Sieg (ジーク, Jīku?) is the main protagonist of Fate/Apocrypha series, who acts as the second Master of Rider of Black during the Great Holy Grail War.

He also appears in Fate/Grand Order's Apocrypha/Inheritance of Glory event as Caster (キャスター, Kyasutā?), a Caster-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru.

Profile[]

Background[]

Sieg was created by Yggdmillennia as one of their many homunculi suited to various purposes. Initially kept in a magical energy supply tank devised by Gordes Musik Yggdmillennia to grant energy for Servants and was originally known as Homunculus (ホムンクルス, Homunkurusu?), he was one of many allowed to be used by Caster of Black for usage as harvesting materials for his golems. Due to his unexpectedly high quality Magic Circuits, he was thought to be a good choice for Caster's Golem Keter Malkuth.[4]

Appearance[]

A standard characteristic of Einzbern Homunculi, Sieg's eyes are the same deep, dark red of polished, perfect rubies. His hair is brown, though it appears to darken ever so slightly as he 'ages'. At the outset, Sieg's physique is quite slender and frail, like a newborn infant, and equally as weak. His standard clothing consists of a black waistcoat, white shirt, black slacks, and a pair of black leather penny loafers.

After obtaining the heart of Siegfried, his physical appearance changes slightly to mimic that of Saber. While his hair only darkens (and shortens) slightly, he grows far taller than he originally was, and the frailty of the past was replaced with a slender-but-hardy build much more suitable for fighting in a Holy Grail War. He also swaps out the loafers for a pair of half-boots.

Personality[]

« Perhaps we don't deserve such a thing as free will. I don't really know if what I've done till now is right or not. But, even if there's no rest beyond this... Even if there's only despair beyond this... At the very least I want to walk my own path! We don't ask for salvation either! But I want at least the freedom to choose! »

(Sieg)

Sieg comes into consciousness without anything to form a personality. He is scared of everything but himself, believing to be nothing. He calls himself transparent and colorless because he possesses nothing and had received nothing from his birth.

After escaping and receiving the hero Siegfried's heart, he becomes notably more selfless and brave as he gradually continues to develop as a person. Of his own volition, he decides to forsake a life of happiness, and instead aims to fulfill the desperate wishes of freedom his brother and sister homunculi who would die if nothing was done to save them. Eventually, he even willingly becomes a participant of the Great Holy Grail War in return for their promised freedom and safety as well as for the sake of both Astolfo (who had previously saved him) and Jeanne (who protected him). Due to his young age, he is initially very much naive and clueless about things such as common sense, basic human behavior, and how the world works though he is able to pass as an eccentric but otherwise normal, if slightly clumsy, human with a calm and logical personality in a very short amount of time. While typically very polite and humble, Sieg can at times display a blunt attitude during the rare instances he feels annoyed or frustrated. He also has a tendency to blurt out slightly rude observations without really meaning to which occasionally gets him into trouble with others.

He seems to have a high capacity for forgiveness as shown when goes as far as to unhesitatingly throw himself in harm's way to save both Caules and Fiore when their lives are in peril despite the Yggdimillenia's treatment of his brethren. At the same time, however, Sieg is extremely vengeful when those he cherishes have been harmed before him, not caring whether his enemy is a magus or a Servant, the only thing that matters in his mind is the fact that he will kill them.

After their final encounter with Assassin of Black and witnessing her, along with the children of Scotland Yard's horrific pasts, Sieg's innocent belief of humans being slightly flawed but inherently good creatures crumbles, leading him to began to question humanity's true nature. While he takes Jeanne's advice on not giving up on humans to heart, and ponders over the opinions of several other heroes on the matter, Sieg ultimately seeks his own answer to how he views humans and life as a whole.

Similar to Siegfried, he places little value on his own life and comes to view himself as something that can be used to save and help those around him, causing him to make reckless choices simply for the sake of what he believes 'he should do' instead of what he wants to do. He claims to have no interest in the normal, peaceful life Astolfo spoke of before, but it is revealed during a conversation with Jeanne that deep down, he does have a longing for it but willingly overlooks this fact for what he feels is a more worthwhile purpose that grants meaning to his life, as well as honors the hero Siegfried who died for Sieg. Thankfully, both Jeanne and Laeticia eventually encourage him to start considering his own value more, and he comes to realize that just worrying about the value of humans and his tendency to sacrifice himself for others would leave him truly empty in the end no matter what he ends up doing with his life.

While Sieg had his own reasons for opposing Shirou Kotomine's wish for salvation, the main reason Sieg chose to trap himself on the Reverse Side, which would have come about from the priest's use of the Third Magic, was not entirely motivated by "saving humanity". Sieg himself admits he hadn't experienced enough of the world to completely believe in humanity, though he accepts their nature of striving for good but containing evil. Based on his few experiences, he simply chose to believe in the good humans are innately capable of. However the main reason for his decision was because he witnessed Jeanne D'Arc's struggles and came to understand her. For her, who had everything taken from her due to a betrayal in life, who received the worst treatment conceivably possible for a human, and yet never cursed anyone in the end and even gave up her life to protect their future, Sieg wanted to 'become her strength' and thus carried out her will, acting for the first time on his own personal desire rather just giving himself for someone else's sake.

When encountered during the Inheritance of Glory event, he's developed even more. His personality is relatively the same as it was at the end of the Great Holy Grail War, but he is notably wiser and tempered by his past experiences. He is still somewhat awkward at interacting with others by himself, as seen when he first meets the protagonist and attempts to make himself appear as a solemn dragon, an act he fails comically. He often had to take many pauses to properly explain the current situation, flounders between the rough 'ore' pronoun and the more dignified 'ware' when referring to himself multiple times in the same conversation, and accidentally joyfully roared loud enough to briefly deafen the protagonist when they agree to assist him.

