Magic Circuits.

Magic Circuits (魔術回路(マジック・サーキット), Majutsu Kairo(Majikku Sākitto)?)[1] are a pseudo-nervous system that spreads itself through the human body and what qualifies a person to be a Magus.

The Magic Circuits have two basic functions; one is to convert Life Force (生命力, Inochiryoku?) into Magical Energy and another is to allow their owner to access Thaumaturgical Foundations (魔術基盤, Majutsu Kiban?).[2]

They are also paths that connect the material world to the astral plane. To perform Mysteries, a Magus sends a command and Magical Energy to a Thaumaturgical Foundation through his Magic Circuits and activates one of the Magic Formulae (魔術式, Majutsu Shiki?) included in the Thaumaturgical Foundation[3] as if someone switched a computer on and sends it commands to run a computer program.[4]

Mechanisms[]

Circuits

Various states of Shirou's Magic Circuit.

Magic Circuits reside within the Magus’ Soul,[5] and what is found on the body is just a physical expression of them that stretches itself throughout the body in a fashion similar to the nervous system.[6]

They are composed of core components, which are the actual Magic Circuits so to say, and bypasses that connect those components to the brain. Magic Circuits do not change, and once damaged, they cannot be repaired.

Because organic activity is necessary for the operation of Magic Circuits, it is a common mistake to think that they are literally a part of the Magus body. There are rare occasions in which the Magic Circuits continue working even after the practitioner’s body has ceased all vital functions.[7] In these cases, destruction of the brain is necessary to stop the Magic Circuits. Their Quality (質, Shitsu?) and Quantity (量, Ryō?) are ranked through letters like Magecraft, and their Composition (編成, Hensei?), that describes the overall ability, often varies between Magi.

Like any other organ, the number of Magic Circuits that one possesses is determined at birth and cannot decrease or increase naturally, meaning that those from older lineages will be more powerful, but it is possible to change that number artificially through a number of methods. One of those methods is through the establishment of a mystic pass between two Magi from which the Magic Circuits can transferred. As the Magic Circuits are located in the soul, a fusion of body and mind is required during the transplant. However, the process carries the same risks and complications as an organ transplant. Furthermore, as the Magic Circuits become unstable if tampered with while in use, there is a possibility of mutual destruction if a contract similar to that between a Magus and his Familiar has not been established beforehand.

For that and other reasons, lineages of Magi do not seek to tamper with the Magic Circuits of their members while they are alive, but rather try to produce descendants with the greatest "extra" number of Magic Circuits possible. Note that number is not everything, and quality and precision of the Magic Circuits are also an important factor that differs from lineage to lineage. The Aozaki bloodline is known for producing Magi with a low quantity of Magic Circuits, but the great quality of their Magic Circuits is more than enough to compensate for that. Meanwhile, the Barthomeloi possess a powerful brand of Magic Circuits known as Blue Blood: Noble Magic Circuits (貴い魔術回路(ブルーブラッド), Tōtoi Majutsu Kairo(Burū Buraddo)?).

A normal person rarely acquires Magic Circuits but in these cases they are considered as sudden mutations. While Kirei Kotomine was born with sudden Magic Circuits not of his lineage, he is not of this type. Kirei's Magic Circuits were a gift from the divine sacrament, rewarding his father, Risei Kotomine, for years of pious worship. Kirei was born with "the right to recreate the miracles in the divine sacrament". This "right", in other words, was the Magic Circuits.[8]

Known numbers of Magic Circuits by characters

Still, the Magic Circuits are ultimately something unnatural for the human body and their activity will cause pain and numbness to the Magus. Their very presence in the human body is something uncommon and an ordinary person will have little to none. Also, the use of Magic Circuits increases the Magus bodily temperature, which is what allowed Kiritsugu Emiya to discover enemy Masters on the battlefield through the employment of a thermal sensor during the Fourth Grail War.[15]

Magic Circuits are “opened” when Magical Energy is run through them for the first time. Based on their experience at that time, a Magus makes their own mental trigger to activate their Magic Circuits at will from then on. For this reason, the triggers are different from each other and in an extreme case, self-injury can be regarded as a switch.[12] An unexpectedly large number of Magi have sexual excitement as their triggers and moreover many of them rely on drugs.[16]

Known mental triggers by characters

Prior to the Fifth Holy Grail War, Shirou believed that he had to “make” a new Magic Circuit every time he wanted to perform Magecraft. In each attempt to do so, he temporarily (and inadvertently) converted parts of his nerves into makeshift Magic Circuits. A very dangerous procedure, as failure would result in his body breaking down from the inside out and even with success the resulting pain would be comparable to inserting a hot iron rod into the spine. Furthermore, when his natural born Magic Circuits were finally opened, his nervous system went haywire due the sudden intake of energy. At first, neither of his teachers of Magecraft (Kiritsugu and Rin Tohsaka) noticed that habit of his.

