SenecaWP (セネカ, Seneka?) is an ancient Roman philosopher and the tutor of Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus.
Profile[]
Background[]
Seneca taught Nero much of the world. She saw him not merely as her teacher, but as a friend of hers as well.[1] Never having had a real father, Nero saw him as a father figure,[2] doing such things as teaching her about the origins of the board game Ludus duodecim scriptorumWP,[3] and scolding her for eating while lying in bed.[4]
Due to her tyrannical actions in getting rid of anyone who opposed her, Nero eventually accidentally drove Seneca to stepping down as Senator and retiring, before eventually committing suicide,[5] despite Nero repeatedly telling him that she would forgive him. He ended his life in her house, disbelieving her words.[2]
Personality[]
He was a fatherly sort of man in general.[2]
Appearance[]
He was a very tall man,[6][7] so well built for a philosopher that he could pass for a physical education teacher.[7]
Role[]
Fate/EXTRA[]
In the manga, he is seen in visions of Nero's past.[6][8][5] Agrippina hires him, believing Nero needs a private tutor to learn to be a proper emperor, and in doing so brings Seneca back from his exile. He first appears when Nero bumps into him, and he introduces himself. Nero claims she doesn't need a tutor, but Seneca doesn't relent, indebted to her mother for ending his exile. Nero shows him one of her sculptures, and after he calls it "questionable", he tells her that being a shut-in without experiencing the outside world is why she's so out of touch so he will teach her how to broaden her horizons.[6]
Nero reluctantly agrees since she finds him funny, hoping to use him as a pastime, but Seneca really helped her expand her knowledge, being the only person not to shun her because of her young age. Thanks to his lessons, Nero decides to reform the Senate so the power is concentrated onto herself to finally put an end to their political in-fighting and abuse of power.[6]
She later shows him her famous dress, which she made for the stage and to cross-dress, to Seneca's consternation.[8]
Fate/Grand Order[]
Interlude: Guardian of Septem is Here[]
Seneca appears in Romulus' interlude in Fate/Grand Order.[9]
Spiraling Testament World: Lilim Harlot[]
During a flashback of Nero's memories, Seneca attempts to commit suicide and tells Nero that is due to his own responsibility for her. He says that when he met her, she was a tiny gem shining brightly, but at that moment he only saw a malignant star, a comet shower of calamity, an all-consuming flame. He knew of that possibility and feels guilty for guiding her so far. He believes that not doing it was the most unsalvageable evil and truest act of love to come from within himself. Nero couldn't understand his words but still forgave him. Upon hearing this, he tells her to grant his request to leave his occupation and leave for a place beyond her reach. She says that she is the Emperor of Rome and governs the whole world, asking him where she can't reach. He then finalizes his suicide with the final words: "Your love won't reach them. Because you are a flame. All you know to do is burn-".[10]