Relationships[]

Jeanne d'Arc
Sieg holds a deep admiration for Jeanne and wishes to support her by "becoming her strength", due to having found her ideals and the manner in which she lived very sad and yet incredibly beautiful. He tries to follow her example and way of living as best he is able. It's thanks to her words and faith in humans despite being betrayed by them that he doesn't fall into despair during the aftermath of the confrontation with Assassin of Black, and the reason that he is willing to learn more about humanity instead of simply giving up on them. It could be said that, in that moment, while she didn't save his life like Astolfo and Siegfried, she managed to save his heart. In the battle with Karna when he was on the verge of giving up, the thought of wanting to see her again was all that kept him going when he faced certain death. Though he doesn't realize what his feelings even after the fight, he does realize how important Jeanne is to him and rushes to stand by her side and support her. When she gives her life trying to destroy the Greater Grail with her Noble Phantasm only to be foiled by Amakasu Shirou's interference, Sieg snaps and flies into a murderous rage and battles the enemy Ruler so that her sacrifice would not be in vain. Many, many years after the war, Sieg and Jeanne meet once again in the Reverse Side of the World and Jeanne confesses her love to Sieg, saying unto him,"I am in love with you." Upon hearing those words, finally Sieg realizes just why he had been waiting in the other world for her for so many years.
"Hm? Oh, so the Maiden of Orleans is here too. I guess that makes sense. She would never stay idle if humanity was at risk. But I don't think she knows me so leaver her alone. She's just a vague, distant memory, even for me. And I don't see that changing unless we meet under different circumstances."[5]
"I see. Ruler being here is a natural logic. It’s not like she will remember me, but I can’t help but carelessly call out to her."[6]
Jeanne d'Arc (Swimsuit)
(Doubts his own eyes, rubs them)[6]
Jeanne d'Arc Alter
"Another aspect of that Ruler…? It’s hard to believe, but there are many things with this situation. And the outside may be different, but her being too serious at the core feels like Ruler. No, the class is Avenger, though."[6]
Jeanne d'Arc Alter (Swimsuit)
Japanese swords, three-sword style... (Nods with satisfaction)[6]
Astolfo
Astolfo, more than just his Servant, is Sieg's best friend as well as the savior of his life. He greatly respects Rider and cherishes him deeply, stating he would go as far as to die for Rider if the need ever arose so long as Rider would be saved and could continue to exist in the world without him. While Rider thinks of himself as weak, and curses his weakness for being the reason as to why Sieg threw away his chance at a normal life to save him from Mordred, Sieg wholeheartedly believes in Astolfo's strength. To him, Astolfo is truly an amazing person and a brave hero through and through. Though Rider's wild antics, his tendency to let extremely important details slip, and his miraculous talent for landing them in outrageous situations do cause Sieg to bury his face in his hands and sigh.
"I knew you were here, Rider... I don't get it, but he said my Saint Graph hasn't changed while giving a forced laugh. Okay, let's both do our best." [5]
"Rider is Rider anywhere. Um, I’m glad."[6]
Astolfo (Saber)
Servants that participated in the Great Holy Grail War
"Everyone is a splendid hero. Though only a little, I’m proud of having been able to fight."[6]
Chiron
Sieg's ally and mentor figure. Along with Astolfo, Chiron was one of the first Servant's Sieg would meet after escaping his prana tank. In contrast to Astolfo's overly affectionate coddling towards Sieg, Chiron is very direct and frank about his situation though ultimately well-meaning and kind. He is endeared by the boy's innocence and expresses his desire for Sieg to be able to pick and choose a way to live that would be able to leave him without any regrets. Sieg respects Chiron and trusts him greatly, following his advice regarding life and instructions on the battlefield without question. As Chiron is someone always eager to teach and Sieg is an individual eager to learn, he often has a mountain of questions ready for the sage at any time.
"Chiron. Things here seem much more peaceful. If it's possible, I would like to learn a great deal from you. ...Wait a minute. It seems like a stack of homework just appeared out of nowhere."[5]
Siegfried
The legendary hero who gave his life to save the dying Sieg. Despite not knowing him personally, not having shared a single word with one another, and not being asked for his help, Siegfried willingly gave up his own life to save Sieg of his own personal desire to follow not what is simply ordered of him but the ideals of justice he failed to live up to in his previous life. Satisfied with finally being able stand up for and do what he believed was right, Siegfried vanishes from the world with no regrets while Sieg is left with overwhelming feelings of both guilt and gratitude, seeing it as his duty to somehow live in a manner that pays honor to the hero who did not even hesitate to sacrifice his life to save a mere homunculus. It is because of this that the then nameless homunculus calls himself 'Sieg' in honor of his hero as he desired to carry at least half the man's name so as to never allow himself to forget what Siegfried had done for him.
"I never had the opportunity to have a full conversation with you. But the fact that I am here at all is thanks to you. Thank you, Siegfried. There is nothing else to say."[5]
Kriemhild
Mordred
Sieg's rival and eventual comrade with whom he gets along with relative difficulty. Initially Mordred displays visual frustration towards the very existence of the Yggdimmillenia homunculi as they seemed to be nothing but mindless, emotionless tools, a notion she herself resents being a homunculus herself. It wasn't until meeting Sieg who displayed a strong sense of self much like herself in protecting Astolfo she would see otherwise. Initially she planned to simply leave him be but after he miraculously managed to stab her with Astolfo's sword while her guard was down she makes up her mind to see him as an opponent worth cutting down and does just that, only afterwards showing respect towards him for his resolve and promises to remember his name. When Sieg comes back and does battle with her again as Siegfried, she initially mocks him as a counterfeit Servant but all the same does battle with him once more, only truly becoming enraged after seeing he somehow survived the clash of their Noble Phantasms vowing that she, and she alone, would be the one to have the privilege of killing him. Ironically, she would end up saving him from a deranged Celenike later on, seeming to have come to develop a strange sympathy for a fellow homunculi with a will of his own. They would even team up and work together against the golem Adam later on under Chiron's direction. When they meet again in town, Sieg treated her to lunch so that he could ask for her opinions on humanity. Seeing that Sieg has no grudge towards her for killing him, she decides to forgive him for surviving her Noble Phantasm, which makes them even in her eyes. Ruffling his hair and smiling cheerfully, Mordred leaves behind one last promise to meet again on the Hanging Gardens, as well as an exorbitantly high bill for all the food she ordered.
"Mordred. I'm glad to see you well. Did you find what you were looking for? ...I see. Let me just go and greet your father... Why are you so mad?"[5]
Frankenstein's Monster
Though they had not interacted with one another, Sieg having witnessed her being impaled by Mordred was moved to attack the knight and as a result was killed by Mordred. In an attempt to take down Mordred, Frankenstein would utilize her suicidal Noble Phantasm. Following her demise, her life and will would transfer to Sieg, rescucitating the boy, and granting him use of Galvanism. With it, Sieg became able to use Balmung without immediately expending his Magical Energy and losing Siegfried's form, able to survive and quickly heal from being shot in the heart multiple times at point-blank range by Reika whilst still moving with enough speed and precision to catch and destroy her shots with magecraft, and slow down the deadly effects of his complete consumption of the Dead Count Command Spells temporarily. Her abilities would only fully manifest within Sieg after his rage towards Amakusa Shirou for Jeanne's death reawakens her soul and grants him conscious use of her powers, including a significantly weakened version of Blasted Tree in the final battle.
Jack The Ripper
Initially Sieg had nothing but hatred within his heart for Jack the Ripper after her attack on Yggdimillenia injured and took the life of his siblings, which provoked him to pursue her with no regard for his own safety. After he had seen her horrific past, Sieg's burning feelings of hatred dissipated and were replaced by confusion and distrust towards humanity as well as a deep sorrow for Jack due to his regret that he was not able to save her.
Avicebron
"Avicebron... the choices you once made should probably be never forgiven. But your cry for peace... seems sincere. So, I'm happy to fight by your side."[5]
Amakusa Shirou Tokisada
"He was once someone I fought against. But now that he is our ally, I shouldn't be carrying any grudges against him. Still, I am... conflicted... And I'm sure Amakusa Shirou feels the same."[5]
Sitonai
"Summarizing you’re a homunculus, Sitonai, Freyja, and Louhi. I see, how complicated. …Me too in general? I’m a homunculus, temporarily borrow Siegfried’s power, can transform into Fafnir, and I’m a fragment of a former Master? …How complicated…"[6]