A lesser known function of Magic Circuits is that they can be used to record and store information, in a manner not too dissimilar from computers or smartphones,[20][21] like replaying scenes seen in one's head.[22] Any Magus that is at least somewhat capable use them as a calculator in addition to their brains when solving problems.[23] They can also be used as a precise internal clock to keep track of time.[24] Some Magi use their Magic Circuits to compute translations.[25] Whether it's calculation or communication, Magic Circuits can do as much processing as a mobile terminal can do.[20]

As demonstrated by Fiore Forvedge Yggdmillennia and Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald, it is possible for Magic Circuits to negatively interfere with the user's body, either through birth or through outside interference.

Fiore

Fiore Forvedge Yggdmillennia and her wheelchair-bound condition due to the Magic Circuits.

In Fiore's case, she was born with a defective Magic Circuit in both of her legs, and this deficiency not only profoundly affects her Thaumaturgy, it also caused both limbs to stop working, causing her excruciating pain at times. The only possible way of healing would be through removing the Magic Circuits in her legs. In other words, it would mean giving up the path of a Magus.[26]

In Kayneth's situation, he fell victim to Kiritsugu Emiya's Origin Bullet which destroyed his Magic Circuits, rendering him unable to practice Magecraft. The fact that he survived in his debilitating state was due to his quick attention by Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri, who restored his internal organs, but the muscles and nerves were irreparably damaged. At first, he was completely paralyzed, with no hope of walking again. [27] It took a large sum of money and a Puppet maker to get only his hands in working order, and that only allowed him to move within the confines of a wheelchair.[28]

Reines El-Melloi Archisorte has a condition where her Mystic Eyes quickly overheat when they come into contact with Magical Energy, to the point where the burning sensation is compared to an allergic reaction, thanks to the immaturity of her brain and Magic Circuits. The development of her brain and Magic Circuits did not catch up with that of her Mystic Eyes, causing them to overreact in response to their use. However, as a side effect, it is due to this overreaction that her accuracy in Magecraft has become prominent.[29]

Luvia & Lord El-Melloi II

Lord El-Melloi II connecting to Luviagelita Edelfelt's Magic Circuits.

It is possible for Magi to connect to the Magic Circuits of other Magi, however, this is considered insanity. By connecting to someone's Magic Circuits, the receiver of the connection had absolute control. For a Magus of mediocre ability, the Magus who are the receiver of the connection would easily be able to manipulate, or even burn, the Magic Circuits of the connected Magus. Considering how Magic Circuits are linked to the body's nerves, it was similar to a Magus placing his living heart into the hands of the Magus receiving the connection. With the connection, one of the effects of the connection was that a Magus could flow their own Magical Energy into the recipient of the connection.[30]

Equivalents[]

Differing from the Magic Circuits of regular humans, Artoria Pendragon and Siegfried when he was alive have a Magic Core (魔術炉心, Majutsu Roshin?) granted by their Dragon blood.[31][32] Its capacity is far greater than any human can achieve. While a Magus' body can be considered a machine which creates Magical Energy, Artoria's Magic Core acts as a factory which creates Magical Energy.[32]

Gray also gets a Dragon Magic Core after Artoria is summoned as Saber in the Fifth Holy Grail War, with the summoning affecting Gray's body due to her nature, and turning her more into a perfect clone of Artoria.[33]

For Divine Patterns, see Fairy.

Regression to the Age of Gods[]

Beings like Lugh Beowulf, Arcueid Brunestud (Remake) and Tiamat have Regression to the Age of Gods (神代回帰, Jindai Kaiki?, also called Reversion to the Age of Gods) as their own style of Magic Circuits. It represents the extent at which they are capable of producing Mysteries that existed on Earth before Magic. They are ranked with quantifiable letters like Magic Circuits.

