries are induced. Presently, it is a lost ancient Magecraft.
- Red Bough Wheel (赤枝の車輪, ?) - A skill used upon himself. It absorb enemy MP when using BREAK. The effect would only last for 3 turns.
- Spear play - Hammering Assault (槍術・初の槌, ?) - physical damage and paralysis on enemy. The effect would only last for 3 turns. He will use this Skill on the 1st move.
- Spear play - Median Lance (槍術・中つ槍, ?) Inflicts physical damage on an enemy. He will use this Skill on the 1st or 3rd move.
- Ath nGabla: Shoal of Extremities ( 四枝の浅瀬, ?) is a Rune technique that revives him. This effect which greatly boosts his strength and defense are permanent and would last till the end of battle, unless negated. The effect which would revive him will only last until his first death, unless negated.
A demigod hero born from a god and a human. Being a half-breed of gods or spirits is not an unusual special characteristic for a Heroic Spirit of Mythology, but there are not many heroes that are called Child of Light (光の御子, ?). Probably, he is the only hero that inherited the blood of the Absolute One, the chief god that appears in that national myth.
His Divinity (神性, Shinsei?) skill is a measure of one's Divine Spirit aptitude. At his ranking, his ability allows one to break through and defend against otherwise invincible skills, such as Enlightenment of the Sacred Fig (菩提樹の悟り, Bodaijuu no Satori?, localized as Sri Maha Bodhiya) and Protection of the Faith (信仰の加護, Shinkō no Kago?, localized as Aegis of the Divine).

01 - Gae Bolg: Spear of Barbaric Impalement
A crimson spear that always finds its mark.
The truth of this weapon is far more sinister than legends says. In a strange reversal of causality, the target and ultimate effect of this weapon have already ordained. The only variable presence in a successful attack is whether it is used or not. Once used, it is not a question of if it will hit, but how long it will take for its target to die. Agility will not help one avoid Gae Bolg should it used, but instead it all depends on one's luck.
Gae Bolg is the most efficient and deadly of all the Noble Phantasms, as it has a very low magic cost and almost always results in a one-hit kill.
02 - Wielder of Runes
A form of thaumaturgy unique to Northern Europe.
The foundation of this craft is the engraving of words of power into stone to induce various mystical events. It is believed that this ability has been lost to time.
03 - Child of Light
A hero believed to be the offspring of a god and a human. Demigods are fairly common amongst the Legendary Souls drawn from human mythology, although few of them are considered more than second-tier heroes by their adherents. This one, however, is believed to have inherited the blood of the Absolute One, the main god of his nation's pantheon of immortal beings.
Skills English | Japanese
Nullifies minor spells consisting of chants of two verses or less. Ineffective against high-level thaumaturgy and the greater rituals.
Increases vitality when in deadly peril. Makes it possible to fight even with fatal injuries and remain alive as long as a final decisive blow isn't struck. The ability rank of this skill has been temporarily reduced as his Master chose to boost his overall endurance at the expense of this ability.
This is a measure of one's Divine Spirit aptitude. At high levels, this ability allows one to break through and defend against otherwise invincible skills, such as Sri Maha Bodhiya.

01 - Character Background
One of the great heroes of Ireland.
First appears as demigod in Ulster mythology and is said to be the sun of Lugh, the God of light, and Deichtine, the younger sister of Conchobar, King of Ulster. His birth name was Setanta and from an early age it was foretold that he would become a hero of renown.
He was christened Cu Chulainn (which means Culann's Hound) after accidently killing the watchdog of a wealthy merchant. He took the name with pride, vowing, "I will devote myself to the rearing of a watchdog worthy of replacing the one I have just slain and until such time as that dog is ready, I will personally watch over and guard your life with my own."
Upon becoming an adult, Cu Chulainn was enrolled into the order known as the Knight of the Red Branch and then sent to the warrior-woman Scathach in the Land of Shadows to train as a warrior, and, according to darker rumors, meet his death.
Fortunately, Scathach saw in him a worthy student and disciple and passed on all that she knew of both martial arts and the more powerful aspects of thaumaturgy. Upon the completion of his training, Cu Chulainn was given the mighty demonic spear Gae Bolg and told to depart from the Land of Shadows.
After returning to be beloved homeland, his triumphs were many...but that is a story for another time.
02 - "Knights of the Red Bough"
All of the stories that surround the legend of Cu Chulainn are universal in their praise for his loyalty, heroism and compassion. And although he was famous for his terrifying "battle spasms" while on the battle field, his seemingly blind rage never overcame his steadfast adherence to his moral code.
Unfortunately, it was this unwavering adherence to honor that in the end lead to Cu Chulainn's demise. As a Celtric warrior, he was bound by a number of geasa (taboos), the violation of which would greatly weaken him. As a youth, he single-handedly defended Ulster from the armies of Queen Medb of Connacht. To add to insult of a single man annihilating her army, Cu Chulainn came across her on the field of battle, but chose to spare her life as he thought it dishonorable to kill a woman. From that moment on, the desire to see him die became an all-consuming passion for the disgraced queen.
Medb eventually came up with a scheme to weaken Cu Chulainn by using his own code of honor against him. By forcing him to violate several of the geasa that bound him, Cu Chulainn was stripped of the divine protections and gifts that were his birthright. However, he still managed to die with honor, tying himself to a stone pillar even as his life faded, as he vowed to never fall in battle.