Fate/Apocrypha[]

Sieg in a tube

Sieg inside the tube.

Sieg, originally just an unnamed homunculus, first begins to gain sentience around the time the Black Faction has summoned all of its Servants. Originally, he is conscious without the ability to form thoughts, only a weak "instinct" reacting to pain. Without the ability to form thoughts or have recognition of anything, he could not assert himself or truly be called "alive." However, he still possessed the senses of his body, and over time he received and processed "information", leading to the acquisition of "knowledge" within him. He becomes conscious, and he is able to realize the simple fact that he is a living creature. The cycle of learning begins to repeat at a great speed, bolstered by his Magic Circuits. He recognizes many beings, including humans, homunculi, and Servants. The humans ignore him, the homunculi, his comrades, view him with faint emotions, and the Servants, monsters, display a wide variety of expressions.[7]

There is no great change in his situation with the acquisition of knowledge, but he slowly begins to organize it within himself and begins to feel strange with the more information he obtains. He does not yet realize it to be fear, the desire to turn away from that which is in front of him, and he cannot even understand the emotion being one of cowardice because he has yet to understand the idea of courage. After the scouting of Kairi Sisigou and Saber of Red leads to battle with several of Caster's golems, Caster and Roche Frain Yggdmillennia appear before Sieg, discussing the process of inserting Magic Circuits into the golems. Identifying them by their "codes", names, Sieg is able to recognize that they have appeared before him numerous times, and using his information, he is able to determine the insertion of Magic Circuits equates to the destruction of that which is consumed to supply them. Having not previously understood death, he becomes scared upon drawing the conclusion that destruction equals death.[7]

As he is selected along with two others for Caster's usage, the conscious part of him that had been scared notes that he will soon die. Though he initially believes that there is no recourse, he decides to act due to being able to do what the other homunculi cannot, obtain information, think, and fear the conclusion. With the coincidence of obtaining an identity along with the coincidence of being chosen to die, his fate begins to move as he moves his arm for the first time in his life. Affirming his situation as he attempts to move, he makes both his hands move to beat against the reinforced glass. Realizing the futility in trying to break it physically, he scans his Magic Circuits to work a spell that weakens the glass enough for him to escape, breaking it and allowing him into the world from which he had been isolated. Injured from the glass, he removes his breathing apparatus and takes his first breath.[7]

He quickly reminds himself that escape from the glass was only his initial goal, quickly seeking to escape. The ability to stand was not imbedded into his functions, so he can only fall and feebly craw along the floor. Slowly managing to stand, he is filled with great pain as he begins his first steps. He does not know his path, only knowing that he will die if he stays, and he can only walk forward with great trepidation of further pain as he ignores the "whispers" of the homunculi behind him. With skin as soft as that of a newborn, simply walking is enough to bloody his feet as he searches for a destination. Thinking himself to be a meaningless existence as his weak body struggles along, he can only believe that he will die without meaning in the same way he was born without meaning.[7]

He pauses in confusion as he realizes Rider of Black has come before him, unable to move out of fear. Soothed by Rider's concern, he recognizes Rider and unconsciously mutters for Rider to help him before fainting. Before fading out, he only wishes that he will continue to be alive. Rider decides to help him, bringing him Archer of Black's room to hide him from Caster's pursuit. Archer realizes the situation, letting them in and preparing to look him over due to his expertise on medicine. He states that Sieg overused his circuits and tore through his veins in destroying the glass and further collapsed from exhaustion. He tells Rider of Sieg's physical condition and short lifespan, and Rider affirms that he will keep helping him until the end, as he would not be able to survive on his own.[7]

Sieg awakens during their conversation, so he gets up at Rider's prodding. Extremely nervous, he is unable to understand Rider's meaning as he asks about helping to grant Sieg's wish. As he thinks about it, he believes a powerless being with no history has no right to have a wish in the first place, having given up such a right in the first place. Although he believes he does not deserve such a thing or that it will be granted, he asks Rider to save him. He is shocked when Rider agrees immediately, but becomes moved enough by Rider's innocence to have no doubt in his words.[7]

He clashes with Saber of Red during a large battle. She calls him a fake Heroic Spirit, and he acknowledges that he cannot match up to a proper Heroic Spirit. In order to save his comrades who were left behind, he decides to utilize his Saber's Noble Phantasm, Balmung, clashing with her Clarent. He does not care about winning or losing, only that it is a necessary action. He who does not have a life in the first place thus cannot be said to be risking his life. Red Saber comes out victorious, but only due to the special properties of the weapons and the distance from which they attacked. It is possible utilizing Balmung even a few steps closer may have changed the outcome. She is infuriated because he still lives, and moves to finish him.