Their Quality ranking represents "how distant from what humans are capable of" when reproducing their pure Mysteries. Their Quantity ranking represents power, the higher the quantity, the greater the degree of influence over the surrounding environment. The C rank Quantity allows for the display of power over a village at most. Their Composition represents the era of the "Mystery", such as Runes, Kabbalah, and Black Magic do so in Magecraft. While similar in concept, things like Alice Kuonji's Ploys are not from the Age of Gods and cannot be assigned a number in Regression to the Age of Gods.[34]

The pseudo-nerves existing in the body of a magus.
They are the paths that convert life force into magical energy, as well as the paths which connect to the foundations underlying Grand Rituals.
The number of Magic Circuits is determined at birth. Mage lineages will resort to any means to alter themselves in hope of giving their descendants just one more Circuit.
This is why magi from older lineages are more powerful.
In terms of the number of Magic Circuits, and the quality of the lineage, Cornelius Alba is undoubtedly a first rate magus.
In fact, neither Aozaki Touko nor Araya Souren have many Magic Circuits. Touko has about 20, Araya about 30.
Still, the two are considered geniuses: Touko has talents that are independent of her lineage. Araya's overwhelming power is probably a result of the anguish that he ceaselessly accumulated through the ages.

    Magecraft
Many magi, and the magecrafts they use, appear in Fate/stay night. What is a magus, and what is magecraft? The section aims to address these questions and many more that arise in the story, in an organized and easily understood format.

What is Magecraft that Enacts Mysteries?
“Magecraft” is a general term for activities that seek to artificially reproduce mysteries and miracles. Regardless of how mysterious or supernatural it is, a phenomenon that occurs naturally is not magical. Mystic energy is required to use magecraft, and one who brings forth this energy and manipulates it is called a magus. Since antiquity, magi have endeavored in magical research. However, the existence of magi is known to few. “Reveal nothing to the world ignorant of mystery” is the absolute law that magi have imposed upon themselves.

    Keywords to learn about magecraft
Magecraft is a grand area of study which involves systematic research. Thus, there are many technical terms that are unfamiliar to the lay reader. This section will provide definitions of magical jargon that appear in Fate/stay night, to aid readers seeking a greater understanding of magecraft.

    •Incantation
An action required to activate magic. These originated as verbal chants, but also include hand and body movements.

    •Gandr
A magic passed down in northern Europe. It is a curse on the target that the user points at, inflicting discord on the mind and body. Because one must point at a target within one’s field of vision, it is also called the “Gandr shot.”

    •Origin
The orientation of something at the time that it sprang into existence. An Origin is what defines an existence as itself. In magical contexts, it is also used to refer to one’s magical alignment.

    •Reinforcement
Magecraft that flows energy to “elevate the existence” of the target. This has effects such as increasing the sharpness of bladed implements and the nutritional value of food.

    •Barrier
Magecraft that partitions inside from outside, and operates on the boundary or the inner portion of the affected region. It is primarily used to protect one’s body or property.

    •Reality Marble
Innate barrier. The projection of one’s mental landscape onto one’s surroundings, painting over the real world. It is very costly to magically create a Reality Marble.

    •Life force
The source of mystic energy. Magi use the magic circuits running throughout their bodies to convert life force into mystic energy.

    •Alignment
The magical orientation that determines the specialization of a magus. One’s alignment also influences one’s social standing as a magus.

    •Projection
Magecraft that creates an imitation of something that exists (or existed) in reality, using mystic energy. The projected item only persists for a few minutes, so Projection is viewed as an extremely inefficient magecraft.

    •Attribute
One of the factors determining the effect of one's magecraft. There are multiple types like reinforcement and projection.

    •Noble Color
A special, magical quality that one is born with. This term is not widely heard; it is primarily used by the magi of the Mage's Association.

    •Jewel magecraft
A general term for magecraft utilizing jewels. Tohsaka Rin specializes in this type of magecraft. Rin normally stores her mystic energy in jewels, and uses (spends) them as powerful magic projectiles.

    •Mystic Eyes
Magecraft that enacts effects on the target just by looking at it. Also known as “Evil Gaze” or “Evil Eyes.” If the target makes eye contact with the user, the effects are rapidly amplified. The use of Mystic Eyes is viewed as proof of being a first-rate magus, but truly powerful Mystic Eyes are a rare, inherent trait.

    •Magic circuit
The apparatus that converts life force into mystic energy. Circuits are like internal organs or nerves, such that people who lack circuits cannot use magecraft.