Fate/Grand Order[]

Servant Sieg is more of a terminal than an imitation. Just like the Avenger - Jeanne Alter, he will probably disappear once the anthropic principle starts to move properly and his role come to an end.[1]

Event: Inheritance of Glory[]

Sieg, still in the form of Fafnir, senses an endless Grail War is occurring inside the Greater Grail and that certain changes are being made to it. Realizing someone is trying to use it for themselves and fearing it will go out of control, Sieg uses the Grail's power to summon a mental projection of Ritsuka from the Shadow Border to help him. He initially tries to speak to them in faux Old English, but he soon stops. He then explains the situation, saying he cannot use the Grail himself nor let others use it. The worst-case scenario is that a piece of the world’s Texture will tear off, which will plunge the world into a chaos of fantasy and reality. Ritsuka agrees to help, and Sieg flies them into the Grail.[8]

Upon arriving, Sieg is surprised that Trifas has been recreated with such incredible accuracy. Wiping out a group of golems and Dragon Tooth Warriors with a single breath of his fire, he senses a Servant when he’s struck down by Vasavi Shakti. He crash lands into the forest below; his wings too damaged to fly for now. He explains the Servants are more akin to robots, sharing the same combat prowess, but lacking the emotions and logic of their originals. Furthermore, he ponders how a recreation of the war emulated Noble Phantasms. Ritsuka warns him of an incoming attack, but Fafnir tells them to run to the fortress, since his body is too slow for them to escape together. He is struck by Balmung when Chiron finds him and Ritsuka, recognizing them as a Master. Sieg leaves Ritsuka in Chiron's care, promising Ritsuka that they'll meet up later.[9]

Achilles later brings him to the Millenia Fortress' garden. There he reunites with Ritsuka and confirms it was he was who turned Achilles and Chiron into proper Servants. His original plan was to convert all fourteen reproductions into proper Servants and investigate the mastermind behind the recreated Great Grail War. But considering such a plan inhumane, he hesitated and only converted Chiron and Achilles in a spur-of-moment decision. Then, not wanting to be useless with an immobile body, he creates a terminal for himself in the image of his original self. He then goes with Ritsuka to meet with Chiron and Achilles.[10]

Chiron tells everyone they have no chance of winning with their current numbers. At his suggestion, the group discuss on how to defeat the twelve Servants. Ritsuka suggests defeating at least three Servants. Chiron says he and Achilles can fight nine, while Ritsuka and Sieg take on three.  He then trains the others on how to detect and dodge the Noble Phantasms of the replica Servants by nightfall.[10]

Later that night, the group observe from the fortress wall that the Servants are approaching the fortress. Chiron jumps down from the fortress with Achilles and activates the traps they set up earlier to separate the Servants. Ritsuka and Sieg then engage Avicebron, William Shakespeare, and Jack the Ripper in battle.[10] After they're defeated, the replica Servants disappear when the sun rises. The group then return to the fortress to rest.[11]

Sieg leaves Ritsuka to rest while he checks on his main body. Soon enough, he finds that Jack, Avicebron, and Shakespeare have manifested with a sense of self.  He barges into Ritsuka's room to inform them, but he sees they've already met Jack. After confirming to Jack that he's a friend, he brings Ritsuka to the garden to meet Avicebron and Shakespeare. There he asks the two Casters and Jack if they know why they were summoned. They all answer they do not know. Chiron realizes they can turn the other nine Servants into allies as well. He then gives Ritsuka and Sieg command of Avicebron and Shakespeare, since neither of them are combat oriented. Sieg and Ritsuka both agree they should keep an eye on Shakespeare. Jack asks Sieg if he's avoiding her. At first, Sieg denies that he is, but quickly admits to it. He confesses he saw her past, calling it horrible. Jack asks him why the pasts and memories of others matter to him. Sieg answers it's because he cares and confesses he wanted to save her, but he couldn't. He then changes the conversation to be about food.[11]

That night, Chiron says they'll use the same tactics as last night, except this time he wants Achilles to help Ritsuka and Sieg. He also orders Avicebron to support everyone with his golems, and  Shakespeare to buff whichever party he finds interesting. After Jack agrees not to aid Ritsuka, the group jumps down from the wall to defeat Spartacus, Atalanta, and Frankenstein.[12] After the Servants disappear with the rising sun, Achilles discusses with Sieg on how it's possible for all the replica Servants, even those with divinity, to be able to harm him. Chiron then tells everyone to return to the fortress quickly upon suspecting the absent replica Shakespeare infiltrated the fortress to kill Shakespeare.[13]

Fortunately, the group finds Shakespeare safe and sound. Sieg and Chiron agree that the enemy may become more aggressive now that they’re gaining the advantage. Later, Sieg brings food to a newly rested Ritsuka, having used his powers as the Grail's caretaker to cook the food. Ritsuka tells Sieg about the Shadow Border and the Human Order Revision. Sieg promises Ritsuka that he'll find them home whatever happens.  He expresses embarrassment for the way he spoke when they first met and asks Ritsuka to forget all about it. He then senses someone is attacking his main body and rushes to the garden with Ritsuka to check.[14]

Ritsuka and Sieg see it is Frankenstein attacking Fafnir. Ritsuka realizes she doesn’t want Fafnir in her flower garden, but Sieg says his main body cannot move now. As Frankenstein pushes Fafnir to the other side of the garden, Spartacus arrives ready to fight the dragon, identifying him as an oppressor. Ritsuka tells him Fafnir isn’t an oppressor, so Spartacus sleeps in the garden until an oppressor appears.[14]

Later that night, the group prepares to fight another three Servants. Atalanta starts off by deploying Phoebus Catastrophe, but Astolfo uses Hippogriff to avoid it. While she, Chiron, Achilles go engage the enemy directly, Sieg asks Jack to describe the enemy. Jack gives descriptions for Mordred, Siegfried, and Astolfo. She also reports she saw Shadow Servants and suspects they're leftovers from last time. Sieg decides they will defeat the enemy while protecting the Casters. The group then proceed to defeat Mordred, Siegfried, and Astolfo.[14] After the enemy disappears when the sun rises, Sieg expresses concern that the Grail’s possession ration isn’t changing to their favor. If it remains so, someone other than him will gain control of the Grail. Jack asks why he's risking his life over this. Sieg confesses he stopped a Servant from using the Grail to grant their wish, so he feels a responsibility to ensure the Grail is never misused again.[15]

Meeting in the garden, Sieg confirms Mordred’s suspicions that he is steadily losing control of the Grail. Mordred decides they should hit the enemy directly in the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. While agreeing with a direct assault, Chiron warns their chances of success will be low since twelve Servants will be guarding the Gardens. Avicebron advises against attacking the Gardens during the day like Atalanta proposed, as a flying golem he sent there on Chiron’s order was forcibly transported outside when night arrived. Chiron asks Sieg if he can move his main body now. Sieg answers he can fly at a minimum but warns he’ll fall if hit by a Noble Phantasm, especially Balmung. Achilles, Astolfo, Avicebron, and Shakespeare agree to support and protect him and Ritsuka. Atalanta considers fending off attackers with her arrows until Sieg recalls that she used Agrius Metamorphosis to fly in the original war. Jack decides she’ll direct The Mist against the enemy while riding on Fafnir. Chiron tells Shakespeare and Avicebron to ride on Fafnir as well.[16]

After some training with Avicebron’s golems, Sieg confirms to Siegfried that none of the Servants have memories of the Great Grail War. He explains that their memories are usually engraved in Throne, but their current selves are incomplete. Alternatively, he suspects someone may have sealed away on purpose, possibly the mastermind. Siegfried asks him if he stayed true to himself. Sieg tells him he cannot answer that, so Siegfried leaves it be as he considers his past grudges of no importance now he’s been summoned. He finds it hard to believe that Sieg has become Fafnir, though.[16]

Ritsuka later tells Sieg that Siegfried fought a different Fafnir in Orleans. Sieg isn’t concerned, though, knowing the Dragon Slayer will willingly give his life for whatever he believes is right. But he does guilty that Siegfried saved his life to save him, even though he didn’t regret it. He then explains that after becoming the Grail’s caretaker, he had learned of the battles he wasn’t aware of. He has questioned if he’s done the right thing ever since he obtained the Grail. Ritsuka tells him they’d feel the same, which makes Sieg feel better. Sieg then asks Ritsuka to tell him about the Servants they know. After they do, Ritsuka asks Sieg if he can visit Chaldea. Sieg replies he cannot, as he must stay and take care of the Greater Grail. He is also waiting for someone, and he will not overturn that decision.[16]

The day before the assault, everyone has a picnic in the garden. When Mordred says it's pointless for Servants to learn new things, Sieg refutes her by saying he knew someone who kept learning even after becoming a Servant. As he wasn't there, he cannot say who they were, but he is certain they were a hero who kept moving forward.[17]

Later that night, the group flies towards the Gardens. They eventually break through the replica Servants barring them and enter the Gardens. Inside they defeat Semiramis and Karna, who rematerializes with a sense of will come morning.[17] Semiramis immediately deduces that the current situation was caused by Sieg's negligence. Sieg admits that may be true as he refused to use the Grail. Semiramis, knowing who the true enemy is, then guides the group to the Grail's chamber.[18]

At the Grail’s chamber, the group meets Darnic Prestone Yggdmillennia, the mastermind behind the recreated Great Grail War. Sieg explains who and what Darnic is. He tries to convince him to surrender, saying a broken Grail cannot reach the Root nor activate the Third Magic. Darnic refuses and reminds the group that he already controls 87% of the Grail. He declares that as long as he possesses the Grail, none of them will ever disappear, but they will once he’s gone. He then proposes using the Grail to incarnate them if they agree to join him. But they all refuse his proposal on their own principles as heroes. Expecting that to be their answer, Darnic connects to a replica of the Grail that emerges from within the Grail to Sieg’s shock. He then fights the group by having the replica Grail continually spawn replica Servants.[18] The group struggle at first since the replica Grail is using their class affinities against them, so they decide to do the same.[19]

After the replica Grail is destroyed, Darnic refuses to give up when he’s struck by Kazikli Bey from the supposedly sealed Vlad. Unlike the others though, he retained his memories of the Great Grail War due to Darnic fusing with him during it. He eventually convinces Darnic to accept that his broken dream can never be recovered. After Darnic and Vlad disappeared, Semiramis teleports the group back to the ground.[20]

On the ground, Astolfo asks Sieg why he's been avoiding him. Sieg eventually answers that it's awkward to meet someone you've said already goodbye to, even if they don't remember. Astolfo asks if the "him" Sieg knew was still him. Sieg affirms that he was and states how proud he was to have Astolfo as his Servant. Astolfo thanks Sieg and disappears. Siegfried tells Sieg that he and Fafnir could have resolved their differences peacefully if he had been the evil dragon he faced. If they dd, he wouldn't have bathed in Fafnir's blood and become invulnerable, though he believes he would have died as a nobody otherwise. But Sieg is certain that Siegfried would still be a hero, even if he never bathed in dragon's blood or wielded Balmung. Siegfried thanks Sieg and disappears. After Chiron and Achilles disappear, Sieg and Ritsuka exit the Greater Grail with it now stablized. [20]

Back in the Reverse Side, Sieg gives Ritsuka his terminal to aid them as a sign of thanks and friendship. He confirms he will stay and continue waiting for a certain someone, having complete faith that they will come eventually. He then bids Ritsuka farewell, saying that their time together will always be a precious memory to him. After Ritsuka leaves, Sieg notes that he can no longer track his terminal. His terminal will be summoned as Ritsuka's Servant one day and form his own memories. Sieg then goes to sleep, waiting for the future he knows will come.[20]

Fate/Labyrinth[]

Manaka Sajyou in her dimensional travel saw a solitary and kind dragon (孤高なりし優しき竜, kokō narishi yasashiki ryū?), waiting for another for a very long time in the Reverse Side of the World. Manaka finds the dragon's appearance to be beautiful, but the dragon does not respond to Manaka, as both of them saw the end of the world.