    •Magic foundation
A system engraved upon the world in advance to make it possible to use magecraft. This takes the form of academia or religion.

    •Magic crest
A crest created to pass on the results of magical research to the next generation. By engraving the crest on the body, a magus can pass on generations of research and magecraft to one’s successor.

    •Magus
A person who possesses magic circuits and can use magecraft. Magi who do not conduct research are called “spellcasters” to distinguish them from the magi that do.

    •Magic formula
Something included in a magic foundation and in which the function of magecraft is recorded.
The magus sends a command to the magic formula, puts magic power into it, and thereby activates the function of magecraft incorporated into the formula in advance.

    •Mystic Code
Tools magi use to assist the use of magecraft, or which have magical effects. These encompass a broad range of artifacts, such as the Noble Phantasms carried by Servants.

    •Magic
Mysteries of a different kind than magecraft, that produce phenomena considered impossible to recreate in the modern era. Ultimately, magical research aims to reach Magic. In the modern era, only five things are called Magics.

    •Mystic energy
The energy that is acquired by converting life force via magic circuits. Magi use this energy to activate magecraft.

  4. [v] Kara no Kyoukai Special Pamphlet - Encyclopedia: Magecraft [Others], p.038-039 [T]

    Magecraft [Others]
A general term representing activities that artificially re-enact Mysteries/Miracles.
Although there were some differences depending on traditions and schools, the basic principle was still "the transformation of the magical energy that exists within the practitioner or the environment".
The practitioner would issue Commands according to the Foundation (System) of his school, and this would cause the execution of a predetermined Program.
Magical energy was the electrical current required to deliver the command.
Although magecraft gave the impression of omnipotence, it fundamentally produced Mystery through the principle of equivalent exchange.
It was possible to transform one thing into another, but it was impossible to produce something from nothing.
However, the essence of magecraft as a discipline was to challenge that "Nothingness", and endeavor towards the impossible. Large-scale spells such as the so-called Grand Sorceries, Grand Rituals were really purposeless if not for attempting to reach " " (Kara) or True Magic.
Kara no Kyoukai was a story of one magus' attempt at challenging "Nothingness".

  5. Fate/stay night - Heaven's Feel (route) - True End: Return to the Spring
  6. [v] Fate/complete material III: World Material - Theory of Magic - Magecraft: Magus, p.041

    Magus
The everyday life of a magus is mostly spent conducting research. Magi who use magic outside of a research capacity, such as those who use magecraft to work and profit for themselves, are few in number. People who treat magecraft as a tool, such as assassins, are called “spellcasters,” and are looked down upon with disdain by the magical establishment.

Furthermore, it is precisely because they are magi that few magi use magecraft in their daily lives. The cost of using magecraft for mundane tasks is indeed high, but above all, this is avoided for the purpose of concealing mysteries. The Magic Association is extremely wary of allowing knowledge of magecraft to reach the outside world, so magi who are overly conspicuous in the use of magecraft are purged.

Magical families are essentially unilineal, in which one child inherits the parents’ assets and teachings in order to carry on the magecraft and research. These types of families are called magus lineages. Children other than the chosen heir may not even be told that their parents are magi. However, magic circuits are not wholly hereditary, and magi do not always produce children. In these cases, a child possessing magic circuits is adopted into the family. A major reason for the unilinealism of magecraft is that magic crests cannot be duplicated. The sole heir inherits all of the family’s magecraft.

    •Magic circuit
Magic circuits are the pseudo nerves that a magus has inside himself. These are paths that generate magic energy and access the magic foundation engraved in the world. Magi make magic energy with the magic circuits and use the magic energy to run the magic foundation and thus put magery into effect. To do either of these, the magic circuits are necessary.

As suggested by the description pseudo nerves, these are split into cores and lines joining these together and are spread throughout the body.

The number of magic circuits are fixed at birth and the number won't increase by other than external factors.

    •Magic crest
The product of stamping the anchored mystery that a magus had spent his entire life building up. Can be said to be mystical inheritance that defines the magus line as a magus line. While the inheritor is young, it is necessary to implant this little at a time while at the same time having the body adjust to the magic crest by medicine and rituals. The magic association also has technology for extracting just the magic crest from the body and storing it.