Abilities[]

He possesses first-class Magic Circuits.[3] Sieg is a being whose purpose was to have Magic Circuits as the foundation of his body, so his ability to comprehend information is great. He is able to go from being less aware than a baby to gaining knowledge at an abnormal speed in a span of days. He is made to take in mana from the atmosphere and provide it to Servants, and he is able to manually cut the link upon gaining intelligence. Instinctively knowing magecraft, he is able to use the spell "Logic path(Straße)/open(gehen) (理導/開通(シュトラセ/ゲーエン), Ridō/kaitsū(Shutorase/gēen)?)" to wish for a result of "destruction" on the glass holding him, causing his magical energy to transform it in a way for the least "destruction" required.[7] Able to understand the mineral the glass is constructed from, it becomes as brittle as a weak piece of wood. When Sieg tries to protect himself from Gordes, he uses this technique to defend himself. His palm became the barrel of a gun - the sheath of a sword - and what it fired was a bullet or perhaps blade that would not only destroy Gordes' arm, but mercilessly devour his heart.[21] He is also able to disintegrate bullets Reika Rikudou fires at him.[22]

It is also said that Sieg can use basic magecraft, such as suggestion and healing magic.

Unlike regular homunculi built to be functional, perfect lifeforms, he possesses many physical defects, and while his circuits are first-class, his body is not able to utilize them without failing. Meant only to supply magical energy and not act as a fighter, he is physically weak and will only live three years at most.[7]

Skills[]

Class Skills[]

  • Independent Action (EX Rank): A subspecies of possessed Servant. Mana is required to take action in combat, but regarding anything else, he can live for months and years just like an ordinary human.[6]
  • Homunculus (C+ Rank): A homunculus cast by the Musik family having appropriated the skills of the Einzbern. Though accidental, he was born with a personality and excellent ability in magecraft.[6]

Personal Skills[]

  • Artificial Hero (Fake) (B+ Rank): A man-made pseudo-hero created by receiving the heart of the hero Siegfried and having Frankenstein’s Noble Phantasm electric current flowing inside his body. Though it’s only for a short time, by combining it with a Dragon Revelation Command Spell he can act as a hero ———— a Servant.[6]
  • Magecraft (C Rank): Natural talent that homunculi, cast from Magic Circuits, have. Makes use of a technique style that understands the structure of the target and destroys any solid material by striking with the completely opposite composition. However, Sieg can’t use any magecraft at all besides that.[6]
  • Dead Count Shapeshifter (EX Rank): By using the Command Spells he owns, he makes use of the inserted heart of Siegfried although temporarily, and can transform into Siegfried. A super-unique skill that is impossible to be possessed by others that aren’t the homunculus Sieg.[6]

Noble Phantasms[]

During his final fight with Shirou, after he had consumed his final command spell, an enraged Sieg used Galvanism in tandem with the sword skills he learned during his transformations as Siegfried to fight on somewhat even terms with the heavily injured and one-armed Shirou. He was forced to use a weakened version of Blasted Tree against Shirou as his trump card after his sword was broken and he was impaled through the chest.

Sieg underwent a forced transformation into the dragon Fafnir due to the expenditure of his Dead Count Shapeshifter command spells, which allowed the dragon's blood inside him from Siegfried's heart. He used this Noble Phantasm to carry the Greater Grail to the Reverse Side of the World so that the Third Magic targeted at all of humanity would be negated, due to only phantasmal beasts existing there. As a result of the transformation, he lost his physical form and his final state is that of his soul. As a Chaldean Servant, this ability manifests as a Noble Phantasm named Ákafiloga All-gríð.

Forms and Alternate Versions[]

Saber of Black[]

After gaining Siegfried's heart, Sieg's appearance physically changes and he gains a stronger constitution which leads Astolfo to claim he can live for more than 100 years. He has special black Command Seals which appeared on the back of Sieg's left hand known as Dead Count Shapeshifter: Dragon Revelation Command Spells (竜告令呪(デッドカウント・シェイプシフター), Ryūkoku Reiju(Deddokaunto Sheipushifutā)?) which allows him to take the form of the Heroic Spirit Siegfried for 180 seconds (3 minutes). He can only take form using the Command Spell for a limit of three uses.[25]

Abilities[]

Sieg is able to transform into Siegfried for three minutes thanks to his Dead Count Shapeshifter: Dragon Revelation Command Spells with which he downloads the information of the Heroic Spìrit into his body. Physical information is expressed, battle experience is stored and accumulated, personal abilities are embodied, and even Noble Phantasms are reproduced. In terms of physical abilities, Sieg perfectly reproduces as Siegfried. During his fight with Mordred, she hadn't yet healed all the wounds she sustained in her attempt to flee from Frankenstein's Blasted Tree. Although her B+ Strength should be enough to damage Siegfried, her peerless strike was unable to pierce his harder than steel skin. After the two exchanged a few blows, it was made abundantly clear that Sieg had not only perfectly reproduced Siegfried's physical abilities, but also inherited his abundant accumulated battle experience as well. By Sisigou's rough assessment, he was almost even with her in terms of stats. To make it worse, he was better in terms of defence in a straight up match thanks to his Armor of Fafnir. It was in this situation that Mordred and Sisigou agreed to use a Command Spell for as long as he fought Sieg. Normally, a Command Spell is used in a more narrowly defined way such as, for example, a spatial jump equivalent to Magic. If not used in such precisely defined way, the binding force of the command spell would weaken. The order "defeat Saber of Black" was vague, so the boost only allowed Mordred to raise her power to its max. Nevertheless, being now able to use her full strength, her slashes were able to cut him. In a contest of pure physical strength, Mordred with both her Mana Burst and the boost of the Command Spell was stronger.[26]

In the clash between Balmung, and Mordred's Clarent Blood Arthur, the second one was slightly superior. Between his Noble Phantasm which destroyed the entire surrounding area in a wave, and Mordred's, which destroyed all existing material in it's path in a straight line, Mordred's Noble Phantasm had the advantage due to the energy being more focused. However, when their trump cards clashed, Mordred noted that Sieg wasn't using Siegfried's full power. Although his power was definitely equal to that of Siegfried, Sieg had not yet reached his mind and spirit. As a result, she was able to stay one step above him during their battle. Most likely, his resolve would be even greater when he next transformed and he would be strong to match her. Then, if he transformed a third time...[26]

Using Balmung was enough to deplete his reserves completely, causing him to lose Saber's form even as his magic circuits desperately cling to "remain as Saber." His armor and Noble Phantasm disappear, causing Siegfried to vanish from the world. The process brings extreme pain to his flesh, bones, and nerves, and he loses any ability to move or respond to threats. It is technically possible to transform again within a short period, but his body would not be able to endure the backlash.

However, after being revived by Frankenstein's lightning, a last gasp imbued by her will, a piece of her is reborn inside him. This grants him the "perpetual motion machine" ability of Bridal Chest and allows him to transform and fire Balmung repeatedly. During his battle with Karna and later Shirou, Sieg managed to use Balmung many times consecutively due to the mana replenishment he received from “Galvanism”. In terms of speed of his Noble Phantasm use, Sieg was closer to that of the real form of Siegfried than even the heroic spirit copy. This is because Sieg's increased mana generation, boosted by Galvanism, was able to fill Balmung with mana far faster than Siegfried had been capable of. In terms of speed of his Noble Phantasm use, Sieg was closer to that of the real form of Siegfried than even the heroic spirit copy. Despite this, the living Siegfried was still faster than Sieg due to his inborn disposition combined with the transformation of his heart into a Magic Core, caused by bathing in and drinking a dragon's blood. This allowed him to draw forth magical energy and fire the slash wave even faster than Sieg. Unfortunately, the moment he was summoned as the Servant Saber, that special characteristic of his was highly degraded.[27] Sieg puts his increased mana generation to use during his fight with Karna, issuing two back-to-back attacks on the level of Brahmastra Kundala, which caused Lancer decides that there is only one way to win and uses Vasavi Shakti. Balmung would have been overwhelmed in only two seconds, but Sieg used the power of his last command spell to dramatically boost its strength, allowing it to reach an equal footing with Vasavi Shakti. (albeit very briefly) It becomes a battle of will from this point on, but since Sieg's opponent was Karna, who was famous for his indomitable will, Vasavi Shakti was able to once again begin breaking through Balmung with ease. Before he was killed, however, he was saved by Astolfo with Achilles' shield Akhilleus Kosmos.

Development[]

Creation and Conception[]

Yuuichirou Higashide said that everything started from Sieg. When he was discussing wild ideas with Nasu, Higashide said "his Chest will glitter brightly, three full times!", to which he found it too stupid so he removed it when he was writing the story.[28]

Sieg was designed by Ototsugu Konoe in Fate/Grand Order.

Both a Servant and a Master.

    Level 2 Bond
The Holy Grail War that was held in Romania---
In that Great Holy Grail War, he was one of the homunculi minted for the sake of prana supply.
Originally, his fate was to die after being squeezed out of prana. But, as a result of struggling to survive, he acquired the power of Siegfried and became the eye of the typhoon called Great Holy Grail War.

    Level 3 Bond

    • Independent Action: EX

A subspecies of Possession Servant(2). Although prana is necessary when taking combat actions, outside that he is no different from an ordinary human. Originally, his age should also have been the same as that of a human, but...

    • Homunculus: C+

A homunculus minted from misappropriated Einzbern techniques.
Even if just a coincidence, he was born with individuality and excellent magecraft skills.

    • Artificial Hero (False): B+

A pseudo-hero(2) created by receiving the heart of Siegfried and having the electric current of Frankenstein's Noble Phantasm run through his body.
Although only for a short while, he can perform as a hero - a Servant - by means of a a combination with Dragon Mark Command Spell.

    • Magecraft: C

An inborn talent that a homunculus who was minted from magic circuits has.
He employs a magic formula that can destroy any kind of solid material by understanding the target's structure and clash a complete opposite composition into it.
However, it has no applications other than this.

    • Dragon Mark Command Spell: EX

    Deadcount Shapeshifter.
By employing the Command Spells he possesses, it is possible transform into Siegfried (even if just temporarily) by using the heart of Siegfried that was inserted in him as a catalyst.
The time limit is of roughly three minutes.

    Level 4 Bond
"Scorching Dragon Breath・Melting of the Entire Land"
Rank: EX Type: Anti-Unit Noble Phantasm (self)
Range: 0 Maximum Targets: 1 person
(the breath's range is roughly 50)

    Akafiloga Argrise
A Noble Phantasm that brings about a temporary shapeshift into the dragon kind "Fafnir". By emitting a powerful dragon's breath, massive damage is dealt.
A Noble Phantasm derived from having turned into a dragon and flied in the skies during his lifetime.
It seems that the person himself feels no special difference from when he is a human.

    Level 5 Bond
He has nothing that resembles a past.
It may sound good to call him pure, what laid there is only the resignation of being born and having one's death determined just for the sake of an objective.
His appearance, knowledge and mentality was close to that of an adolescent, but he was (in a sense) a "perfect" existence quite removed from humans.

However, as he went along living, that perfection was lost little by little.

A certain priest loathed that, but he himself desired so and thus abandoned that perfection.
...said antagonism would ultimately bring the Great Holy Grail War to a closure.