    •Magus alignment
What determines what kind of attributes a magus' magic is going to be likely to have, or what kind of magic the magus is going to have good chemistry with, is going to be the element aligned with the magus.
In addition to the five great elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and sky, there's the imaginary elements of Hollow and Nothing, for a number of seven.
Some of the five elements will differ according to the school of magic. A famous one is a style in which the five great elements are formed from wood, fire, soil, metal, and water.
Basically, one magus has one alignment, but sometimes there are magi with two alignments (like fire and earth, wind and water) and there are also those called "Average Ones" who have all the five great elements.

Matou Sakura normally would have been a holder of the imaginary element of Emptiness. However, through her magic training, hers had been changed to the water alignment of the Matou line, so she couldn't exhibit her true talent.

    Normal alignments
    Elements
    Explanation
Five great elements Earth One of the two alignments of Kiritsugu. Kiritsugu exhibited his attribute of combining and used magic which combined the wounds of an enemy in a different form than normal, and made them unhealable.
Five great elements Water The alignment that the Matou magi have had for generations. Matou exhibit the attribute of absorption and have passed it on. Sakura's alignment changed from Emptiness to water.
Five great elements Fire The alignment of Tokiomi and also one of the two alignments of Kiritsugu. It is the symbol of life and death and has good chemistry with destructive magic.
Five great elements Wind One of the two alignments of Kayneth Elmelloi Archibold. There are few magi with wind as an alignment
Five great elements Sky An element which makes up celestial bodies that is newly added as a fifth element to the four great elements of earth, water, fire, and wind. This is, in other words, Ether.
Imaginary Elements Hollow The alignment that Sakura was born with. Defined, in magery, as that "which is possible but is not in the physical plane". Also called imaginary numbers.
Imaginary Elements Nothingness Like Hollow, the alignment of an imaginary element. In magery, defined as that "which is not possible, but materializes". Has a different meaning that the "nothing" of physics and math.

    •The absoluteness called Origin
If alignment determines the root of one's magic, then even deeper than that, is the origin which determined the root of one's existence. The origin is not only for magi, but is the orientation that all things are born with and it's existence itself is thought absolutely necessary.
Those magi with an origin that is strongly expressed outwardly are sometimes removed from the normal alignments and there are times that the origin itself becomes the alignment. Most of those magi exhibit their talents as extreme specialists.
Because of that, it's said that they can reach higher grounds than normal magi.

    Shiroubw

Shirou Emiya's origin is "Sword" and his alignment as a Magus is also "Sword". He is unable to use magic of the five great elements with precision because he doesn't have any of them as an alignment, but it does allow for the manifestation of "Unlimited Blade Works."

    •Noble Colors
Of the alignments, wind is called "noble" and fire is "normal". By the way, the term "Noble Colors" is used to refer to special and innate things where he workings of the magic circuit are close to the movements of a celestial body (normally they're closer to the movements of the crust), and is innate and special.
Noble Colors are often used to refer to mystic eyes, and Rider's petrifying mystic eyes are also a noble color.

  7. [v] Tsukihime Dokuhon PlusPeriod - TSUKIHIME Dictionary: Magic Circuit [Term], p.188-189

    Magic Circuit [Term]
The foundation for setting up Thaumaturgy. There are two types, but here it refers to the quality within a human body that makes a magus a magus.
Magic circuits are responsible for converting life force into magical energy, and for connecting to the underlying grand sorcery formula.
Basically, sorcery is a formula that causes nature interference by starting up and stabilizing a "rule already established in the world" with magical energy. Or to put it another way, the "rule" is a car, and the "magical energy" is the gasoline that makes it run.
In order to start up sorcery, three things are required:
the necessary amount of magical energy, a key (password/spell/code), and magic circuits to inject the magical energy into the "engine".
If we assume for a moment that magical energy is electricity, then magic circuits would be both the reactor that produces that electricity, as well as the pipelines for running the system.
Because vital activity is indispensable to the operation of this reactor, there is a common misconception that a magus' body = magic circuits. However, though quite rare, magic circuits that continue rotating on their own even after the practitioner's vital activity has stopped do exist.
The reason that an individual's magical energy (od) will be regenerated even if is totally used up is because the magic circuits are still operating. But on the other hand, without magic circuits, magical energy (od) will no longer be generated at all.
They are spread throughout the entire body as pseudo-nerves, and can basically be divided into cores, and pipes that connect these cores together. The pipes are similar to the synapses within the brain, constantly breaking off and reconnecting, but the cores never change.
Strictly speaking, these cores are the actual magic circuits.
They are considered to be a sort of internal organ, that will never increase or decrease in number. Of course, extracting and transplanting them is technically possible, but just like implanting an extra organ into a human body it should go without saying what will happen if you try it.
Magic circuits, once lost, will never return.
As for what magi actually use these magic circuits for, well, that's covered in a different story.

Q: Kirei's wife Ortensia is covered with wounds in the design draft, is it because she has a body similar to Caren's? Also, Command Spells appeared on Kirei due to the fact that he somehow possesses Magic Circuits despite being born in a non-magus lineage. Does this mean Caren also has Magic Circuits?

A: Kirei's wife is an albino, and is immunodeficient. As a result, she can die from even a tiny wound, thus her body appears tattered. What Caren inherited is the aspect of "prone to be plagued by illnesses". This is truly an ordeal given by God.
About the Magic Circuits, a normal person rarely acquires Magic Circuits. You can consider such cases sudden mutations. However, Kirei is not of this type. Kirei's Circuits were a gift from the divine sacrament, rewarding his father Risei's years of pious worship. Kirei was born with "the right to recreate the miracles in the divine sacrament". This "right", in other words, was the Magic Circuits. Caren did not inherit the Circuits.

    Magic Circuits [Magecraft]
Pseudo-nerves within the body of a magus.
Magic circuits are responsible for converting life force into magical energy, and for connecting to the underlying grand sorcery formula.
Because the number of magic circuits a person has is fixed at birth, magi lineages do what they can to improve themselves and create an heir with even one more magic circuit.
Once the magic circuits have been opened for the first time, the practitioner can switch them on and off at will.
Each practitioner visualizes the flipping of this switch in their own particular way. For Shirou, the image is that of a gun's firing hammer, while for Rin it is stabbing a heart with a knife.
This image tends to be related to how the circuits were opened for the very first time, so there even those who can only open their circuits through sexual arousal or self-harm.
By the way, Shirou's number of magic circuits is an unexpectedly high 27.
Rin, on the other hand, has 40 main circuits, while her sub-circuits are 30 each.

    Legend
Once up on a time, there was a king in England named Arthur Pendragon. He was the legendary king who staunchly defended the land from the invading Saxons for a long period of time.
The name Arthur, written in the fashion of Romans is “Artorius”. Its feminine form is “Artoria”, which is the true name of Saber.
Artoria was born between Uther Pendragon and a Queen hailed from the rival kingdom. She grew up under the guidance of the True Magician Merlin, and became the king after pulling out the Sword of Selection. Later, she led Lacenlot, Gawain, and other famed knights to achieve innumerable deeds. They engaged the King of Saxons at the Battle of Badon Hill and brought peace to the land of Britain. Because the Scabbard of the Holy Sword stopped her from aging, Artoria continued to reign as the ideal king. It was ironic that Queen Guinevere and the serving knights grew more distant from Artoria precisely because she was too ideal. In the civil war that raged at the end of her reign, she crossed blade with her very own son, Mordred. At that instant, she pledged her service as a Heroic Spirit after death in exchange for striking a pact with the World. The one wish she hoped the Holy Grail could realise was “redo the selection of the king”. In legend, the body of King Arthur was transported to the Fairyland – Avalon, where he is healing his wounds in serenity.

    Tactics
Saber’s ability is maximally unleashed while engaging in an honourable face-to-face single combat. It is a method of battle that is full of chivalric honour, and it is also one that suits Saber's sense of aesthetics. However, this does not mean she dislikes strategising. Because she is also a capable military commander, she tends to loath fabricated strategies that have no concrete basis. She fine-tunes her strategy meticulously. While on the battlefield, she further adapts her actions in response to the ever-changing dynamics of combat. Naturally, Saber despises cowardly actions, strategies or not. For this reason, in the Fourth Holy Grail War, her compatibility with the cool-headed, achieving-his-goal-at-all-cost Master Emiya Kiritsugu was the worst.