    Interlude
Having turned into the evil dragon Fafnir, Sieg carried the Greater Grail to the reverse side of the world in order to prevent the fulfilment of the Third Magic.
He continues to wait in the reverse side of the moon, all while holding on to the hope that she will come to meet him.

Servant Sieg is more of a terminal than an imitation.
Just like the Avenger - Jeanne Alter, he will probably disappear once the anthropic principle starts to move properly and his role come to an end.

    (1) can also be translated as "bearing up with tragedy".

    (2) probably meant Pseudo-Servant

  4. [v] Fate/Apocrypha material - Encyclopedia: Sieg [Person's name], p.168-169 [T]

    Sieg [Person's name]
The protagonist of the light novel “Fate/Apocrypha”. He was originally a homunculus made by Gordes to supply prana, created not to think anything and fated to die after having his prana wrung out by the Servants, but… Almost all details about him were depicted in the novels through the entire course of his life. After all, he has virtually no past to speak of.
Not only that, his life was set to be limited from the beginning as the premise of his birth. Even if he had thought of living a respectable life, he would only have live three years at the most. It’s precisely because of this that he continued to choose absurd, unreasonable and reckless choices for the sake of “what he thought he should do”.
Even after he acquired greater longevity, that aspect of him didn’t change. The reason Sieg acted for the sake of humanity at the end naturally wasn’t for humanity’s sake in and of itself. In the first place, Sieg hadn’t experienced enough to completely believe in humanity.
However, Jeanne d’Arc waged her life to win the future. It is because he saw that and wished to “become her strength” that he acted, a greatly personal desire.
Additionally, his Magic Circuits alone were of such high quality that Avicebron had an eye on him and were in no way inferior to those of Darnic, Yggdmillennia’s head. However, he can only use them to destroy things through Structural Analysis. Even if he had survived, he wouldn’t have had any intention of studying magecraft since he doesn’t have a very positive image of it.
Having transformed into one of the Dragon Kind at the end, Sieg has already lost his physical body. His final state is the form of Sieg’s soul after he transformed by making a wish upon the Holy Grail.
Incidentally, the words Jeanne spoke at the end of the novel made Sieg finally understand the reason why he continued waiting for her all that time. The two of them take being thick-headed to a new extreme!

    Legend
Siegfried has been in battles ever since he was a young man, and he has gained an invincible body from his victory over Fafnir in battle for the treasure of the Nibelungen family. But when he bathed in the dragon's blood, a tree leaf stuck to his back, making it his one weak point. Adding to the growing ranks of the Burgundians, he brought them many victories, and married Kriemhild, sister of the Burgundian king, accessing the throne of Netherlands. But after a trick to marry the Burgundian king to the queen of Iceland, Brünnhilde, he was assassinated by a vassal of the Burgundians who struck him on his weak point. This connects to the revenge tragedy of his wife Kriemhild for the murder of her husband in the later half of the tale.

    Dragon Revelation Command Spells [Others]
Dead Count Shapeshifter. The unique Command Spells engraved on Sieg. They can also be used as normal Command Spells, but there was absolutely no need for Sieg to force Astolfo to do anything with a Command Spell, so he used them all to turn himself into Siegfried. To explain it simply, they basically let Sieg summon Siegfried every time he uses one. The catalyst is Siegfried’s living heart. However, while Siegfried’s body could withstand the dragon blood within it, Sieg’s body can’t. That is reason that the spots on Sieg’s hand where the Command Spells disappeared from turned black. Even after he used them all up, power Sieg obtained from Frankenstein’s “Blasted Tree: Lightning Branch of Crucifixion” managed to barely maintain his human form, but that too was used up when Sieg used this Noble Phantasm at the end.

Phantasmal Greatsword, Felling of the Sky Demon [Noble Phantasm]
Balmung. The Noble Phantasm of Saber of Black, Siegfried. The Nibelungs, a tribe which lived in an underground country, requested that Siegfried fairly and impartially divide up and distribute their treasure, and he accepted the request. Balmung was planned to be given to him as payment for this. However, two kings felt that the allocation of treasure was done unfairly (both kings felt they were being treated unfairly, so it’s highly possible that it was actually divided up fairly without Siegfried favoring either one) and fought Siegfried, but he killed them in return.
The remaining treasure which no longer had an owner became Siegfried’s, and Balmung also became his weapon. He wielded Balmung in every battle after that. It is also said that he won in the battle against Fafnir thanks to Balmung.
It is a sword of twilight that has reached A rank and possesses the quality of both a holy and cursed sword. Perhaps because it was owned by a king, it specializes in fighting against armies, shooting off a semi-circular slash wave. The blue jewel attached to the handle stores True Ether to use as a boost when activating the Noble Phantasm.
Now then, it does have a fast activation rate for a so-called beam weapon, but in a comparison of speed, Siegfried when he was alive was the fastest in activating it, with Sieg being the next fastest and the Servant Siegfried being the slowest out of them.
Sieg possesses the “Galvanism” ability, which the Servant Siegfried does not have, and can draw out the needed prana all at once when activating the Noble Phantasm. The living Siegfried, on the other hand, had his inborn disposition combined with the transformation of his heart due to being bathed in and drinking a dragon’s blood, so he could draw forth prana and fire the slash wave even faster than Sieg. Unfortunately, the moment he was summoned as the Servant Saber, that special characteristic of his was highly degraded.

    Sieg/Siegfield
    Talk about Siegfield
Higashide: This the instant-Servant and homunculus, Sieg-kun. When I think about it, everything started from him. This is bit of a digression, but when we were talking about wild ideas with Nasu-san, I said, “His chest will glitter brightly, three full times!”, but when I was seriously writing the story, I found it too stupid so I removed it.

Konoe: Sieg-kun in his transformed hero form will be in the highlight scene of the final fifth volume as well! Please look forward to it! And each time Siegfried’s armor appears in an illustration, I receive no mercy as my arm dies due to the miraculous number of lines I have to draw. Good heavens!

    ジーク/ジークフリート
    Talk about Siegfield