    Class Abilities
    Magic Resistance: A
Artoria boasts the highest rank of resistance to magic amongst the Servants. She is capable of completely neutralising grand sorceries involving magic arrays and instant contracts. Even modern magi of the highest level cannot wound her directly with sorcery. Artoria is able to resist an action force onto her powered by one stroke of the Command Spell. Such is the extraordinary rank of Artoria’s Magic Resistance, sufficient to shake the very foundation of the Servant System. If the opponent is someone who attacks with sorcery, Artoria will charge without fear and determine the outcome of the battle with a slash.
Also, as her “Pendragon” name shows, Artoria is the holder of the Element of the Red Dragon, charged with the task of protecting the kingdom. She carries the very magical power of the Dragon. This humongous magical power is also the source of Artoria’s Magic Resistance. Due to the characteristics of Dragon, Artoria has much trouble with existences such as Siegfried, who is associated with tales of “Dragon extermination”. If she is targeted by “Dragon-slaying Sorceries”, it is possible that Magic Resistance will not function to its fullest extent.
In the story, Artoria retained her Magic Resistance of A while having Emiya Shirou and Rin as Masters, regardless the two’s differences in power and characteristics. On the other hand, while having Matou Sakura as her Master, her Magic Resistance decreased to B as a result of Blackening.

    Riding: B
Since “knights” are soldiers who are proficient in mounted warfare, Saber’s rank in Riding is very high. Chariots can be ridden the same way. Motorcycles and automobiles are treated as “modern mounts”, thus a high rank in Riding is also applicable. It is unclear if Riding is applicable to aircrafts. Saber’s Riding was elevated to A while having Emiya Kiritsugu as Master. However, Artoria can ultimately only control normal mounts. She cannot control Pegasi, Griffons, Dragons, and other Magical Beast, Divine Beast Ranked Phantasmal Species. This is due to her Class not being Rider, as well as the fact that she was a King in the Age of Man, thus did not have the fortune of having “Legends of Riding Phantasmal Species”.
Artoria rode a motorcycle in the Fourth Holy Grail War, but did not have the opportunity to demonstrate her Riding ability in the Fifth Holy Grail War. Provided with the appropriate mount, the battles might have developed differently.

    Personal Skills
    Instinct: A
Instinct is the ability to instantly identify “the best personal course of action” during combat. Because this skill allows for the prediction of trajectory, it is possible to avoid attacks from firearms. At rank A, it is essentially in the realm of predicting the future. Through this ability, it is possible to negate the penalties inflicted by visual and auditory interference to a certain extend.
Being able to discern Cú Chulainn’s ultimate technique certainly reflects her skills, but having exceptional Instinct also helped her immensely.

    Mana Burst: A
The ability to reinforce one’s weapon and body through the infusion of magical energy. By reinforcing the ability of the body to a great extend using magical energy, the physically fragile Artoria was able to fight head on with monsters such as Berserker. At rank A, even a stick can become a weapon of great power.
Executing large-scale body reinforcement through Mana Burst is only possible with Artoria’s immense magical power.
(Translator's Note: This is basically analogous to Strengthening/Reinforcement Sorcery.)

    Charisma: B
Artoria possessed high Charisma, and reigned as the king of England. The morale of military forces she commands is extremely high. However, this strong influence is still insufficient to build a vast empire spanning the world, so it remains at rank B (enough to rule a country).
Caption: Artoria, the protector of the British Isles. Even with her Charisma, she could not avert the fall of her kingdom.

    Noble Phantasms
    Invisible Air
    Rank: C
    Type: Anti-Unit
    Range: 1~2
    Maximum Targets: 1 Object

A barrier that renders the blade hidden by entangling it with layers of wind, and altering the light refraction rate. It is closer to a sorcery than a Noble Phantasm. By using this barrier, Artoria can attack without the opponent recognising the sword’s reach and trajectory. Since concealing one’s Noble Phantasm also conceals one’s true identity, Invisible Air was highly effective at the early stages of the Holy Grail War. It also has other advantages such as increasing attack power and accuracy. Entangling the sword with wind and using the wind as the blade enhances the attack power, while having an “invisible weapon” provides an advantage in accuracy. (Translator’s Note: It is probably more “decreasing opponent's evasion” in RPG terms.) Since the advantage of Invisible Air lies in “invisibility”, the accuracy increase will not occur while engaging opponents who possess Eye of the Mind or do not depend on vision.
In the Fourth Holy Grail War, Artoria unleashed the condensed air and used it as a long-range weapon that mauls down groups of enemies --- “The Iron Mallet of the Wind King”.

    Excalibur
    Rank: A++
    Type: Anti-Fortress
    Range: 1~99
    Maximum Targets: 1000 Persons

The greatest and most powerful Noble Phantasm of Artoria (Translator’s Note: Not Avalon?). It is the strongest and most majestic holy sword that symbolises King Arthur. The pinnacle of holy swords. Excalibur was not forged by mankind, but crystallised within the Earth, using the wishes of mankind as the basis. It is one of the ultimate God-forged weapons, a Last Phantasm. Originally cared for by the Faeries of the Planet, it was passed into the hands of King Arthur through the Lady of the Lake.
Excalibur converts the mana of the wielder into light, and as the sword is swung, the light is released from the tip of the blade like a laser beam and destroys everything in its path. Of course, the mana consumption is extreme, thus it cannot be fired consecutively. In the Fourth Holy Grail War, the beastly giant sea monster summoned by Caster was completely incinerated by this Noble Phantasm. Excalibur is classified as an ‘Anti-Fortress Noble Phantasm” due to its magnitude and destructive power.

    Avalon
    Rank: EX
    Type: Bound Field
    Maximum Targets: 1 Person
The sheath of Excalibur, a Noble Phantasm with its origin in the Fairyland Avalon where King Arthur rests. The wielder will heal from any wound, and the aging process will cease. Unleashing the true name of Avalon will deploy a Bound Field that provides the greatest defence. A Noble Phantasm that annuls the interference of True Magic; its existence is equivalent to True Magic.
In legend, losing this sheath casted an ominous shadow onto the life of King Arthur, eventually cascading to the collapse of the kingdom. In modern times, the Einzberns excavated Avalon at Cornwall and passed it into the hands of Emiya Kiritsugu. Afterward, it was planted into the body of Emiya Shirou to save his life, eventually becoming the link that led to his bond with Artoria. In Fate Route, Artoria learned that Shirou was her “sheath”, which led the duo to emerge victorious in the Holy Grail War.

    Saber [Servant]
Heroic Spirit of the sword. One could not qualify for this Class if all his parameters except MGI did not meet a certain threshold.
The true heroine of this story. She was the young girl knight who forged a contract with Emiya Shirou and fought in the Holy Grail War.
She was loyal, faithful, and diligent. The knight's pride covered her femininity.
If we were to remove this facade, then we could recognize that she was no different from a young girl her age.
Saber was peevish and tenacious. She loved games of chance and would focus to the extent of ignoring her surroundings. Saber loved to eat and would be energized by the prospect of having good food. She worried about being defeated in front of her favorite partner. Mmm, Saber was truly a fastidious heroine.
Her true identity was King Arthur.
She disguised herself as male and ruled as the king, but had the misfortune of dying in the subsequent civil war after establishing peace in her empire.
The King Arthur in the story of Fate was an amalgamation of historical facts and legends. Saber's name before becoming king was Artoria.
It must be tough to live in a palace while disguising her gender.
The greatest problem was probably producing an heir, but that was solved by Merlin through magecraft.
In the story, the line "I know how to please a man" was from experience.
Saber's aging process was halted the moment she pulled out the Sword of Selection. The age of her body was probably a year younger than Shirou.
By the way, King Arthur was the Crimson Dragon that guarded Britannia.
Saber's father Uther Pendragon produced an heir with the Dragon Factor according to Merlin's plan. As a result, Artoria was born human but carried the magical power of Dragons.
Magic Circuits were unnecessary, Artoria generated mana just by breathing in harmony with the coursing of her blood. It could be called a "Magical Furnace" that was worlds beyond what mages had to offer.
---Fate/Stay Night was originally her story.
The main theme during early development of Fate was "a story about the Holy Grail and King Arthur", and it had remained unchanged until now.

Q: What do the Quality/Quantity/Composition of Regression to the Age of Gods mean in Beowulf's profile? Do Ploys, Arcueid, and Heroic Spirits have such designations? And what would their number be?

A: Regression to the Age of Gods represents the extend at which they are capable of reproducing the Mysteries that existed on Earth before True Magic. Consider it to be like that, their own style of Magical Circuits. Quality represents "how distant from what humans are capable of" their pure Mysteries are. Quantity represents power. The higher the quantity, the greater the degree of influence over the surrounding environment. Since Beowulf only has a quantity of C, he can only display his power to an individual, or over a village.
Composition represents the era of the "Mystery". In terms of magecraft, it would be like Rune, Kabbalah, Black Magic and such.
Ploys are not of Age of Gods, so they cannot be assigned a number in Regression to the Age of Gods.
For Arcueid... Princess Arcueid should qualify. "Quality: B Quantity: A++ Composition: Before Common Era, pseudo-deified natural phenomenon"
